Very, very slight Indomitus novel spoilers follow. I'm not going to bother with a tag as I'm being so vague as to not really spoil anything and hey, you DID click on the link to this post even with the spoiler warning in the title.

Okay, at some point in the new Indomitus novel, a strike force of Primaris marines - and ONLY Primaris marines - does indeed take drop pods in a surface attack.

I see this as an encouraging sign - we are three years into the appearance of Primaris marines in the Black Library fiction and this novel in particular was clearly devised with product placement in mind. While that doesn't necessarily mean that an appearance here is a guarantee that those models will be coming, it's pretty close to that. The novel goes out of its way to use as many of the new Indomitus toys as it can and if drop pods were a long way off, I think that part of the story would have been re-written to exclude them. It's not like Black Library is unaware that there hasn't been an official Primaris Drop Pod released to date.

Beyond just being drop pods, there isn't much detail. The pods aren't given a Primaris-type name, nor are any weapons detailed (not even a meager storm bolter - not to say the eventual model couldn't have any, they just aren't mentioned as I said).

Even better, there is a transport variant of the drop pod mentioned which is used to transport an Outrider squad to the surface. I think we all expect that when the Primaris start getting drop pods, there would at least be a variant capable of transporting a Redemptor released around the same time rather than leaving that to Forge World. And after I saw the Hammerfall Bunker, I did wonder if GW might expand the options for the Primaris "Dreadnought Drop Pod" to being able to drop in a Repulsor or something similar. An Outrider squad would be a perfect example of a use for such a transport variant.

That's about it for this bit of "news." Sorry if anyone was expecting more. Like I said, I just see it as an encouraging sign, given that the Indomitus novel is placed as a key part of this edition launch. If Primaris were only planned to ride to the surface in grav tanks or gunships, I don't believe they'd have had them using drop pods here. So coupling this with the release of the Hammerfall Bunker, which gives hints as to the overall aesthetic of the Primaris Drop models, and I think we may see them as early as next year.

It would be quite nice if the Primaris could just take the existing drop pod datasheet, so that they just update the existing drop pod kit. In general, I would like them to be able to take at least some of the classic vehicles, such as Land Raiders.

I remember earlier that they have a restriction on what they're allowed to talk about in their novels based on the game, I think it was Guy Haley talking about Death Company in the Blood Angels.

Yeah, let's just let them take a standard Drop Pod.

(I probably won't get the novel though. I'm not interested in it if it's just Primaris. Nothing against them. Just want to read about my own models you know)

I've been hoping that GW just would allow Primaris in Firstborn drop pods, but I doubt they are going to pass up on making more money...

I think they could still squeeze a decent amount of sales from an old kit for what is basically free money by giving all the new Primaris players and FotM players (if pods become good again) a reason to buy them. There are a lot of people who never had Drop Pods for their Firstborn or never played a pod spam netlist so they don't own any. The only reason I even have two of them still in the box is because they were close to mandatory for Sternguard in 5E.

You aren't missing much, it's effectively a black comedy about Primaris Boreale vs Necron Boreale.

The Vanguard where inserted by drop pod in the lore of the Shadowspear booklet. I remember being convinced that the next codex after that would allow Primaris to use them. It didn’t :(

Hopefully one day. A Redemptor/Outrider one sounds cools though.
