So, playing on the undead horde look of my new necrons, I'm planning a swamp theme. I'm doing them in the Sautekh dynasty colors, but want to wash them in a way so they look grimy and swamp water soaked. I was thinking camoshade for the wash. I was also hoping for advice on creating water puddles on bases. I plan to have them sunk into Stirland Battlemire, and to make room for pools of water. I was thinking contrast medium and a wash would create a swamp water that I could pool in the mud. What wash would work best do you think?

For puddles, the normal way of doing it is to either paint the surface the colour you want the water to be and then add water effect over the top, or to add colour to water effect and to pour/paint that on.  AK Interactive have a product for modelling puddles, but it's probably the wrong colour (although this video might give you some ideas).

I did find a video on Youtube on making swamps - you could probably borrow the water method from that?

Don't know if that's any help?

++EDIT: For a more stylised approach, Duncan did a video on them

That actually looks perfect. Combining it with swampy plants on the base will give the effect I'm looking for! I've never heard of this company somehow, that's what I get for using Citadel all the time. Thank you! Edited by General Strike

Glad it was helpful! :)

Yeah, there are a fair few companies out there that make great stuff - AK Interactive mostly makes products aimed at (realistic) historical scale modellers, in a similar vein to Tamiya (as you're in the US, there's Woodland Scenics as well for scenery materials).  Vallejo do a very nice range of paints, pigments, and washes, and you've also got Privateer Press and Coat D'Arms excellent paint ranges (actually the same paint, just different colours - the Coat D'Arms fantasy range is the GW range from the 1990's) ...

Hi,

I've made a bunch of those using Green Stuff World's UV Resin. You basically mix it with a few drops of Army Painter Strong Tone, pour it, cure it with a UV torch, and your swamp is done. It has an extremely realistic finish, much better than other products from Vallejo or AK (I've tried them all).
