duz_
Plenty of Raptors in the Ravenspire they might be able to assist Also the Forge might have some talented freehand artist too that could give some advice. A stencil using pencil seems a common method and then painting over it Ps I am no freehand expert I avoid it like the COVID  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/365675-tips-on-painting-freehand-raptors-chapter-symbol/#findComment-5577575 Share on other sites
WAR
Yeah I use decals. I don’t trust my freehand abilities painting the chapter logo. Kierdale
A Mentor Legionnaire here and, having the same icon but a different colour, I would suggest decals. MajorNese
While I occasionally freehand the symbol, I don't really have a fixed list of steps. To break it down roughly: Draw the top borders from front to back in 2 strokes (one for the top of the beak, one for the rest), with the second stroke narrowing to nothing to get the sharp zag at the end. Go down the back of the head, outwards at the end for the zag at the back. Same for the other 3 zags next to it. Then do the beak, ending in its bottom zag. From there, draw a curve down to the bottom front zag, and connect it to the previous zags at the back. Fill the shape, draw the eye, done. If your underlying color is flat (no gradients or something) you can correct any mistakes rather easily, or sharpen/shorten those zags from the outside. That's what freehanding is most of the time - add shapes with shape color, subtract from those shapes in background color. duz_ 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/365675-tips-on-painting-freehand-raptors-chapter-symbol/#findComment-5577685 Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
Would it be possible to create a cardboard or plasticard cutout and then simply colour the inside? Or just use it as guide to etch or draw the borders and then colour the inside. MajorNese
Would it be possible to create a cardboard or plasticard cutout and then simply colour the inside? Or just use it as guide to etch or draw the borders and then colour the inside. I've tried the inverse way, using the old etched brass to mask a logo and paint the outside. The corners were quite awful and needed cleaning up, and it only worked on flat surfaces. Dracos
Wish I could help. I’ve never been able to paint details like that freehand. I bought iconography off off PGTM so I can spray paint the emblem and glue them on. Biggest trick is going to be centering each. MajorNese
Well, my second army was Brotherhood of Nod IG. Freehanding that logo onto guard shoulder pads and as tattoos a few hundred times does give you practice. The key is the whole adding/subtracting thing. Once you see that the first stroke doesn't have to be clean/perfect it makes things easier and quicker. WAR
Also look here https://lightindustries.ca/products/raptor-head-decals https://www.themightybrush.com/shop/ Currently not showing up on his website. I have all 3 and Chapter Customizer is the largest sheet but you have to really trim close to the decal to reduce amount of remaining film on it. I have yet to use my Might Brush decals but i know Luther limited the amoutn of film around the decals. Light Industeries are ok, I felt the sheet was small for the Price and they seemed to give me more problems applying them. But for the price I'd go Chapter Customizer or Mghthy Brush, you may need to contact him to see if he has any available.
