I've ordered a new desk for myself with a bit more room, so I'm aiming to dust off my old painting gear.

Was thinking of painting myself some of my favourite Blood Angels, to dip my toe in.

1st question, what's all this Primaris stuff?

I want to get some plain and boring tactical marines, 5 man squad, but I can't seem to find any?

For colour guides, is the GW painting app still the way to go?

Since my paints getting on a bit, Lahmian Medium should bring them back to life?

Tactical squads just come in boxes of 10 now although you can build 2 5-man squads from the box.

It is worth giving the Primaris line a look as they are basically Marines 2.0. The equivalent of a Tactical squad is the Intercessor squad. Tactical Marines cost 15 points each and Intercessors cost 20 but for those 5 extra points you get 2 wounds, 2 attacks and a significantly better gun. The models also look very nice with better proportions IMHO.

The downside is that most Primaris stuff is generic at the moment. All our specialised units like Sanguinary Guard are still "classic" Marines. In the fluff, existing Marines can be upgraded to Primaris and we now have our first Primaris character in the shape of Mephiston.

The difference between the old and new Mephiston gives you an impression of the difference between classic and Primaris Marines in general.

If you are starting more or less from scratch, I would be tempted to suggest basing your army around Primaris units mainly and using older units to add a proper Blood Angels feel such as Sanguinary Guard and Jump Pack Death Company. Games workshop keep insisting that they are not planning to phase out classic Marines any time soon but most Primaris units tend to be a bit better for their points than classic ones (with a few exceptions). I have been playing Blood Angels since 1st edition but my Primaris contingent is slowly growing and I am increasingly using my old minis for more specialised roles (such as jump pack melee units) while Primaris stuff takes over the all-round duties.

May I invite you to the Blood Angels sub-forum? We are a friendly bunch and always keen welcome new blood.

Primaris are the "new and improved" Marines - literally bigger and better (sculpts).  Their equivalent of a Tactical Squad is the Intercessors.  The old 5-man squad boxes (for both Tactical marines and Intercessors) are long discontinued - it's 10-man boxes all the way.  The other option is to get an issue of Warhammer 40,000 Conquest that has Intercessors on the front of it for £8 (UK only).

For painting them, I'd have a look at Duncan's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf7w5Y9Cf6c

If your paints are a bit gloopy, Lahmian Medium and/or water should do it (don't use too much water, as it may alter the consistency/properties of the paint)

I'm thinking of picking up the "easy to build" Primaris Intercessors 3 man box. Seems a little less daunting then having a go at a 10 man squad.

They're on "last chance to buy" at the moment, and may be no longer available (depending on your region).

If you look on eBay, you can pick up the 5-man Intercessors squads from Dark Imperium quite reasonably. They have the advantage of a being a legal squad (unlike the 3-man easy to build squad).
