I decided I like the Phobos units which as a Deathwatch player have been denied to me, so I have started a Raven Guard Chapter under the working name Crimson Ravens to provide Vanguard support. This might change as the colour I am using is a brown/red shade so I will see how crimson it turns out.

Currently for the chapter I have:

*Raven Guard successor.

*Preference for stealth operations means they use a higher number of Phobos units.

*Ultima Founding chapter, so because they are all Cawl-brand Primaris and not transformed RG they have normal skin colours due to Cawl fixing the geneseed.

Only got five Infiltrators built so far and wondering if I should make it a unit of ten or use the remaining ones to build 5 Incursors for Combat Patrol.

To be honest, I'd build the 5 as Incursors. The face masks look horrible to me, so using the Infiltrators helmet may make sense. Ingame, forward deployment and placing mines is a useful option.

Also, the Start Collecting Vanguard (or even the full Shadowspear half) will easily get you many useful units, including another 10 Infiltrators, so chances are that you will end up with enough of those. Eliminators and Phobos Lieutenant (from said SC box) are some of the most-used units for RG, so that box would be the logical next step.

Personally, I already had 10 infiltrators with their daft bald heads begging for sniper fire so I build a box of their separate release as incursors but used the helmeted version because get bent GW and your constant desire to have bare heads in a warzone (...especially when they go to the effort of covering everything else in tank armour!).

To me Infiltrators are fairly costly for their main gimmick of Deep Strike denial which may not be so valuable in smaller games due to not having as many chances for it. Incursors however may be more valuable thanks to their overall better range of combat ability and also Haywire Mines in the smaller games may be useful along with objectives being so important, would add a nice element of mind games (opponents may be reluctant to move close to the mine even if it isn't the highest damage thing).

Infiltrators really only have the comms specialist over incursors imo, always being in captain/lieutenant range can be quite powerful. Besides, they have fun bits such as "Imma Hyuck this knife at that and not use my gun" and "Why do I have to always carry the mine?"

Just recently entered the Spire myself with an all Primaris Raven Guard force. I'm a big customizer though, so all my guys either have beakies or an otherwise customized bird themed helmet on. I can't paint faces worth a :censored: so no bare heads on my guys.

I've found the Phobos Captain to be very effective. I'm mixed in infiltrators, their area denial stuff isn't very useful in small games in my limited experience. Eliminators do some good work though. And while they are not a phobos unit, Aggressors are a ton of fun.

OK now the weather is a bit cooler I have been able to basecoat and wash a test model and put it on my Instagram (which I normally use for WoW).

He is still a bit shiny as he has just had the Agrax treatment.

Dark red armour indicates the mourning of the Istvaan dropsite massacre. The blood may be dry but they have not been forgotten. It is Gal Vorbak Red which it turns out hates black undercoat even though its a base paint. Was hard to get coverage with it.

White chest and weapon Eagle is a nod towards the Raven Guard. As is the single pauldron trim with the company colour (teal for company 4).

Usual red helmet for the sarge.

Standard black and silver gun.

Rubber undersuit is Dark Reaper.

Picture is a little blurry, but overall looks good to me. The face and hair especially. I really suck at painting faces and hair so always go with a helmet on. I like the darker red for the armor and your explanation for it. The teal works well as its a complentary color. And the gold looks nice on the belt and charms/relics. I'm not sure how I feel abou the more standard red helmet, though. I just feel like it either needs to be closer in tone to the armor, or a higher contrast. Thats a purely personal preference though. Looking forward to seeing more of the army.

Thanks. The helmet was a concern as its two different shades of red. I just did it for Codex compliance.

Also it looks a bit purplish after drybrushing (Word Bearers Red then a top highlight of Evil Sun Red). I am going to try Carroburg Crimson on the armour instead of Agrax Earthshade to see if I can make the red a bit stronger.

Nice, neat paintwork. I think mixing 4th company and red armour, especially a bright red sergeant helmet, is always a bit risky - you might end up with Christmas marines. I do like the dark red conceptually as it's quite distinct from the other red armies (Blood Angels etc.) and you don't have the black to make them look like Flesh Tearers. I think the sergeant helm is distinct enough from the regular red that it stands out, personally.

I would maybe try a non-codex compliant company indicator - I find the codex ones a bit poorly thought-out, especially for chapter colours that clash or duplicate those tones. You could use a series of different coloured transfers or maybe a freehand icon like the White Scars use. You could also lean into "teal" more over green but either way I think you'll face some clashing. Red is a tough colour to pair with, black is already taken, white isn't super stealthy.

Highlights on the red would also help it look more red/less purplish etc. - you could pick a light red instead of going into orange. We tend to recognize a colour by the midtone, so if the base is dark red/purplish and the highlight is a muted but strong red, the midtone will still be a nice darkish red.

...I just did it for Codex compliance.

Welcome to the Spire! Paint how you want, and don't hold yourself to 'Codex Compliant' unless that's something that you want to do. The best part about this hobby is we have this whole galaxy/universe to play in. GW has shown us only a fraction of what could potentially be out there.

Hell, I'm running a Primaris Raven Guard 'successor' army but their lore places them squarely in 'renegade' status. I've got a custom scheme, iconography, and they like writing all over their armor in definitely-not-heretical-script that they've devised themselves. No company markings, just battlefield role markings, and even those are not reflective of the Codex.
