I’ve been out of the 40K loop since I don’t live near a place where people regularly play the game and have been collecting/ playing stuff like Blood Bowl, Necromunda, and 30k for a few years now. I went to a 40k tournament soon after 8th was released and wasn’t particularly into the rules, so have been on hiatus --- looking to bite the bullet and get back into it with 9th. I was hoping that I might get some advice or possibly links to some resources because I’m having a hard time finding where to start. Since I have storyline under control with 30k, I’m looking to build a relatively competitive 40k space marine army, possibly Blood Angels though I also like Ultras (I played Space Wolves back in 7th and want something new). I realize that this is a very broad request, but I’ll be honest and say that I’m a bit overwhelmed with how much has changed since 7th (which we still use more or less for Heresy) and so I don’t even know how to equip the Primaris marines I have on my modeling table!

  1. Are there any resources that might show me what a competitive list looks like in principle and how a competitive 40k game (late 8th edition/ early 9th) plays turn to turn? I ask b/c 8th edition concepts like ‘bubble wrap’ aren’t clear to me in practice (I realize that it means surround valuable units with lots of disposable guys and try to clog the whole table with models, but I can’t visualize how one would play this kind of army turn to turn). I don’t only mean ‘bubble wrap,’ but other late 8th/ early 9th ruleset-specific tactics
  2. I’ve looked at some of the first tournament-winning lists from the 9th ed meta available on Spikeybits.com. I don’t necessarily want to directly imitate those lists and would rather have a sense of how the edition works on its own while still using some of the units I like the most (relic dreadnoughts and tanks from FW & terminators, though I have nothing against Primaris marines and have been collecting them).
  3. I’m trying to get a sense of whether I need to do something like bring a detachment of IG in order to farm CPs or add a knight for added firepower, or whether I can make an effective list with only Blood Angels or Ultramarines.

Again, hope this isn’t too broad --- I’m just looking for some tips and pointers on how to get back into the game in 9th after having skipped basically all of 8th.

Thanks.

Well we aren't too sure atm how 9th is going to work.  Not enough games have been played in a competitive environment.  Watching some batreps of competitive games couldnt hurt though.  It SEEMS to be that 9th is all about getting to objectives QUICKLY and staying on them.  So whatever you play it should be fast and/or tough.  For your marines(BA or UMs), impulsors, razorbacks, intercessors, and sang guard/DC are a good starting point.

Somethings to note about 8th/9th ... the meta shifts fairly often compared to previous editions due to the high volume of codex/model releases.  I wouldn't expect year after year after year of static boring metas.  8th had some stagnation with knights dominating for over a year but GW did bring that to an abrupt and brutal end last fall.   I would expect 9th to be similar.  Atm Space Marines are doing the business but it would not surprise me if the upcoming necrons codex had a lot of punch.  The only thing that would truly shock me would be if Chaos Space Marines got a spicy new codex that was mono codex viable at the highest levels.

If you dont mind paying for content The Art of War podcast is excellent.  https://www.theartofwar40k.com

Yup seconding Goonhammer as a great source, d4chan tactics pages too with a huge pinch of salt. The great thing with Primaris at least is you cant go too far wrong due to limited loadouts :D

A lot of the "tactics" from 8th have been curbstomped by GW so im not sure how things will shake out just yet in 9th, there havent really been a wide (if any) variety of tournaments yet due to Covid and it being so new.

You should also look into TTS (tabletop simulator) if you don't live near other players

It has gained a ton of players during quarantine

Here is a sample tournament game with space wolves on TTS from earlier today
