The conversions are well done. I hope to see the models completed and painted soon.

Thanks again, Bjorn! Paint will come after I finish the rhino and a couple more key characters :)

Loving what you've got going so far, man.

Gotta ask though, where'd those severed heads come from in the last pic?

Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. The heads are from an OOP Forge World Death Guard Terminator shoulder pad. The one with the massive spike protruding out of it if that helps. It had a smaller skull grouped with the other two, but I cropped it off as I wanted the two bigger heads representing lopped Astartes heads.

There is some jaw-droppingly beautiful conversion work going on in this thread. Fantastic choice and use of parts.

I love how unique you've made the stormtroopers, the new helmets are a lovely touch. Have you scratch built the new magazines and barrels on their rifles?

Thanks, Ironwrought. The stormtroopers were fun to build. I actually mocked a few up years ago for a Heresy project. Back then, they had their lasguns intact, and all the helmet-hats were unconverted. The result still looked pretty stock. Transitioning them into Inquisitorial Stormtroopers, I wanted them to pop a little more. The helmets of the Scions lend themselves to that specialist look pretty well, so I changed gears from the WWI helmet-hat look with no mask to incorporating the Scion mask. I think the results evoke a witch-hunter-esque vibe. I’ve kept some maskless for flavour. I’m glad you enjoyed the look. The second thing was the lasguns. Keeping them unconverted, their look was just way too identifiable with the long cables going to their backpacks. The way the hands are sculpted onto the lasguns presented an interesting challenge. I found I had to keep a lot of the gun intact to keep the detail of the hands. I had some FW Phobos Bolters kicking around, and, as I’m moving completely away from firstborn stuff, had no real use for the bits. There’s also something ingrained inside of me having been raised on 80’s action movies that loves automatic gunfire... The lack of an ejector port for shell casings bugs me, but I think I can work an explanation for the guns using caseless slugs, or some other esoteric tech.

So, short answer, Forge World Phobos Bolters!

I think my favourite model so far is Trina Von Fey, closely followed by the Ogryns. The huge bull type centaur is really nice as well, I think you've got some great stuff going on here.

Thanks, Doghouse! I’m glad you liked the Ogryns. They were fun. Looking forward to the Necromunda Ogryn Kit to add a couple more with a different, more specialized role.

These all look amazing. I love the lady laying across the dais of the throne.

Thank you for the kind comment, acrowsperch :)

Man, your conversion skills are out of this world. Looking forward for more!

More is on the way (very) shortly!

Naysker: Emperor help us, Seesus. You can’t be serious. von Flaskk is of the Imperial Knights. His fealty to his Chivalry will always come first…

Waides: Come now, Weylann. His House has forsworn their oaths. They are Freeblades of the truest sense. Von Flaskk first and foremost. His Sacristans bribed him into executing his pure-blooded heirs in exchange for them keeping his few Knights marching. They even rescinded the von Flaskk banners, instead hanging those of the von Fey Sacristans. I think you’ll find his loyalty to his knightly crest quite vacant of sincerity at this point, dear friend.

Naysker: And you intend to replace that crest with our Rosette. I don’t know, Seesus. Even as an Acolyte, he would hold an incredible degree of power.

Waides: Yes. Power the Inquisition could use— our Cabal could use. The Great Rift has changed us, Weylann. We need him.

Naysker: And you believe he needs us?

Waides: Only the Seculos Attendus can offer him the vengeance he seeks on the Ecclesiarchy. He will join us.

‘The Knife’
owWNzg.jpg

I first encountered what I’ve come to call simply as the Knife on Danteon. Our Dragon’s Head siege formation had broken through the enemy’s Keep. The men had their spoils. And they had their fun. Poor Eoctish— foolish to the end, had found the daemon-infected weapon. He did not endure. As the bound traitor was brought before me, I clutched the Knife. In front of the heads of my Household, I executed Eoctish. But the fowl blade imbued unexpected sorcery: the head of Eoctish refused to die. It remains at my side, along with the Knife.

I
nquisitor von Flaskk has been known to carry close quarters weaponry with built-in power fields, along with potent plasma-powered types at range. The Inquisitor typically wears greaves and breast plate of custom design, powered by an ancient Kyropatris Field Generator. While these atmospheric impedance barrier devices are generally tied to the Secutarii of the Adeptus Mechanicus, speculation links the modification of this particular unit to the matriarchal von Fey Sacristans.

At his hip, one usually observes two pieces of war gear: a simple stub revolver and a power sword. The former is of standard design while the latter appears to be Astartes-issue. The Radical Inquisitor also carries two esoteric weapons of peculiar origin. A rusted knife, resembling those often found sunk into butchers’ cutting boards, and a concealed beam weapon amidst the buckle of his waist. The knife appears to be mostly ornamental, rarely seeing combat use. Its edge has been credited in the decapitation of those found wanting in his Knight Household, along with —most recently— the execution of the former Chapter Master of the Knights of Riscus, Riscus IV, Excommunicate Traitoris. The beam weapon is rumoured to have a similarly infamous reputation having bisected unsuspecting members of the Xenos envoy representing the grotesque Aghsivs of the Ghoul Stars.

Honerable Lord von Flaskk, your request has been made complete by the Machine-Hands of thy Omnissiah’s gifted adepts of Forge Rygaard. Though the request was an exercise which further strengthened our disregard of nostalgia, your cyber-mastiff’s ocular implant has been weaponized and installed in your war-plate. In contrast to the heretical, so-called digi-weapons of the Jokaero xenos filth, popular among your Order, this subdued augment is capable of repeated use. The beam of the weapon will even shine through the powered armor of the Astartes, as per your request.

A little commentary on the Inquisitor now that he’s finally done. The base of this guy was assembled a quite a while ago. Back before Primaris, when I was trying to truescale marines with waist spacers and plasticard added around the thigh. I came back to the half-built model after my original take looked more than a little stumpy when put next to other conversions for this project (Greyfax stands tall). Here’s a look at what he looked like with my first try:

JEbKdH.jpg

Aside from being a shrimp, he really wasn’t evoking what I wanted with the character. So scrapped he was! I tried to follow Apologist’s example of these special kitbashes for Inquisitors really pushing the envelope of being seamless, almost figures you’d be able to buy from GW. All I really knew for sure going into this Re-bash was he was using Eidolon’s head. After letting it stew as to just what a straight-shooting, Ordos Astartes, Freeblade-Knight-Turned-Inquisitor who executes Space Marines for a living would look like on foot, I decided my old truescale base— which the combi-plasma weapon was really the focal point of, would be a good starting point.

With the base of the kitbash being a Space Marine, I ran quite a big risk of him ending up looking like too much like a Space Marine. I opted for Tempestus Scion shoulder pads— getting rid of the icon pads was a good first step. The second was the Space Marine power plant back pack. A couple loud nods to the Inquisition later (rosette necklace, fire plume), and I’m happy it. I feel like I’ve blurred the lines.

A few bits and pieces more and he was coming together. As von Flaskk is a Radical, I knew I wanted a daemon weapon to really put the exclamation on that, and as you can see from the original attempt, that Festus Knife, along with the head, was the other carry-over. I decided to put the knife on the backpack with the severed heads. I feel like it tells its own story, and doesn’t distract or add any clutter to the front of the model, which is all business with a ton of panache sprinkled on top with how he’s holding his weaponry.

Anyway, a little commentary from me on the model. He was fun, I hope you enjoy him. Feedback is always appreciated

Seesus Christ (couldn't resist, sorry). Mind-blowing conversion on top of a really cool presentation. Hat's off. I also find the first iteration of your inquisitor seamless! The pose is a bit more "heroic" than his current version, but maybe that doesn't fit the character at all. What I do miss from the current version is a bit more naturalness in the pose, but that is just me nitpicking. I think the main "issue" is the mechanical arm: maybe if it was stretched it would look less forced? Having both arms flexed while standing idle... Unless you have something else planned for it, of course. Again, this is just me being too nitpicky. The model just oozes with character and it boasts a lovely and well-thought design. I also find the fluff amazing, so cool...

Thanks Master Umbra for the feedback :) That was one thing that came together really well with the current version I first posted: naturalness— and I’m glad that came across for you. It was a gamble using the space marine sternguard hand-resting-on-sword arm because it evokes more space marine which is something I was trying to avoid, but it won out over a couple other options (powerfist, pointing hand). As far as the other version with the mechanical arm, that version has been disassembled and its back in the bitz box.

Anyway, loved reading your feedback. More to come shortly, including not one but two female entries that will illustrate why I’ve had to increase the height on von Flaskk.

[redacted]Lord Inquisitor [redacted], Seesus is dead. As per his Inquisitorial Mandate, Lord Enved von Flaskk, Half King of the von Fey Freeblades, and Acolyte Primus of Inquisitor Waides is to inherit his Rosette, Retinue, and Relics. I pledge my support of this Mandate. von Flaskk has proven himself to our Cabal, and continues to undermine the influence of the Ecclesiarchy. I believe him right to have Excommunicated the Knights of Riscus. His House fought alongside the chapter in the Gatton Crusade. There was no end to their piety of the church. Their master, prideful Riscus IV, sycophant of the Cardinals, treaded far too close to the Excess of The Dark Prince— a quality we believe shared with the Order of The Risen Wives. von Flaskk now heads to the Ostium Exilis Subsector, to the Adlan System, home of the Omega Hounds, another Space Marine chapter with strong ties to the Ecclesiarchy.

Some commentary on the new ladies:

For Kattrina, as I had already bashed her parents together, I knew I had the benefit of being able to take design cues from both models and try to evoke her lineage to their parents. Using the Necromunda Bounty Huntress felt like a good place to start. She’s got that too cool for school pose, mimicking her pops’. There’s also the tiny bit of chain mail hanging off her belt, which parallels von Flaskk. With those cues to her dad established, I wanted to draw some to her mother, which the stock model did a bit, being half-machine already. Some Sisters of Battle shoulder pads really helped, I feel. Another big one was the corset. The stock head also hit those beats.

For Tyria, I already had her built before I put together the final version of von Flask. The Greyfax model is huge compared to Firstborn marines and Scions, which prompted me to rebuild von Flaskk once I stood Tyria next to him. I used a vampire head that helped establish familiarity to her mother. From there, I modified the stock model a little. The Inquisitor armor that came stock was what I was looking for, so I worked with it. I wanted her to look like a young Inquisitor full of curiosity that had yet to really cut her teeth, and I hope her limited wargear and posing evokes that for you guys.

Oh, and here’s a family shot:

And what a family it is!

Regarding von Flassk: Wait, a Freeblade who also happens to be an Inquisitor and runs around wielding a combi-plas? Quite a character, I'd say ;)

The model is completely fantastic, though! The biggest surprise is how you have indeed managed to not make him read as an Astartes at all, in spite of using so many Space Marine parts. The pose is brilliant, the armour very much looks like something an Inquisitor would wear, and I still love the idea of using Eidolon's head for an Inquisitor. 'The Knife' also gave me a good chuckle, because my literal first thought when I saw that backpack was "ah, daemon weapon" -- just for the record, though: He would be an unbeatable, unholy monster in games of INQ28 ;)

The von Fey ladies are just fantastic, too! I really love the care and attention to detail that is evident in each of your conversions. Oh, and that vampire head you've used for Tyria is a wonderful bit, isn't it?

Anyway, brilliant work all around! Really looking forward to your next update!

Oh, come now! He’s just a shamed knight who found new friends with the Inquisition. Equal opportunity recruitment! Hahaha :)

In all seriousness, I appreciate the feedback, KS. Your approval of de-space-marine’ing the guy makes me one happy converter, good sir. As far as actual games of INQ28, I should have clarified that I don’t intend to game with these. I suppose they are more along the lines of the blanchitsu stuff.

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement! I just want to finish off the rhino and then it’s paint for this lot.

  • 4 weeks later...

von Flaskk looks excellent. As, of course, do the other contributions - and you are quite right about the desirability of bringing otherwise disparate parts together to make something special ... something that looks almost as if it were already a finished GW design.

I get what you mean with some of the design considerations that have gone into von  Flaskk. All the Astartes we do these days are truescaled (either the old fashioned cataphractii/tartaros legs and work up from there approach, or the newfangled Primaris/Mk.X based style) ... and that means that we tend to have an awful lot of legs and torsos from regular-scale marine kits that are simply unusable for Marines. We've tried a few different approaches on turning these into human-sized heavily armoured bodyparts - although as applies the legs, the rather odd and unnatural posings always seem to get in the way of a really well-executed miniature.

So, going with the standing straight upright pair from the Master of Relics was a great call. As was what looks like a bit of a further height advantage via .. is that an Iron Hands torso of some description on there? Plus the Eidolon head. And waht appears to be some further spacing between knee and shin. It all helps to contribute to a more 'realistic' set of proportions for a human, even in powered armour, albeit scaled up somewhat [and thanks to the height of the new Necromunda plastics, this is a bit easier to justify]

There's often a bit of a problem - at least to my somewhat obsessive sense of aesthetics and proportion - with just directly putting Astartes parts on a human-sized miniature : gives one a bit of a 'gorilla arm' effect, or an oversized head. Yet as applies what you've done here, there's nothing of that in evidence. Probably partially because the base-miniature is marine-miniature proportioned in various ways anyway; and also because you've taken the time to swap out the arm holding the combi-plasma for a Scion one [and how well did that come together? did the actual hand and wrist require much alteration to 'harmonize' ? ] - and, of course, because you've put a Scion pad over the sword-arm. [which has also, interestingly, kinda 'shortened' the look of the arm to a more human proportion, further, as well as 'de-Astartes'-izing it somewhat]

And good *grief* you have no idea how many times I've tried (and failed) to find a way to make use of that sternguard sword+arm only to find the proportions didn't work out in various ways for whatever it was I was working on. How close are the belt-attachments to the actual belt - is that partially why the Enforcer stub-pistol is there?

Anyway, fantastic work - not least with the little details like all the cabling, and the thought you've put into various techno-arcana (or even literal arcana) he's carrying with him.

Keep it up.
