Whitelion
the rulebooks are really well done, even the rules are valid, do they have no canon value? Not even minimal? Don't 40k authors recognize them a minimum of validity? Lord_Caerolion
Fanmade publications aren't any more official just because they're pretty. Brother Tyler
The Sepulcher of Heroes rules are a combination of homegrown and official material. Much of the lore is derived from official lore, but it would take considerable research to figure out what is official and what is homegrown. The authors and artists have definitely consolidated material from a vast array of official references, including the Rogue Trader RPG from FFG, the Badab War campaign books from Forge World, and official BFG publications. The homegrown material that is based on official material looks pretty accurate to what I recall. The Black Avenger, for example, was one of the runners up from an official contest in which hobbyists were challenged with creating their own character ships. So it's not truly official, but was given the nod from the BFG team (in fact, the official analysis was that it was slightly more expensive than it needed to be). Meanwhile, the lore behind most of the ships listed for the Badab War appears to be official, but I'll need to consult my collection to see if the rules match anything that was officially published. The Battlefleet Heresy rules are similarly a combination of homegrown and official material. The authors of this publication, too, have researched considerable official material in developing both lore and rules. While any homegrown effort should be approached with caution, especially in terms of lore legitimacy, both of these publications look like they provide a decent starting point for lore. You can disregard anything that is totally made up, but much of it is as accurate as any response you'll get on the Internet (here, for instance). The better questions you might ask would be what references the authors consulted in creating each element of their rules. From that, you can get verification of the lore/rules accuracy through your own research (if you have access to the references) or through consultation with other hobbyists.
