MarshallRigaud
So, as the title says, I have decided to start a new Marine project, and im looking for opinions on the color scheme. Im trying to get away from doing a scheme that has been done, so ive been trying to come up with something different. I want to push myself to learn how to use some new colors and do it properly, so ive picked Red and Yellow as I have a relative difficulty on using both to good effect. Any thoughts on the below scheme, and also, looking to see if this has been done before by a known Successor chapter before I head down the road. Please hit me with any thoughts and or opinions. Cheers! http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smbeta9.php?b62c=@hJ9Lc_i6aJe.haLvy@.@@___iakk7iakk7iakk7@@hHzJli8TzJ@hFTPP@@@@@@@@@._._@@@@@@@@@@iakk7.@@@___hFTPP@iakk7@.@@hLL9Ji8Wpw& Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/366678-new-marine-project-need-color-opinions/ Share on other sites
Xenophon40k
Hi!Yellow helmet and red arnour remind BA instantly (they don't have yellow pauldrons though). And helmets colors (blue and yellow) always were the only flaw in perfect sons of Sanguinius - not the best mix of colors for my taste.I like this red on the picture with the bronze(?) I'd go with bone (yelow or white shade) instead of pure yellow. It's up to you of course =) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/366678-new-marine-project-need-color-opinions/#findComment-5606873 Share on other sites
UtariOnzo
Only issue with the above advice is that, with that kind of red, bone for a yellow stand in will make your marines look like Blood Ravens. Of course, going with strong bold colours could also make them look like an American Football team, so, it’s a tricky one. Just remember that even among canon marines, colours can and do get shared between different unrelated chapters. Even if the scheme looks a bit like another’s, the big identifier always has and always will be the chapter icon, along with ancillary ‘bits’ like specific animal parts, or knightly objects, or a stealthy vibe that firmly root your force in a given concept Xenophon40k 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/366678-new-marine-project-need-color-opinions/#findComment-5606880 Share on other sites
tychobi
The maroon yellow combo seems unique but is not very pleasing in my opinion. Scarlet would pop more. To really compliment yellow and challenge yourself I suggest black or deep blue. Or the maroon would look amazing with white. Commander Nicky
You have to be carefull when blending colors. In colour theory, good army colours schemes are based on two or more constrasting colours. The two main groups are "metal" colours (that being yellow, white, gold, silver and copper) and "non-metal" colours (that being red, blue, black, green and purple). If you prefer a metal colour for your army colour, any non-metal colour can be used for the iconography, especially black. The Blood Angels are unusually in that use non-metal colours; red with black iconography: This is most likely the idea behind it at it gives them an expression of being warm and yet have something dark in them ;) . As the gentemen above says, your colour scheme is very reminding of either the Blood Angels or Blood Ravens.... which makes it tricky if you don't want them to be confused with them. Another consideration is, do you want your entire army to have the same colour scheme or do you want something different for the 1st company or something different for the Primaris vanguard (and Primaris reiver squads 'cause lest face it they belong to that catorary) or another element or your army to stand out or to tell them apart? apologist
I wrote a series of articles on picking your colour scheme (and some other elements of creating your own army) which might be useful. The first one on colour schemes is here: +Death of a Rubricist+ If you don't fancy going off-site or reading a long article, no problem. As others have said above, the scheme looks nice and strong, but is likely to be conflated with some other Chapters. I think that's less to do with colour choice (red and yellow are a strong, eye-catching combo), and more to do with placement on the figure. Typically, Space Marine colour schemes fall into a few different arrangements: solid all-over colour; halved vertically (i.e. different left and right) or quartered; shoulder pads in a different colour to the rest of the armour; and torso in a different colour to limbs and head. Since red is a popular primary colour, I think all the common arrangements have been explored. You might, therefore, try playing around with the placement of the second colour. More unusual options: halved horizontally (i.e. different legs and top half); single limb and pauldron; belt and abdomen only; freehand stripe running length of the torso or other large area. Hope that gives you some ideas, and good luck. Alcyon
I don't know how you feel about choosing an existing canon chapter but there are a ton of underutilized schemes, names and insignia, many with no official geneseed source or much history. This is a good source. For your scheme, my favourite option is the Fire Lords: The Howling Griffons are fairly popular but a great scheme: If you don't like quartering you could run Crimson Guard: and of course if you want a real challenge, there's always the Celebrants... tangoalphatwo
I kinda like the color scheme, it reminds me a little of Valentino Rossi on the Duke a few years ago Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/366678-new-marine-project-need-color-opinions/#findComment-5610089 Share on other sites
Dr. Clock
How would this chapter denote the company? If it's following Codex and you use the shoulder trim, it's gonna look pretty weird with most of the conventional company colours beyond the black you've used here (yay 5th Co!). Of course you can come up with your own method of indicating company... maybe use just the company devices on shoulders in the yellow and red? (see the little circles on the right page here: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/0/04/SMChapterOrgNew.jpg)... like you'd have standard black trim, but yellow/red quartered on the right shoulder for 5th co., or a red vertical stripe on yellow for 2nd. etc.) Otherwise, I'd suggest going for a darker/richer crimson, and maybe extending the yellow all the way down the arms. Good luck with it! Post pics when you've made some decisions plz : ) Cheers, The Good Doctor. N1SB
Brother Rigaud, I'm late to the party, but I was thinking of your scheme in relation to your previous painted miniatures. Like this fellow: That red is AMAZING. THIS is the colour you say you have difficulty with? Dang, I feel embarrassed by my low standards for myself, because I find your red amazing. Now for that scheme (keep the red, I mean, come on, unless this really you more time that it was worth I feel this red is your signature colour), the red and yellow combination is kinda hard to rock as is. I'm with Brother Apologist, those work together well in a very heraldic scheme like the Howling Griffins, something like that is imho an optimal use of that. However, I come with a counter-proposal. I also saw your brass-work, like with your Helbrecht. You do this nice, muted brass that's still warm. So let's take your original concept: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smbeta9.php?b62c=@hJ9Lc_i6aJe.haLvy@.@@___iakk7iakk7iakk7@@hHzJli8TzJ@hFTPP@@@@@@@@@._._@@@@@@@@@@iakk7.@@@___hFTPP@iakk7@.@@hLL9Ji8Wpw& Would you consider swapping the yellow for that light brass you have instead? Kinda like you have for that Aquila. This is just brainstorming. If you already made a decision and are already in production mode, pls ignore this message.
