Hello all!

I've always been a fan of Warhammer 40k but never really the game, only the miniatures and the lore. Over the last few months I've found myself drawn back to the hobby. The new Primaris marines are particularly cool!

After some debate I decided I was going to try get back into the hobby! My favourite part was always converting miniatures so I had to come up with a good theme. Where I ended up was the Tyranid Hunters, loads of potential for some unorthodox non codex mischief. My lore for the group is as follows:

After Marneus Calgars ascension to the rank of Primaris, Cassius was quick to get in line to undergo the treatment to do the same. Who else is best prepared to go up against the hive mind? Once he was ready to receive the necessary treatment to become a Primaris a terrible fate was revealed. Due to his extensive injuries throughout the tyrannical wars and the subsequent bionics to keep him fighting he would be unable to benefit for the enhancements of the Primaris organs and would certainly die upon the surgical table. Cassius was felled low by this news and secluded himself in his chambers meditating on his future. How could he serve the legion best if he was no longer one of the best.

Hearing of the events that transpired Guilliman himself sought out Cassius. Having praised him for his triumphs through the tyrannical wars he offered Cassius new hope. Cybernetic enhancements created by Belisarius Cawl himself, faster and stronger than anything seen before, that will make him more than a match for any Primaris marine. He also asked Cassius to pick 10 of his most trusted Tyrannic war veterans to form a special task force: A new hive fleet has been spotted in the Milky Way that seems to be slowly visiting splinters of older hive fleets and cannibalising them. Where has this fleet come from, what is their purpose and why are the exhibiting this unusual behaviour?

So these marines will be 100% rule of cool. I don't know any of the rules so will be kitting them out based on what lore I think sounds cool. My 5 assault marines and 5 shooter marines arrived today, got some bits in the mail. Here is a little snap shot of what I have planned.

Cool concept, and as somebody whose primary enthusiasms are conversions and lore myself (and therefore , in part , a compulsion to leave no miniature unconverted, especially with the primaris ) , I look forward to seeing what you come up with

Took some photos of the rough bluetacked figure "sketches" yesterday. Two "squads" of five one more range based and the other more up close and personal. Both have a leader type guy and a heavy bolteresque guy. Yes i know primaris don't have heavy bolters because they can squeeze it into a pistol but big two hander machine guns are cool.

I also took a few old metal bits into work today to repurpose them.

Plastic glue and a little saw arrived in the post today so can actually start putting the pieces together and make a start.

Interesting and good concept making use of the old metals that way. While the regular marine plastics tend to suffer a bit from "t-rex arm" syndrome when on Primaris (although deathwatch are big enough that this isn't an issue, and Mk.III is somewhat passable), terminator hands are about right for Primaris arms , so it stands to reason that the actual arms would be likewise, sans shoulder (or, as applies the storm-bolter, perhaps even with shoulder). Good call, also, on the assault cannon - fits thematically, and is a cool innovation in terms of marine-portable heavy weapons that also recalls the Heresy-era very rare instances of likewise.

There's a lot of character in those old metals that I'm not sure some of the newer plastics have - so logical to bring said metal character elements *to* the modern plastics in a few areas.

As applies heavy bolters - you'll have a devil of a time attempting to get the regular devastator ones to fit ; anything with an ammunition-feed running around to a backpack runs into the problem of the Primaris torso being differently proportioned to a regular Marine one and therefore more distance to cover between backpack and weapon. But the sternguard veteran one goes on without difficulty ; likewise for the Deathwatch infernus heavy bolter/heavy flamer , etc. [i haven't tried the plastic mk.III heavy bolter on a primaris, but should also work for same reason] .

So made some good headway, managed to clean up the bits and get the shooter half of the squad looking a but less like a pile of plastic!

med_gallery_22904_16682_53681.jpegHave the Leader to start off the gang. Kneeling, doing some bits.

med_gallery_22904_16682_56490.jpeg Next is the guy running in guns blaring.

med_gallery_22904_16682_49328.jpeg Third up is another shooting guy.

med_gallery_22904_16682_31321.jpeg The next bolter bloke will have a slightly different look when finished.

med_gallery_22904_16682_103868.jpeg Wrapping up the team is the heavy weapons guy!

Last night and today made good headway with the other half of the gang. Almost done with the posing and bits for this lot so can move onto the "basic" sculpting bits.

med_gallery_22904_16682_58595.jpeg The leader of this group leasing the charge straight in.

med_gallery_22904_16682_95526.jpeg Then we have one of the squad who's stepped back a second.

med_gallery_22904_16682_83659.jpegNumero Tri is just charging in.

med_gallery_22904_16682_44974.jpeg Is he a medic is he a champion , who knows.

med_gallery_22904_16682_88051.jpeg Closing up with the heavy weapons guy again!

Still waiting on some pieces of ebay to wrap these guys up. Hoping ill be able to get a few of the marines through the next stage over the weekend. This'll be the minor sculpting to make all the pieces blend together and make everything look smooth and tidy. Once that is all done I shall start putting/sculpting on the thematic and general space marine ornamentation.

Hello

This weekend i want to try and get one guy pretty much ready for painting. Opted for leader of the ranged squad. Can't decide whether he should have his rifle at his side or up on his thigh. What do you lot think?

Option A)

med_gallery_22904_16682_34389.jpegmed_gallery_22904_16682_41303.jpeg

Option B)

med_gallery_22904_16682_48513.jpegmed_gallery_22904_16682_54914.jpeg

Bit more work put in today.

med_gallery_22904_16682_75868.jpegmed_gallery_22904_16682_63231.jpegmed_gallery_22904_16682_63844.jpegmed_gallery_22904_16682_79668.jpeg

Think this guy is almost done. Need to put the tyranid hunter logo on his left pauldron guard, Spruce up the bolter and decide what to put on his chest. The chainmail cloak also needs some work but may end up just removing it. I was trying to mimic this old official artwork. I've got the concept but execution isn't quite there, may try again and scrap it if i cant get it right.gallery_22904_16682_8045.jpeg

Yes! This is getting good! I actually like the skirt. Maybe he uses the plates on it to showcase small trophies. I can just hear the rattle and jangles as he jogs from cover to cover, laying down suppressive fire.

So first guy is all wrapped up......

Low Gothic: Myrddin

High Gothic: Brother Apothecary Mencius

Mencius was a survivor of the first Tyrannic war. Like many of the Marines following Chaplain Cassius, following the loss of the Entire first company to hive fleet behemoth, Mencius was promoted from the 3rd company to replenish the ranks. Here he served as a vanguard veteran for right up until the Second tyrannic war broke out upon the invasion of Hive fleet Kraken. It was during these conflicts where Mencius found himself drafted into the Apothecarion.

By this time it was well known that the savage tyranids would consume a Battle-Brother completely, feasting on his bio-matter and combining it with their own. The utter death of a marines genetic legacy is considered a great shame by the Apothecarion and Apothecaries would fight their way through hordes of chitinous horrors to recover the dead. If the gene-seed cannot be recovered then it was decreed that it must be destroyed, as allowing the genetic remains of a Space Marine to fall into xenos hands was unforgivable. In extreme cases the Apothecary will even destroy himself, especially if his Narthecium is filled with extracted Astartes genetic material, rather than risk such sacred DNA being absorbed by the Tyranids.

It was one such occasion were Mencius found his name etched into the annals of the Ultramarines chapter Heros. His unit has been sent to reinforce some of the remaining Emperors Scythes. An apothecary of the Emperors Scythes chapter pushed forward into the hive city on Bosphor to retrieve the geneseed of his fallen brethen with a squad of veterans before it could be devoured. Unfortunately the swarm was too great and although the apothecary managed to retrieve a great amount of geneseed it did not look like Hive Fleet Kraken would be denied this feast. One by one the veteran fell until the Apothecary was alone. Mencius' coms picked up on the Apothecaries calls for support or an exfil, but nobody else got the signal. Disobeying a direct order from his sergeant Mencius ignited his jump pack and bounded from rooftop to rooftop in the direction the single had originated. As he got closer he could hear the roar of a chainsword below him, and caught a glint of yellow armour being swarmed by a red and beige horde of talons and teeth. Mencius crashed into the Tyranids swinging his dual sided chain-glaive in sweeping arcs killing dozens of tyranids in the first few seconds. This caused the monsters to hesitate for a second and draw back slightly. This brief respite allowed Mencius to check on the apothecary and realise the extent of his injuries. Only the Drive to save his brothers gene seed has kept the Emperors scythe on his feet. He had lost his right arm and had Tyranid claws and talons impaled all over his body. Blood slicked his armour as not even the enhanced clotting factors of an astartes could keep up with the extent of his injuries. It was deathly clear he would be leaving the materium shortly. He looked Mencius in the eyes and muttered only one line;

" You must remove our geneseed from the battlefield Ultramarine, to lose so much of our genefathers legacy would be irredeemable."

With that he fired his narthecium into his throat removing his own geneseed. Mencius knew what must be done. With one movement he swept his glaive forward removing the dead apothecaries arm, grabbed it in his other hand and ignited his jumppack. He flew with an urgent haste he never had before, redlining his jump packs thrusters until he made it back to command. When he descended to the ground, he had to disengage his jump pack before landing as the strain he had placed the engines under had become too much. Mencius crashed to the ground outside the Emperors Scythes command tent and was rapidly thrown forward by the explosion of his jump pack. Within seconds he was surrounded by the newly appointed Chapter Masters Honour guard. Mencius presented the apothecaries Narthecium to Chapter Master Thrasius. As thanks for saving 48 of the severely diminished chapters gene seed, Thrasius gifted Mencius a retro artificers jumppack dating back to before the founding of the Emperors Scythes.

Upon his return to Maccrage, it was deemed by the leaders of the legion that for saving so much geneseed of an Ultramarine successor he would be inducted into the Apothecarion and become a protector of the chapters geneseed.

med_gallery_22904_16682_65824.jpeg

Tested the blues today. Which do you guys think is best 1, 2 or 3?

1.med_gallery_22904_16682_33422.jpeg

2.med_gallery_22904_16682_47978.jpeg

3.med_gallery_22904_16682_62264.jpeg

First two are good, 1 is quite a nice ultramarine blue but the bright old school vibe of no2 is a bit appealing too. For the third the paints just didn't seem to mesh well with the airbrush. Tried zenith highlights, didn't quite get it but when I've decided 100% what I'm going to do I'll get more practice in.
