I had a situation come up in a game that brought about a difference in interpretation on the Lookout Sir rule. Suppose there are 4 units relevant to this question: there is enemy unit "X" and own unit "A" "B" and "C". Enemy X is firing. Own unit A is an infantry squad with 2 models, B is a Character, C is a vehicle.

The closest unit to the firing enemy X, is A then B, then C. Visually, it would be something like this:

X---A-B-C

Unit B (the character) is within 3" of unit C (the vehicle). Lookout Sir says that if a character is within 3" of a friendly vehicle, it cannot be targeted. Lookout Sir then goes on to say that if a character is the closest visible enemy it can be targeted anyway.

As I understand it, Unit C (Vehicle) would grant Lookout Sir to Unit B (Character). Then, because Unit A (2-man Infantry) is closer to firing enemy X, unit X can not target Unit B (Character). Basicly, B has the benefit of Lookout Sir from C which can be bypassed if B is the closest enemy to a firing model. B is not the closest though in this case, A is, and therefore enemy X cannot bypass the benefit of Lookout Sir offered by unit C.

According to my opponent, the fact that unit A had less than 3 models meant that enemy X can ignore it and say that B is the closest. I agree that A wouldn't give my character the benefit of Lookout Sir, but their position would prevent my openent from bypassing Lookout Sir since B is not the closest to enemy X, right?

Taken from the Core book FAQ, page 1 https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/OL1Tpd9PYuULgndP.pdf

Page 219 – Look Out, Sir Change this rule to read: Models cannot target a unit that contains any Character models with a Wounds characteristic of 9 or less with a ranged weapon while that Character unit is within 3" of any of the following:

• A friendly unit that contains 1 or more Vehicle or Monster models with a wounds characteristic of 10 or more.

• A friendly non-Character unit that contains 1 or more Vehicle or Monster models.

• A friendly non-Character unit that contains 3 or more models.

In all cases, if that Character unit is both visible to the firing model and it is the closest enemy unit to the firing model, it can be targeted normally. When determining if that Character unit is the closest enemy unit to the firing model, ignore other enemy units that contain any Character models with a Wounds characteristics of 9 or less.

Cannot shoot at an enemy Character with 9 or less wounds while it is within 3" of a friendly unit that contains 1 Monster, 1 Vehicle or 3+ other models (excluding Character models with 9 or less wounds) unless it is the closest target.

In your scenario you wouldn't be able to shoot the character until you killed Unit A. Unit A doesn't even need to be visable or an eligible target (due to being in melee for instance) to protect the character as long as it's closer to the shooting unit.

I hope this clears it up for you.
