I know melee isn't our speciality, but we can actually do some work in it if we invest. The issue is whether the investment is worth it. So here is my fun and silly Ultras melee brick.

-5 man squad of bladeguard

-10 man assault intercessor squad with a thunderhammer

-redemptor dread

-ancient with our relic for extra attacks

-Chaplain

The thinking is the the chaplain gives all units plus 1 to wound while the ancient gives all models an extra attack and gives the bladeguard plus one to hit. Then the dread pops wisdom of the ancients for re roll wounds. You can then pop our strat for re roll 1s to hit on the bladeguard.

So you will have 26 master crafted power sword attacks hitting on twos and re rolling 1s with plus 1 to wound and re rolling 1s to wound. The dread will benefit too from from all these buffs, as will the assault intercessors who will have a disgusting amount of attacks and will also get plus 1 to wound and re re roll ones to wound. You can also bust the strat to fight again with them. They may even be a better target for our re roll strat as they can re roll all hits with it, being troops. You can even use our squad doctrines strat

To put them in assault doctrine to make those plus one to wound chainswords ap 2.

It's all resource intensive, but we do have a lot of cp. Just a fun thought experiment on how we can leverage our strats and relics into melee if we want, even though we are geared more toward shooting in general.

As a Primaris focus this is solid. It is however very slow. You can definitely add a Repulsor but of course that's a very specific influence on a list. I like the idea of Bladeguard coming out of a Repulsor as an assault force, but you definitely need other attacking elements to ensure target priority isn't too easy for the opponent.

Really I'd say Vanguard Veterans and Terminators are your best bet for assaulting the opponent. The former are really fast and Terminators can teleport close and with a Chaplain Litany using Commanding Oratory you can increase their chance of making a charge very easily.

One or both of these units can help a Primaris assault force and in the case of Terminators can benefit from being Ultramarines with their bolter fire. Or not if Assault Terminators.

Agreed. :) I wouldn't actually run that primaris brick, it was mostly a thought exercise to show the various ways we can buff melee that other chapters can't.

Also, yeah, commanding Oratory is amazing. Does it allow us to use a third litany that our chaplain doesn't know?

Could you not also make the assault intercessor squad vets. That would be a lot of thunderhammer swings on the charge if combined with the banner. Better yet have two squads for 2 thunderhammers. Edited by Subtleknife
