So many  rules and books and FAQs to parse so I thought I'd put it here.

What are my options with the 9th edition SM codex + the previous chapter sub-codices + allowances for running a successor chapter.  What do I gain and what do I give up?

Example:

My Indomitus Marines are painted in Black Templar colors/livery.  The Faith and Fury FAQ seems to suggest BT do not get Knights of Sigismund super-doctrine for Assault. Thus, I think I'm going to call them "Templar Fidelis" and make them a successor chapter of something.

If I elected to do this I would, presumably:

-pick 2 successor tactics from the new SM codex.

-lose access to Helbrecht, Emps Champ, Grimaldus, Crusader Squads

-gain access to Librarians

-lose access to all bespoke BT stratagems, relics, and extra chaplain littanies from Faith and Fury.

Then turn to one of the sub-codices to decide on which first founding chapter I'm from, and follow all the rules for Successor chapters from there.  Is that right?  Let's say I decided that Templar Fidelis were a successor of Iron Hands (because that's the book I have in my lap right now). I could:

-use Iron Hands warlord traits

-use Iron Hands Special Issue wargear relics and/or Relics of Medusa IF I use the Bequeathed by Iron Council Stratgem (which *is* officially still allowed, right?)

-use all Iron Hands stratagems

-use all Technomancy psychic powers

-use Calculated Fury super doctrine

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don’t have the codex in front of me, but pretty sure that if you want to play as a successor and access specific chapter traits and strats, you are forced to take the founding chapter tactic, and can’t take 2x successor tactics

1) I strongly suspect that losing Knights of Sigismund was an oversight, DA BA and SW did not lose their super-doctrines in their 'index' documents.

2) I do have the codex in front of me and so far as I can tell nothing in the new codex overrides the Codex Suppliment's rules for picking successor traits, so yes; you still pick a parent chapter and either two sub-traits or Inheritors of the Primarch and then get access to their warlord traits, Librarian disciple, strats, etc etc.

If you are a DA/SW successor, you are required to take Inheritors of the Primarch for Dark Angels/Space Wolves to have access to certain rules.

For example, both Inner Circle and Jink require you to have Grim Resolve, and Berserk Charge requires you to have Hunters Unleashed for Dark Angels and Space Wolves respectively.

You could take custom traits, but those abilities would have no affect.

I believe as you mentioned it is correct, but I still need to familiarize myself with how successors work in the book.

I personally think losing Knights of Sigismund was an oversight. I do not know their plans for Black Templars, but I would think either they would merge with IF in some manner or have their own book.

As no-one has addressed it yet, this is incorrect. As soon as you pick a parent chapter, you get access to strats, psychic powers, special issue wargear and warlord traits. You get access to a chapter relic via stratagems.

This is true for imperial fists, iron hands, raven guard, ultramarines, salamanders and white scars successors. Other comments about DA, BA and SW are more accurate than me (darn codex stuck in the mail)

What am I, chopped liver? :p
