b1soul
In Tempest, a Ancient Tyrrenius, an Ultramarine Dreadnought, was a veteran of the First Magellanic Expedition. Has this tidbit ever be expanded upon? It seems the Imperium did engage in some extra-galactic exploration? The Milky Way has a diameter of roughly 105,700 light years. The Large Magellanic Cloud is roughly 163,000 light years from the Milky Way The Small Magellanic Cloud is roughly 206,000 light years from the Milky Way. Travelling back and forth from the Milky Way to either Magellanic galaxy would surely be an arduous undertaking but doesn't seem to be an impossible task. Aslo, we know the Imperium has a number of relic ships used by the Custodes, the Ist Legion , and (later) the Grey Knights capable of traversing through the Milky Way at incredible speed. So you'd think any extra-galactic expedition would make use of such ships? Beren
Crusade mentions that there were at least eight extra-galactic expeditions, the eight being launched from Thramas, lead by the Emperor and being responsible for the destruction of a major Khrave nest world, possibly the one the Lion vowed to destroy in his primarch novel. However, it's not guaranteed that Magellanic refers to the Magellanic cloud, since names have a tendency to crop up many times over meaning different things in 40k. Brother-Captain Gilead
We also know of the existence of the Shield worlds that supposedly existed in the dark between galaxies just off of the Eastern Fringe, but I have always thought them to be relatively close to the Milky Way rather than halfway between the Milky Way and a neighboring galaxy. As to who you would send on an extra-galactic mission I would think a Mechanicus explorator fleet traveling with a combination of conventional drives and warp jumps would make the most sense since they are really durable when it comes to their command staff as well as really self-sufficient. Additionally their ability to turn a suitable planet into a proto-Forge World that is then able to produce whatever else is necessary to supply and maintain their fleet would be really useful from the point of view of colonizing a planet in a definitely foreign and potentially hostile galaxy. b1soul
Would be odd if they were using "Magellanic" in a different sense though...super misleading Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/366986-the-magellanic-expeditions/#findComment-5616681 Share on other sites
