Weaverman
Hi all and thanks in advance for anyone answering my questions. I first started playing 40K a long time ago when I first got into GW, since then I migrated into fantasy. I have now started collecting salamanders with the aim to do tournaments and play. I have some questions I can’t seem to get my head around. Do all characters get a warlord trait and relic for no points cost? Say I have a captain/apothecary & Judicar in my list. Aggressors with flame storm gauntlets and fragstorm grenade launcher, can they shoot both weapons in the shooting phase? For 9th is a mixed list of combat and shooting the best approach with troops to hold/secure objectives? Bolter discipline - stand still or half range = double the amount of shots with rapid fire weapons? If I go for a foot slogging list is that a big weakness for me? Many thanks Edited October 16, 2020 by Weaverman Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367077-questions-from-a-new-player/ Share on other sites
BluejayJunior
You get one free choice for a relic. It can be given to any character that meets its requirements. You give a warlord trait for your warlord only. There are stratagems that can let you add these to additional characters, but only one of each for free. Aggressors cannot be equipped with flamestorm gauntlets and fragstorm launchers. It's either flamestorm gauntlets or boltstorm/fragstorm. They can shoot both in the shooting phase. Models shoot either all their pistol weapons or all their non-pistol weapons. Rapid fire weapons mean that you double the number of shots when under half range. Bolter Discipline allows you to also meet that requirement when you've remained stationary or have the keywords listed in the description (Dreadnought, bikers, terminators). This means that you would double the shots if you met any of those conditions. It should be noted that you do not double the shots for each of the conditions listed, just once. If a marine with a bolter is within half range and also didn't move, it would still only have 2 shots. I'll leave the list building questions for others. How you build your list depends on a lot of factors. What chapter you are, your playstyle, whether you're playing competitive tournaments or casual, your play group. Weaverman
Thank you Frater that is really helpful! To confirm each of my characters can have a relic for free and not just my warlord providing they meet the conditions specified in the relic? Mandragola
BlueJay already answered the rules stuff. In terms of list building, I think you can do fine with foot-slogging. It kind of depends how extreme you want to go with that theme though. The game relies on taking and holding objectives, so you do want a mixture of shooting and melee, so you can go up to the enemy and take stuff from them. If you just have stuff that can move 6" you'll have a hard time. The enemy will be able to outmanoeuvre you and some of their stuff will be able to hit you from complete safety. That's a pretty bad scenario so you're better off with something quick and/or long-ranged to take them on. There are plenty of options for this - outriders and inceptors look very good right now. Edit: no, not every character gets a relic and trait. Your Warlord gets a trait and you get one free relic. You can buy more of both with stratagems. tychobi
9th is largely unknown due to very small data samples of competative games and a huge recent faq. Footslogging works fine if you understand its limitations and do not mind painting a pile of models. Gravis armor, terminators, cents are barely infantry as it is often more efficient to shoot em with anti tank weapons. Mixed combat lists take finesse and experience to play well but sallies do it very well. Good luck out there! Ishagu
9th is only just starting, so it's hard to say exactly what list archetypes will be the most potent. Foot-slogging is actually OK as the boards are smaller (this has made the game better as units are generally more engaged throughout) and it wouldn't be a detriment to making a good list, but you should have some added mobility either through fast moving units or transports. You get 1 free relic per list, and 1 free Warlord trait for your warlord. You can spend Command Points to buy more relics and traits but the numbers are limited based on the game size. Going back to the game itself - it's very much objective based and often those objectives will cause armies to get close, so close combat is very likely in games. Some units that that can screen and engage in melee will be valuable. Marines are generally a mid range shooting army with above average Close combat elements.
