I remember there being an errata in a Big FAQ or a CA somewhere that said Daemon units couldn't just be summoned out of thin air anymore and had to be paid for as part of the list. I can't find that rule anymore, does anyone know what I'm talking about and whether it still exists? Edited by TheNewman

I finally found it, it's on page 241 in the section on building an army. In matched play if you want to use a rule that would add a unit to your army or replace a destroyed unit from your army you have to have set aside some of your points as Reserve Points to pay for the new unit. Rules that add models to an existing unit do not hit this restriction.

Summoning has some value as a Deep Strike that doesn't cost CP, but it renders some o the Tyranid strats completely pointless.

Those tyranid strats are useless in matched play because they weren't designed for matched play. Same with the Valhallan specific stratagem in the Astra Milatarum book. Genestealer Cults also have a generally useless summoning stratagem.

At least in GSC if you want to avoid the only one character type per detachment you can pay the points and summon in the same character, like two kellermorphs, etc. I don't know if it's been changed.
