VIth
Per the recent Goonhammer article (linked below), Space Wolves are looking quite good out of the gate in 9th edition. Overall, they are the most-winning Space Marine faction, although they’ve experienced a dip post-Space Marine Codex drop two weeks ago (still #4 out of all the Space Marine subfactions). This should only improve one they receive access once again to a full menu of strategems and sagas. https://www.goonhammer.com/the-november-2020-40k-meta-review/?fbclid=IwAR1hhAmDQeXDTMbEpDuA8owKxLoYWP2SfIuxayPODwLPYFKkxNGpmjRPGV4 ranulf the revenant 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367358-space-wolves-competitive-potential/ Share on other sites
Jorin Helm-splitter
Yeah they definitely have potential. I do think our rating is impacted by how popular we are as a fraction and the smaller sample size. That said the supplement can only help at this point. Karhedron
9th Ed looks to be about scrums over mid-table Objectives and I think Wolves will excel here. Grey Hunters with 2 wounds, chainswords and the ability to double-down on special weapons look really strong as a Troop choice. Wulfen are no longer the powerhouse unit they were in 8th but Thunderwolves look like they might be returning in a big way. A Thunderlord with Chapter Master, Storm Shield and Angel's Artifice has to be one of the tankiest untargetable Characters in 9th edition with T6, 9 wounds, and a 1+/4++/6+++ save with the Iron Resolve WLT. 5 Long Fangs with MMs in a Drop Pod are potentially a lot easier to bring on the target than Eradicators and can drop in on T1. Ragnar is a beast and our ability to HI with all units in a congested mid-field scrap looks potentially strong. Only time will tell if it is possible to bring these elements into a cohesive and effective force at normal points levels but my hunch is Wolves will be pretty good in 9th. Not brokenly OP but after several editions of being behind the curve, I think Wolves will at least be in contention for a place on the top tier. svane jotunsbane and TiguriusX 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367358-space-wolves-competitive-potential/#findComment-5625295 Share on other sites
VIth
Yeah they definitely have potential. I do think our rating is impacted by how popular we are as a fraction and the smaller sample size. That said the supplement can only help at this point. Popular factions that are popular throughout editions even when they’re not good (ie Space Wolves, Orks, Blood Angels, Tyranids, etc) are dramatically pulled down in power rankings because there are so many “casuals” doing mediocre or bad with them at tournaments (ie players like me, haha). So, if anything, their potential is stronger than the initial showing. Jorin Helm-splitter
Typically I'd agree but I think the Pandemic has filtered out the casuals like us. So you end up with the most competitive of us representing the fraction. VIth
Great competitive read of the book by Goonhammer (written by some successful competitive SW players). https://www.goonhammer.com/codex-supplement-space-wolves-the-goonhammer-review/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367358-space-wolves-competitive-potential/#findComment-5625503 Share on other sites
