Hi all

Back into the hobby after a good while away (have lurked here on and off throughout)

Was hoping for a bit of advice on a suitable colour/terrain type for the bases of my Primaris marines.

Have attached a picture of my (not quite finished but close enough to get an idea) test mini (yeah, I know my painting is pretty terrible - don't be too harsh!! Hopefully it will improve over time)

All advice much appreciated!

For me it would be something that contrasts with the mini but doesn't draw your eye away. GW colour app has images of all the basing paints they do. Depending on what you want to do you could either use one of these or just take inspiration for a colour. You could then use static grass/ flock to break up the colour if you wanted to.

For a few of my projects I have gone with a theme, a snow covered rocky type, city fighting type etc. That can often help decide on a colour.

Edit, your painting is looking good BTW!

General advice is to go with a darker base if you have a lighter model and vice versa. The generic GW brown/sand might not work with yours due to the bone/ivory of your model.

Are you looking for a plain kind of painted sand base, or would you be open to some of GW's texture options? I feel martian Ironcrust might work well, otherwise Astrogranite debris.

I've found the sector imperialis bases go well with just about anything.

Are you likely to be fighting on any particular gaming board frequently? If so, it might be cool to vaguely match that. My Marines have green flocked bases (a real 90s throwback) since I regularly played on a green baseboard for many years.

First, that's a very respectable paint job! A cool black (black either highlighted with dark blue or with a bit of blue mixed in) base color would work very well. GW makes Mordant Earth technical paint which gives a cracked earth texture, but there are other options as well depending on if you want to paint the bases separately from the miniatures.
