So I had a controversial thought: what if the Iron Hands are really one of the more deranged armies in 40k? They have the ability to turn off or inhibit their emotions as needed especially when killing, something people with antisocial personality disorder are known to be able to do. They treat humans as expendable assets at best and weak annoyances at worst. The Iron Hands are ruthless and logical to a psychopathic degree. While the Night Lords, Drukhari, Emperor's Children, and Black Legion are known to practice extreme sadism the Iron Hands feel nothing, which is arguably more terrifying and inhuman. Out of grief, feelings of failure, and respect for their primarch they practice unconscionable levels of body modification via cybernetic enhancement. While the Iron Warriors do that to curb mutation this chapter does it as a ritualistic, common practice. That is not sane behavior. What do you all think, are the Iron Hands mostly sane or are they completely off the rails insane?

I don't think they are psychopaths, more the product of millenia of indoctrination and dogma based on the failure of Mannus. I think it's more rites of passage that have gotten out of hand in a similar way it has become religion with the Adeptus Mechanicus.
