If you are looking to make a close combat beast Watchmaster, one option is the following:

-Watchmaster

-Relic: Spear of the First Vigil (S+2 AP-3 Dmg3 for melee, 24" RF2 S4 Ap-1 Dmg2, Special Issue Ammo for shooting)

-WL Trait 1: Salamanders +2 Strength

-WL Trait 2: Imperium's Sword (Reroll charges, +1S/+1A on the charge)

Total, on the charge, this gives him 6 x S9 Ap-3 Dmg3 attacks on the charge, all at WS2+ (he can use the Chapter Master ability to give himself retools to Hit, if you really want to ensure your damage output).

Additionally, he puts out 4 x S4 AP-1 Dmg2 shots at 12", again at BS2+ .

Finally, he has 6W at T4 2+/4++, so decently tough in his own right.

If you want to amp him all the way up, have a friendly Librarian cast Might of Heroes on him (so then he is at S10 and 7 attacks on the charge, as well as being up to T5) and, if appropriate (it takes away the Watch Master's Invul too, so choose wisely when to use it) Null Zone to take away the Invuls of enemies he is attacking.

The biggest limiter of this is that we at most can get 3 warlord traits in the entire army(unless I am missing something). Means no apoth or chaplain amongst other things,

however he will Blender any elite unit he hits so it might pay off.

Wait sorry what, you get more warlord traits in the larger army sizes?

There are two Stratagems, one in the Marine Codex and one in our supplement, that allow for additional warlord traits. The one form the Marine Codex can be used more than once in larger games.

This one looks really tasty, I'm fortunate that I painted up my Watch Master as a Salamander on a whim so I think I'll give this one a go myself when I eventually get to play.

at first I was thinking of that but then I figured my watch master may often take a more flexible roll so I made him a random successor chapter. I like blood angels one with fight first and I like the black templars one as well.

You can really manipulate your your choice of targets with that 6 inch heroic intervention.

I've used him with it while having a judicar nearby. He's mostly there to use is temporal trick against characters that tag team with units or if its a super choppy unit that can take a beating...I may decide to move in a position to stab some stuff so he contributes but also kills his way out of engagement range avoiding squad leader with a nasty weapon that usually is removed last

I popped off my shoulderpad and put a custom one on just for the versatility. I will eventually settle on a trait but that won’t happen for awhile till I get some games in and have a feel for how the army places.....which might be 6 months out haha...,
