Hobby Block advice

Hey, all, I was hoping to get some advice on how to deal with Hobby Block. I've been having major issues having motivation or interest in anything hobby related for a couple months now. How do you guys deal with this, do you have any videos to recommend or thoughts?

For me I have found social hobbying is the best way to get motivated is to get a few mates around, crack some cold ones and just spend an arvo painting with some youtube or something in the background.

 

of course if the apocalypse still has you under lockdown you can set up a video chat. Just being able to talk to people, show off what you are doing and compare work can be a great help. At least it has been for me.

Crusade is my answer to everything these days. You only need 25PL to start; that's a single patrol detachment.

 

The army grows from there by fighting, and the growth can be as slow as you need it to be to suit your pace; if you're a slow painter and modeler, spend your requisition points on power ups and relics. If you're ready to add a unit, burn your RP on that.

 

The story that you build by fighting battles; the experience and battle honours earned should be all the inspiration you need. After five games, you'll literally have an army that became characters by fighting. It's a heck of a ride. I'll still play matched if my opponent wants, but it feels empty by comparison.

I've found reading the novel's, or listening to the audio drama's to massively helpful. On many occasions, they've inspired a new project, or revitalised on old one. I suspect the upcoming cartoons / animated shows will also add to this space.

As well as above, sometimes a break is necessary to re-orientate yourself and review your hobby priorities.

Yes, talking hobby is the next best thing if you can't do hobby :P Sometimes a break is what you need so don't be afraid to take a time out if you must, better in the long run. Otherwise clearing your decks does wonders so projects aren't weighing you down. I did this more literally where I made an effort to finish outstanding work and clear my hobby area, keeping only my active projects (no more than three at once) out.

 

This made me quite productive, though after lots of hobby I needed a change so I finished my current projects and started painting up single miniatures from other armies. No obligation or time frames, and an excuse to try out new things :) Variety is the spice of life so don't be afraid to let your hobby wander - it is here for your enjoyment after all so take that however you please ;)

Was it something specific that brought it on, or is it just a general feeling that you can't be bothered to build/paint any minis?

 

I've dealt with both situations before. If it's just general lack of motivation, don't beat yourself up - it will return. If it's that point where you're midway through a project and it feels like it's never gonna end, a break might help; or thinking about what you'd like to do next - having something lined up as a 'reward' for completing your current 'thing' can be a decent motivator, I find.

 

Or it might just be time to take a break from the hobby? I did. But at the time I got quite jaded with 40k/GW, so I needed it. I tried Deadzone (liked building the terrain but the background didn't grab me), then really got in to building Lego (yes, really!). I wasn't sure I'd ever return to painting 40k stuff, but I was tempted back by Kill Team, and I've been at it pretty constantly since.

 

So don't worry about it too much, maybe try something different in the meantime - when the time's right, you'll get back to this hobby :)
