Little bit of story first.

So when apocalypse sets came out I bought the imperial knights set for the castellan and armigers on a sale and whim.

I was also playing Kill team with a small deathwatch set.

So now with 9th edition I'm curious about how to build onto the knights with supportive deathwatch.

I know it's got issues, but their muddy bases match ;)

How would you set up deathwatch teams to aid the knights?

We have so many new units I could add to my one Proteus and some intercessors, I'm not sure where to even start.

Edit: I've been following the "dipping my toes" thread, and my thoughts here are just focusing some of that down. I love the idea of the spectrus teams. I did have the cookie cutter 5 ints, 4 aggressors and inceptor unit. That obviously doesn't work anymore.

As a starting point for your thoughts...

- You lose doctrine

- Our units generally cost more due to customizations vs wants

You probably want your units to be as self sufficient as possible in the role that you choose for them to represent - backline shooting, front line shooting/assault, tough objective cappers, speedy objective cappers, etc.

Maybe start with a patrol - a Captain and 2-3 units. If you need speed, add biker or outriders. Your knights (Castellan specifically) can probably handle most of your anti-tank. The box had... Helverins in it? So they could do a bit of multi-role when it comes to target types. If you want to sit back shoot, add some stalker bolters or stalker bolt rifle types. If you want to get in their face quickly and focus on killing, you can look at a jump pack or bike HQ with the beacon angelis as well as drop podding some sort support for turn 1 aggression.

I suspect there will be a lot of CP usage between both armies so sort out the most important stratagems - character killing hunter killer missile, rotating shields, rapid fire, extra warlord traits, brotherhood of veterans, etc.

And you can try to use rhinos or impulsors to protect them for the initial turns.

Basically, I just slapped the squad and watch master from my Kill Team game on the field with the knights, and then added primaris to fill the gap to get a battalion with the sniper bolters and a big bully unit with aggressors. I'm hoping to keep to that allied theme if possible. Just looking for how to best work with what it's got. And/or if some kind of spectrus team would be a better replacement for the intercessors, who just stood on objectives and killed troops.

Looking at the specialisms upgrades: yes it's pricy, but could that be worth it to gain back part of the chapter tactics and not just field overpriced 'tac' squads?

I admit I get hung up on, and miss some details, of which rules stay and turn off allying this way. Other opinions are always great, and honestly with how flexible deathwatch can be I'm aware there isn't a single "best" answer.
