Kythnos
Fellow Warsmiths, I recently embarked on a crusade campaign a have just added a Venomcrawler to my roster. Since all my units in my crusade force have some kind of name, I wanted to do the same for my stabby-killy machine. However, I have not been able to come up with a theme or method to draw the name from. Thus, I wanted to ask how you would go about this? Tallarn Commander
Some naming options include... -Alliteration: my Maulerfiend's name is Mary. -Lazy naming: my Defiler's name is Deffy. -Thematic Naming: my Blood Slaughterers are named BloodLady and 888. Mithrilforge
I'd go with "Bob" ... he was the scary guy that possesed people in Twin Peaks to sum him up - He is an interdimensional entity who feeds on pain and sorrow. An inhabiting spirit, he possesses human beings and then commits acts of and murder in order to feast upon his victims. if that isn't chaos...I don't know what would be Mithril Edited November 24, 2020 by mithrilforge Kythnos 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367847-naming-daemon-engines/#findComment-5635383 Share on other sites
Goreshed
All depends on where you wish to take your army and it's theme. Generally speaking, Iron Warriors over the years have had some sort of a Greek name or feel to it. Given the fact that it is a machine, something like what Lucerne said would be pretty fitting given the Iron Warrior's way of thinking. Could also try and keep in mind each class of deamon engine. So a 'smaller' one such as the venom crawler be some form of one name while a 'mid tier' such as a mauler be another style while the 'large' ones be refereed to in another manner. Kythnos
Thank you for the input, everyone! I appreciate it. I will likely run with Lucerne's and Goreshed's ideas for now, since those fit the ideas and themes that I have behind my Iron Warriors crusade force. MegaVolt87
You could also just give them a numeric derivative instead of a name, numerics would make sense as well from a dark mech angle. Kythnos
In the end I went with <greek letter> - <number> as naming formula. Following this decision the abovementioned Venomcrawler received the Name Heta-52. All Venomcrawlers will be classified as <Heta>, while other daemon engines will receive different letters. Filkarion
Late to the party but I have to say: Name + numbers are great Latin is also very cool if you want a more 40k vibe (Maledictus->cursed), you can also use entire phrases (Vae victis->Woe to the conquered, Ruina mundi->ruination of the world). Latin can express epic concepts in few words and has a strong 40k vibe. (I guess this can be done also with Greek, amazing sounds) Mythology is a wonderful source. Greek/Roman mythology is used a lot in 40k vehicles names (Hydra, Chimera etc..). But you can do wonders with all names from mythologises all around the world (African/Asian/South Americans comes to my mind) It's also quite interesting and useful for personal knowledge. For Demon Engines my personal favorites are angels names, for implicit significance and probably for Evangelion influence in my teens Now that I think about it, old anime robot enemies are probably one of the inspirations for Daemon Engines! Garada K7, Ozones B3, Abdora U6 or Gromazen R9 (Mazinga Mechanical beats names) are all fine names for your monsters and bound to cause a laugh in some older hobbyist (Yes I am one of them) Kythnos and Dr_Ruminahui 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367847-naming-daemon-engines/#findComment-5636008 Share on other sites
Mendi Warrior
I like the convention you choose. If you want to add "nicknames", there was an old codex, Chaos Daemons (2018), where there was kind of a table with naming "conventions". I'd have to do some digging to find it. On the web, I found this link http://nurgle.stelio.net/names.php with other references to naming conventions. Marshal Loss
Alternatively you can just make up some kind of bonkers daemon name by hitting the keyboard a bit until you get something you're happy with, e.g. Za'kyll'skora. GW do that sort of malarkey all the time Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367847-naming-daemon-engines/#findComment-5636314 Share on other sites
MasterDeath
I call my Venomcrawler: "The bound One" and "The chained One". Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/367847-naming-daemon-engines/#findComment-5636491 Share on other sites
MadEdric
My first Venomcrawler is named Mr. Scree. It's because anytime I pick him up I have to go "Screee!" at him. My second will be named Mr. Hiss.
