I bought some Streaking Grime and other products from AK interactive to play with, and I notice that it has quite a strong smell (I'm not using an airbrush, just brushing it on). Should I be masking up I'm using any enamel based products? If so, what sort of mask should I be looking to get?

Hi Brother, just comparing notes with you here, and good job looking after yourself and others you may live with.

I don't use Streaking Grime (looks cool though), but I do regularly use Tamiya Smoke (the Japanese car model brand, the twin stars).  It's also enamel-based and has a strong smell.  To compare, it has this sweet to the point of sickly smell, and the closest I can compare it to is like Jack Daniels sauce.

I do not use a mask.  Maybe I should, so I'll be following this thread.  I also think the smell is strongest the very 1st time you open a new bottle, then it dissipates.

Unless you airbrush, just opening a window and have the room well ventialted is suffiecient if you just going to paint brush with it.

Mask with chemical filter (active carbon?) is necessary if you airbrush with enamels, and other solvent/alcohol based paints. Just particle filter won't keep the solvent fumes from flowing through the mask filter.

Probably your best bet would be to ask AK, as they're the only ones who know what's in it. :)

As for masks, the 3M ones with the removable/disposable filters are probably the best long-term choice (6000/6500/7000).

Hey, glad to see more and more people picking up enamels and other weathering products. Like sarabando said, if you're not airbrushing the enamels, just work in a well ventilated area, and you'll be totally fine. if you have any other enamel-related questions, drop me a dm.
