The Unseen
Make it 1 mortal wound, but also make it so that rerolls don't cancel the wound, just let you get a chance to hit while you explode. Over charged plasma with rerolls is barely a risk, or is stupidly dangerous without them. I dont see how having a captain around should magically make the plasma guns behave themselves. And wound allocation is easy, it goes onto the squad just like any other mortal wound, wounded models first, otherwise players choice. That does mean that a plasma gunner that over heats won't necessarily be the guy who dies, but since this is the one instance where the player doesn't control wound allocation Id be fine with that. Plus it would be dramatically easier and quicker to roll plasma. Having to roll each model individually is a pain I remember when overheating plasma just caused you to take a wound AND you could roll armor vs it, which meant there was some parity between cheap models like guardsmen and marines. Can be explained by either the gun vented hot plasma sideways and toasted an ally, or after the plasma melted a guardsman face off, his buddy gets nominated as the new lucky gunner and picks it up. I would love to give sergeants and characters plasma pistols, or use the ones on named characters more often, but losing a 130+ pt model because of an overheated plasma pistol (looking at you Mephiston) is stupid. I think they did this to make the risk of overheat universal amongst all factions. A single mortal wound to a guardsman is the same as it is now, meanwhile it's now a minor inconvenience to marines. battle captain corpus
I love Plasma weapons and always will. Rules wise I rarely care to be honest (rules tend to run in endless circles for years anyway) rule of cool far outweighs anything else. My Black Legion have a smattering of all special weapons anyway.
