Astartes Consul
Some advice from the more experiences airbrush users among you... Having recently got an airbrush, I'm keen to use it for both gloss and matte varnish application, as I know it will be better & more consistent than either brush on or rattle can. I know there are plenty of airbrush specific varnishes out there - Vallejo for example - but what are people's thoughts on using varnish from pots, thinned as you would if using non-airbursh specific paint? I have some Army Painter Matte and GW 'Ardcoat that I don't want to go to waste and would like to use up before I invest in a new product. AenarIT
I'm not familiar with the army painter one, but the 'ardcoat from GW lasts for years. I use an airbrush with airbrush-ready varnishes (vallejo), but I find the 'ardcoat extremely useful for picking out lenses or other shiny parts with a brush after the whole model is finished and varnished (often with a matte or satin one).I wouldn't worry too much about saving it for that job. Rik Lightstar
While you could indeed use the varnishes you have I doubt you gain or save much in doing so. The Vallejo Mecha Varnishes are really good through an airbrush and not particularly expensive for a bottle. I'd save the other two pots for when you want to add an different effect after your airbrush coats, either to take the gloss off "organic" surfaces like skin and hair or making things like gems more gloss by "normal" brush.
