The fact that you even felt compelled to tell someone you were bringing Morty, who also felt it was required to bring a direct counter to him, is proof of the fact that he's not balanced.

I don't know about you guys, but we always inform each other when we want to bring a LoW unit to the game in advance. Even a Baneblade

Think it's a nice thing to do for friendly games.

This, absolutely. Being able to discuss with an opponent what you are bringing stops it from being a rock/paper/scissors gotcha game.

I do think Mortarion (and most Lord of War units) are poorly implemented in that bringing one tends to totally alter the nature of the game, but, hey, we are stuck with them, so c'est la vie.

Yea fully agree.

When people are saying he is balanced, well he is as balanced in as much as a LoW can be balanced in a 2k game.

Personally, i dont mind playing the odd game against a LoW, but it gets boring really quickly. I would also like to see a rule where if you bring a LoW to a game, and your opponent doesn't, then your opponent gets to decide who goes 1st.

But yea, if you are bringing a LoW, then you should always tell your opponent. One of my most memorable games in 8th was arranging to play a game with an IG player, driving over an hour to the club, setting up the table, terrain etc, and he turns up with a baneblade and stormsword, and being wipped off the table in 2 turns, then packing everything up and driving the hour back home....yea that was real fun.

I stopped playing a guy at the FLGS in 8th because he told me to bring Space Wolves because he wanted to see what they could do. I said sure what are you bringing he said IG. I expected to play a typical Guard list. Instead he had 3 Baneblades and literally shot me off the board in two turns. I wasted an entire afternoon for that "friendly" game.

My CSMs got shot off the board by triple Repulsors after the new Space Marine Codex came out in 8th. Spent a lot of time trying to figure a counter afterward - never found one, only half-measures.

Getting back to Mortarion for a minute, I've seen a lot of discussion about counters. The only obvious one I thought of was mortal wound spam.

Aside from Deathshroud Terminators and C'Tan, what are the big things people should avoid when playing Mortarion?

I think people should avoid putting him in the centre of the board. Try to minimalize the damage he takes by putting him out of range of at elast part of the enemies guns. This depends of course on deployment. Screen him from mortal wounds with drones.

Ghazkull can probably tarpit morty for a few a rounds, depending on the damage he takes on the way.

Guys, I appreciate all of the last 6 or 7 responses, but I have to ask this question in good faith:

-Doesn't the friendly social rule that you guys are suggesting sort of prove what I'm trying to say? That Mortarion (and possibly other Lords of War) are not balanced?

If you are talking solely about Mortarion, then no, it doesn't prove your point that he's unbalanced at all. Even when Morty was considered bad before, I always informed my opponent if it'd be ok to bring him.

If you are talking about LoWs in general, then sure. But that's for friendly games, where you are more likely to bring fluffy or fun lists that are simply not capable of dealing with a Baneblade or something similar,so knowing your opponent wants to bring a LoW unit, gives you a chance to prepare and actually have a game.

So if your point is, that LoW units are unbalanced for certain sizes of friendly games, then sure. But that's the nature of LoW units, isn't it?

In my first game, Mortarion lasted exactly as long as Magnus.

Question: what detachments did you use to allow Magnus and Mortarion to appear in the same list?

AFAIK, you could only take one Supreme Allied Command detachment and that was the only way to get a Primarch.

Magnus being in the other army helped with the detachment limitations.

:P

(it was a game of Morty vs. Magnus :) )

Have tested, can say that berserkers kill Morty pretty good. Opponent was so eager to get Morty in that when he over played his hand I charged in two squads of 10 and had an Exalted Champ in aura range. RIP AND TEAR.

Details:

I went second and had my berserker squads perform the up to 9 inch pregame movement and deployed them in cover about 7 inches up.

The opponent was doing a poxwalkers list and had 2 units of Deathshroud in deepstrike. While a 3rd maxed out was escorting Typhus and possey up the board.

His anti tank other than what was mentioned were two entropy cannon PBCs which targeted my helbrutes and put them down turn 1

He charged Mortarion up the board and failed a 7 inch charge. On my turn I moved my berserkers out of cover into position, advanced my champ up the board and 2 squads made it in.

I absolutely lost that game, points wise I was demolished to bits as his army weathered the 1st wave relatively in good condition (Deathshroud are no joke in melee) and my army tends to putter out if I meet a strong enough wall.

However by the end of the game we both had taken around 85% casualties and we both walked away feeling good. He won the game and I took Mortarion's skull.

Apparently avoid playing Dark Eldar. Their poison weapons ignore toughness and they can bring a ton of shots. I know. I have a DE army.

I was thinking this, but I am wondering just how good DE are vs morty.

Assuming -1 to hit.

300 posion shots, 150 hit, 75 wound, 25 fail, 16 wounds taken

Seeing as a venon with dual splinter and a kabilite squad in side puts out a maximum of 24 shots within 12", that would be 15 venoms, with kabalites to kill him.
