I haven't posted any batreps lately because I haven't really played official competitive games for a while. T5S2 is having the invitational now and all other games are on hold until season 3 starts in 2 weeks. I finished #29 overall and missed the top 16 cut so I went looking for action to keep me busy.

 

A bunch of the EU members of the community are hosting a GT that will be starting soon.

 

If you are interested and able to play EU time zone games on TTS come on over (usually they play early morning/afternoon US times)

How it plays

Decided to go back to my favorite biker captain. Wasn't seeing benefits of a non combat phobos captain

Gave him a MC TH so he can play with Mortarion as an emergency response unit

 

Replaced my eradicators with 2 units of las fusil eliminators...I will be playing hit and run tactics using the carbine on the pack leaders

 

Librarian is new to my list for the sole purpose of null zone...he goes with the jump guard and they all stay out of LOS

The WG and Librarian are a counter assault force and a hail mary with null zone if needed

 

Testing venerable dreads and shooting instead of pure melee wulfen dreads

If I can't use the range advantage to stay safe I can always strategic reserve and arrive turn 2

 

Aggressors are my anti harlequin addition...dakka dakka overcomes their 4++ fairly well

If I get mortarion lined up I can also put a few wounds on him with catechism of fire

 

The whirlwind has been a recent addition I find useful for utility purposes...suppression fire stratagem can be used to shut off overwatch or make something fight last.

This unit lets my librarian focus on the null zone tree and carry the armor of russ instead of using the tome of malcador for murderous hurricane.

 

I will also need it to shoot foot harlies hiding behind walls out of LOS

Bad matchup for my aggressors.

Salamanders ignore AP1 and he has good saves

Good news is he has no artillery so my hit/fade style has a chance

My plan is to hold my DZ and let him come towards me. I will gladly sacrifice warrior pride points to max out WWS and Banners

If he comes at me then I need to hammer his lead elements

If I don't screw it up I can get 40 primary without leaving my DZ

I need to come out ahead on secondary points to win this game


Salamanders work best as a death ball and shouldn't be spreading out If he spreads I can pounce on his weak flank and try to kill it before he can react


I plan to use my las fusils to move...shoot...return to cover until he gets close and just generally be annoying


I win deployment roll and make him deploy first

I slow play deployment to see where he commits his forcesLooks like my flank will be overloaded

I intend to fall back and avoid if possible and focus on right flank with reinforcements

There is no apothecary on the right and no BGV protectors

If I can kill Ashmantle it will be a bonus b/c he is a WWS target

I am very happy with deployment

It fits my pre game battle plan



Basically I have WG on left and BCs on the right (2 different melee forces)

Captain starts on the left but can use turboboost to shift flanks

Librarian and Chaplain deploy center and can shift based on his deployment

I have eliminators on BOTH flanks and the Plasma dread + whirlwind on the left

BATREP


I will roll for first turn

Turn 1

Very minor just advance wolf to objective

Walk up to wall w/o touching on the right

Banners on both my objectives


No need for psyker powers

Las fusil fire and fade to kill 1 incursor (he burned 2 CP to save aggressors so I am happy)

Whirlwind rolls 3 for shots and does nothing to his VV

Quick end of my turtle turn 1

Not even worth a SS to be honest


His turn

Moves VV to get objective

Raises his DZ banners PLUS a banner in the middle area as well

This now needs to be addressed and I was not expecting it

Turn 2

I buff dread with catechism of fire

I put reroll wound aura on dread

No need for psyker powers again


Dread and eliminators move left to fire...he burns CP on transhuman for his aggressors

1 las fusil wounds but he makes 2 FNP

Right side I advance BC with a 6 and move all 5 onto objective

He has a special obsec rule on the VV so we are even right now


I need my eliminators to either kill 1 model or fire and fade to step forward

I manage to kill a VV so I fade back behind LOS. He used a CP reroll but it still failed


My BC sacrifice removes his banner and denies the point to keep the scoring even where I need it.


I have successfully delayed 2 turns and kept the game even...turn 3 I will be going into assault doctrine and full speed attack


The bad news is I have burned CP and am down to 3...gonna be tight management late game

The fight for the game will 100% be determined on this right flank

Ashmantle kills 4/5 BC but the survivor is a threat to score hold more


He has to decide whether Ashmantle charges and becomes an easy target

VV fail to charge BC and Chaplain. Need a 5 and rolled 3 then 4 after CP reroll

Ashmantle and Vets also fail charges

Incursor fails to charge wolf (rolls a 3 needing 5)

BC makes his morale roll as well!!!

Huge failures have swung the game completely in my favor

My turn

I score hold more thanks to wolf and BC not being charged

The surviving BC plants a banner

I swing my forces hard right for a decisive assault phase

Captain turb boosts hard and I start out maneuvering my opponent

2 dreads come in right as well


Aggressors come in on the left at extreme bolter range to incursors to be annoying

I plan on falling back and just surviving next turn with them


I cast Null zone right next to his VV and prepare for the slaughter...I won't fire at his VV so I can charge and score warrior pride


Shooting I kill 2 of his eradicators on right flank despite transhuman defense

This means my dreads are likely to live

Whirlwind suppresses his VV to discourage them from attacking me


In the charge phase I have to be CAREFUL not to trigger the 12" stratagem

My captain and librarian do NOT charge as originally planned b/c Ashmantle is within KILL range and could get free HI...I should have suppressed HIM!!!


I am able to get both BCs in and 1 of the dreads into his VV

I am NOT able to get the Librarian with armor of russ...so I can't force him to swing last

Luckily the dread kills all the VV with first attack and I consolidate BCs to screen for the HQs

The BAD news is I had planned on the hunter aura being active for my WG and they won't be able to advance next turn

His turn

He buffs his left eradicators and WIPES my aggressors

Oops...dumb mistake on my part

Was NO need to be in firing range and I just threw away a huge unit and 5 VP

He picks off far dread with single eradicator and kills it too....GDAMN he is mowing through my units


Ashmantle charges and we have a friendly casual interaction

He originally moved where I could HI with captain and librarian and my dread...that would be a very dead ashmantle

I let him take it back and move to the single BC instead

I HI with Librarian and dread still but the smash captain can't reach


I only do 6/8 wounds on Ash

He splits his attacks and puts 4 on dread 2 on Librarian and 1 on BC

Kills all but dread


I forget the SS b/c of the huge fail on my part...stress begins!



Turn 4

I fail to kill Ash in shooting (roll 2 2's to shoot...) but Captain finishes the job with a charge (just barely...tons of stress on all the rolling and FNP)

Eliminators shoot eradicator and kill the single model

WG kill 1 Veteran and wrap the survivor

End of the phase Ashmantle rises from the dead with a 4+ stratagem...CRAP


We are both super low on CP now but I need to kill his WWS or this game is a hard loss

Super smite for 6 kills my captain...crap

75-79 SW loss

The dice in turn 2 when he failed all charges gave me the chance at the win but I made some big mistakes in the final turns and lost a close match


The aggressors are a unit I am experimenting with and I really wasted them this game

I put them in harms way for no reason with the drop on the left. I should have concentrated on the right and overwhelmed with everything I had


I also should NOT have cast null zone...in the assault doctrine I was making his VV roll 4 either way. All it did was hurt my units. The smart play would have been psychic fortress


A few turns I should have used the whirlwind suppression on Ashmantle as well. Shut off his overwatch AND make him fight last...new list and still making dumb mistakes


It was a good exciting match though. I just need to get better...I blame the month off with no competition for the rust


I knew I needed to win the secondaries and that is what determined the final score. Losing the aggressors for nothing and my librarian on a HI I didn't need to make was very costly


If I had just let the BC die I could have been the one charging in with everything and a suppression would have made it safe

Pregame & Deployment

Never faced a CTAN in a game before...this should be interesting

Looks like I can only do 3 wounds per phase...and it heals on its turn. So that means a 3 turn kill unless I get psychic powers off

Shoot(3)-heal(2)-shoot(5)-heal(4)-shoot(7)-melee(10) and dead b/c only 9 wounds

Alternatively he charges me and I put 3 wounds on him in his fight phase...means he dies 1 turn quicker

At first glance I don't see much ranged shooting to fear...just MW spam

Sorry BCs you get to stand in front of the army and eat it

Plan will be avoid the CTANs and see if I can score

Will take glory kills for the first time ever...necron list is basically characters/monsters so it is perfect

I can also score points for putting 3 damage a turn into his CTANS and softening them up

Painful learning experience on CTAN powers...

Good news is his wraiths fail to charge my eliminators b/c I pulled 2 units...haha take that!!

I totally forget to get a screenshot of his turn b/c I got blasted by MW and was kind of shocked to be honest

Had to focus on what I do for my turn

My turn

After planning I decide the plan will be YOLO!!!!!

I put catechism of fire on aggressors

I put reroll hit aura on melta dreads

I move in super aggressive to middle

Wolf lord turbo boosts to enter the middle fight from the left flank and hammer the spyders

Aggressors and BC1 and BC2 push into the middle

Melta dreads walk into the open and line up shots to middle as well...I kill 1 spyder

My rune priest runs for his life with 1 wound remaining and tries to get out of range from a follow up hit by hiding near the whirlwind

In the middle I am just barely able to kill all the scarabs with shooting (whirlwind mopped up the last few with perfect amount of kills) and clear space for charges into his important stuff

I am also able to put 3 wounds on each CTAN with shooting to weaken them for later turns

-Count deceiver as character for glory kills

-Count nightbringer as monster for glory kills

Good news is I make ALL my charges

Bad news is I ended up charging into too many combats so no matter what he gets to interupt and hurt me

Left flank I put both WG into his wraiths

Middle I put wolf lord into far left CTAN (deceiver) and spyders...aggressors and BC1 into spyders...BC2 into his psychomancer (guy with ignore LOS MWs)

I have to pick carefully who goes first

My wolf lord had to multi charge his deceiver to stop a HI so i start there and move away from deceiver to deny him an activation (nasty trick that denies HI and avoids combat damage)

Wolf lord kills 1 spyder only (rolled 1-2-2 for wound rolls)

Well crap...hope aggressors can pull it off

He interupts and kills 2/5 WG-Orange with wraiths activation

The remaining WG units manage to kill all wraiths in return then pile into scarab and tank the hits with 2+

BC1 are in YOLO mode and put 1 more wound on nightbringer before dying (I move blocked his CTAN to stop a HI into aggressors so this damage is just like winning a mini lotto)

BC2 kills his psychomancer and he fails his revival roll at the end of the turn (lucky me!!!)

His last remaining spyder only kills 1 aggressor after transhuman (his character put FIGHT LAST on my aggressors)

Remaining 3 aggressors punch the last spyder and earn the glory kill for wiping out the spyder unit

That was a BRUTAL turn 1 but I punched back hard enough to threaten his CTANs next round

I also saved 2 CP for my captain to fight on death too if things work out well

Turn 2

Command phase 5++ on golden guy

CTAN MW powers kill wolf lord (doh!) and a single aggressor

Good news is he has 0 CP remaining

Other good news is he had to focus on my wolf lord so much that the rest of my army is still in play

His sentinels also arrive and kill 1 melta dread and put 4/8 on the other

I HI both WG into his nearby scarab but he pulls casualties and is able to get out of combat from yellow squad

WG kill 2 bases and lose 2/3 in return (rolled 4 1's from 9 wounds)

He kills aggressors but 2/5 BC survive and pass morale.

Obsec means I hold the middle and deny him direct assault. Good job BCs!

My turn

YOLO HARDER!!!

Without my wolf lord i need luck to kill his CTANs

The good news is they are BOTH damaged enough that I might pull it off (6/9 and 7/9)

I use the stratagem to put my 4 WG in assault doctrine and send them into the middle

The hope is I can weaken both CTAN and the WG mop up

BCs in middle fall back so I can shoot

Last surviving WG falls back from scarabs so they can be shot

The rune priest is now safe from LOS ignoring MW and advances back into the fight. He lines up a smite on the CTAN with 7 wounds. If I succeed I can kill both this turn with shooting/melee (3 max damage a round)

Super smite gives me 3 damage. Oh ya!!!

Shooting works too...my random eliminator las fusil puts 3 wounds on his nightbringer even though he tries to CP reroll. This is HUGE b/c now my MM dread can fire at the deceiver (nobody else had LOS). It works and I have managed to put 3 wounds on both CTAN dropping them to 2/9 and 1/9 at the end of the shooting phase

WG multi charge both CTAN

I then make an 8" charge with my melta dread and the howls of elation begin

The dread EASILY kills the deceiver CTAN

CTAN blows up and kills 2 WG and the other CTAN

That CTAN also blows up

When the carnage is over I own midfield and his MW monsters are GONE on turn 2.

Meanwhile my plasma dread and BC3 and elminators wipe his scarabs on objective 2 in melee.

It is now a fight of my scattered survivors v his tomb sentinels

Bad news is I scored 0 engage this turn

I kill 1 sentinel with shooting and charge from chaplain/BC3

Last surviving WG gets a low advance roll but pushes up to the wall preparing to score engage and maybe attack next turn

He teleports his character and immortals to my DZ

Sentinel shoots and kills 4/5 BC3 in the middle with his sentinel

He charges BC3 and Chaplain but the chaplain manages to survive with transhuman and his invulnerable...I take 4 damage but live but don't do any damage in return

I kill his sentinel with shooting and charge from the Plasma dread

Move block with whirlwind in my DZ and charge in to tie up his immortals

Last surviving WG takes his DZ and gets engage points scoring again

He charges chaplain and rune priest in middle and I HI with dread for 1 CP

He forgot I have armor of russ...I offer a different move but he says he has to go in or game is lost.

I pop wulfen stone for my plasma dread and all units swing first but am unable to wipe his scarabs and he spends a CP to auto explode and kill my rune priest to wipe out more WWS points

My turn

We look at the board and figure out what I need to score

I just need a HOLD MORE and 3 points from engage to pull out the win

Plasma dread kills last remaining scarab base to secure hold more and Chaplain drives over to the 4th corner for engage all scoring

The new scoring at the bottom of turn 5 decided this game

I like the change

Was not ready for his CTAN MW barrage but I managed to come out with the win

Next time I shall be better prepared

The las fusil eliminators were surprisingly effective for me. Flat 3 damage and BS2 had them sniping all game long

I also found the extra 2 CP from NOT reserving my BCs to be helpful

WWS probably looks like a mistake but I needed it to draw him into my melee threat range. I wanted him in close and figured I could pull it out.

Glory kills was AWESOME as a secondary against his force. Super easy to max it out at 15 between the monsters and characters I was killing.

This puts me at 1-1 now...3 more rounds to go!!

Nice win, comebacks like that one where you overcome a brutal early stretch are always to nice to have.

 

So far I've had 1 game where the new rules gave my opponent a chance to win and even though I lost, I like that whoever goes second gets to score primary objectives at the end of thier last turn. Before the rule change I would have won a close game without a ton of effort during my last turn.

He has a ton of LOS ignoring guns which will suck for my play style

Pushes drones and vehicles for engage points and prevents me from doing a quick banner in middle

Broadside1 wipes out forward eliminators

Broadside2 kills 3/5 WG and lose 1 to morale (+1 to hit b/c "fly" and he had reroll all wounds buff...I rolled 6 2's and a 1 out of 14 wound rolls)

YOLO...my new motto is YOLO

The wolf lord is on a kamikaze charge to the Tau backline

I hope to draw fire and force his reserves to drop near me instead of my vulnerable backlines

The main weapon I have this game is my melta dreads coming from reserve...need to set up an opportunity for them to come in and do damage


The move I am unsure of is my aggressors...I keep them back as a counter attack force


Whirlwind kills 1/5 firewarriors on his backline (if I can wipe them he has to shift his firepower)

Plasma dread and aggressors kill piranha...2 drones pop out


WG kills drone and hugs wall

Wolf lord kills devilfish and hugs drones that pop out

BCs kill drones that popped out of his piranha and consolidate into his firewarriors...melee slingshot has them halfway across the table already and threatening his DZ objective

He brings in his super crisis suits in his DZ and aims at the WG

His mini crisis comes at my DZ


He blasts my wolf lord apart with LOS ignoring missiles

BCs have 5 markerlights placed on them then die to missiles

Ghostkeel kills last surviving WG in middle

More LOS ignoring missiles put 3 wounds on rear BCs

41 AP1 shots hit WG and I fail 17...all dead

13 AP1 hit eliminators and I fail 10...all dead

Chaplain gets +2 to charge off and moves to safety while providing a bubble

Aggressors move left to line up a charge at his piranha they wipe out 5 marker drones then make a LONG charge

They kill the piranha then hug the wall

BCs on left move left to clear DZ threat of crisis suits


I bring melta dread directly into combat in my DZ

BCs clear the drones so the dread can do his thing

He fails horribly and only kills 1 (he literally rolled 1s for hitting and 1s/2s with rerolls to wound)

This screws me horribly...I had arranged the BCs to pile into his firewarriors after the unit died but now I am stuck strung out

This also puts objective 1 at risk now b/c he can contest the whirlwind and remove a banner

I move rune priest to snipe his last firewarrior to free up BCs for more charging

I push aggressors and last BC unit mid field to try and kill his crisis suits while they are vulnerable


I kill 4/5 FW with whirlwind and he fails morale so eliminate his scramble secondary

I kill 4/5 drones in middle

I kill 1 broadside in rear with melta


I prepare to charge his crisis suits in middle and then realize I screwed up...

He has no CP so I thought I was free and easy to charge...NOPE

Tau get free overwatch and free support overwatch

If I charge and die he gets to keep firing


I spend some moments groaning and kicking myself then swap to plan B

I charge BC and chaplain into single drone on right side

Leave aggressors to die a horrible death in middle

RP charges crisis suit and kills it to save my DZ for now but he is going to get shot and pay for it...all because the melta dread failed so hard

Move to try and save as many points as possible on turn 5

BC fall back and stand on objective to prevent a hold more

Chaplain flees to try and do something turn 5

Whirlwind fires at 2 drones and fails to prevent them taking my banner down (rolled 4 2's and a 3 then 2 to wound)

My turn

I have a path to victory but need luck

If I get a charge from whirlwind and chaplain it will end in a draw

If I somehow kill his crisis suits I can win


I spend CP to give plasma dread reroll hits and CP to auto chant reroll all melee hits from chaplain


Whirlwind moves to auto charge range of his ghost keel and fires at crisis suits

I manage 6 wounds and barely kill his 2+ save crisis suit with 1 wound remaining (thanks to BCs earlier)

Next my plasma dread gets 2 overcharged hits and wounds but he rolls 6-6 to save and my hail mary play goes up in smoke

Now I need to play for the tie...

Chaplain charges through INSANE overwatch (every unit nearby fires)

I take 2 wounds and have 1 remaining

I then make the charge

I activate the wulfen stone and roll nothing but 1s 2s and 3s

I reroll all dice and get basically the same with nothing but 1s 2s and 3s

I only get 1 wound through and do NOTHING to his crisis suits


Here comes the shame...

They manage 3 hits and I roll 2-2-2 and die in melee to Tau

SW loss


His non stop LOS ignoring missiles are basically a hard counter to my playstyle

I like the sneaky close quarters game where I make usage of LOS blocking terrain and fall back when weak

He was just picking me off everywhere he wanted


Usually I can count on the survivors of a melee combat to move around behind the scenes and still be helpful...engage all fronts or stuff like that


He just kept picking them up and removing them all game

This particular army was not built for the rain of tau missiles


Really wished I had my terminators with SS in this match

WG1 has to daisy chain for obsec only gets 2 models into combat

He turns off all my rerolls

WG1 makes 4 wounds to kill 1 model

He interupts with 20 attacks on the dread but I take 2 damage only (needed 5 to wound and did poorly then I made 2 6 armor saves)

I kill 1 in return after he uses CP to make his saves


I take the point and remove his banner


Good news is he burned like 6 CP that turn


Bad news is I didn't do nearly what I wanted and need to take a counter punch

Turn 4


He smites 3 on the dread in combat (2 remain)

Spends all his CP to buff venatari and they double fire and kill WG1

Plasma dread takes 3 damage from Pallas (got 1 FNP) and 2 from custodes but will live

His achilles does 1 damage to left melta dread (got 1 FNP)

His bikes kill the left melta dread


He makes all charges and makes dread fight last with paralysis grenades


Venatari 20 attacks rerolling into WG and put 19/20 wounds on them...1 survivor for now

Shield captain only kills 2/5 BC

Trajan kills right side melta dread


I pay CP to pass morale on WG


His reroll hits/wounds combos just pounded the crap out of me...that hurt

My turn

This is it...need a good turn to decide the match

I move in aggressively for the kill

RP pushes in deep and a null zone will make quick work of all his units here b/c of the melta and dread claws I have


I null zone with 9 but he denies with 10...crap...that may be the game right there

I kill his psyker with shooting but the damage is done

I decide to focus and kill a unit rather than risking it so put everything into venatari


Wolf lord kills 3 venatari

Dread finishes the job


Good news is I wiped a dangerous unit

Bad news is I failed to kill 2 other major threats (custodes + trajan) and I have no character blocking in place besides the single dread


On the left flank I was goofing aronud and decided to see what BC and aggressors can do to his unkillable shield captain

2 wounds...total


Was funny to see play out


Sidenote...first time I have paid the price for BC headstrong

Usually don't use them to babysit and never had an enemy charge them

I lose BC-Blue to charge of the bikes (should have advanced...)

I lose a handful of BC-Red to his super captain but they pass morale and keep the banner and point active

Turn 5

He kills all my stuff on the front lines


Left flank he brings his bikes forward to kill the aggressors in melee

I was hoping that avoiding shooting would be enough but he tore them apart with reroll hit and wound

Not much to do

I fire 2 eliminators and they roll 2 1s to wound

SW loss and an ass whooping with my frontline combat units

It has been a while since I got wiped out where I tried to push


Game unfolded like I thought. Primaries didn't matter and it was a secondary fight. Problem is I failed the secondary fight


This list is teaching what I don't like and what doesn't work


It was an early version of the rune priest and is horrible...the tempestas tree + tome of malcedor is my preferred combo

I think I am done with aggressors and eliminators in future armies

I also didn't have much luck with the dreads

I probably should have brought them all in on the same flank in this game


I also did a poor job with my WWS choices. I could have picked my RP and chaplain and hidden them while still sending a fighting force in


Things to consider going forward I guess


I am now 1-3 and will end with a losing record in this GT


I can still reach 2-3 so I will keep on keeping on

Round 5 is a forfeit victory.

 

I see many other players dropping or forfeiting as well.

 

This seems more common with digital GTs

 

No point in playing if not near the top...plenty of other GTs are about to launch so everyone is moving on.

 

I finish 2-3 and will update with my final ranking after tournament concludes
