New Astartes faction (Legion of the Damned)

 

 

With the Cicatrix Maledictum affecting the 40K universe, would there be room for a new Astartes faction to enter the fray?

 

I am talking about ghost or spirit entities like the Legion of the Damned.

 

As the Cicatrix Maledictum make it easier for demons to appear, perhaps angry spirit of dead loyalist Astartes might also return to fight.

After all this is not an entirely unheard of event.

We have the Legion of the Damned as an example.

 

Perhaps the Cicatrix Maledictum has an unexpected boon to give the imperium.

Heroes of lost past, returned to fight yet again, however brief it might be, to seek their just revenge.

 

Something that was not possible before the time of the Cicatrix Maledictum.

 

And from a collection perspective, how cool would it be to field dead heroes from the Istvaan III Atrocity.

Saul Tarvitz leading a force of spirits in MKIV power armour anyone?

Sigismund haunting for a rematch with Abaddon?

Or Erasmus Tycho still craving more Ork blood spilled even in death?

 

Now there are of course some concerns about such a thing.

If anyone can return as a ghost or spirit would deaths in 40K ever have any consequence?

I think so, if this phenomenon is tied with Cicatrix Maledictum, if it goes away, they go way.

And if if they are just a small aspect of the Astartes they once where, then is not return of the character, but just of one of their motives.

Nor would the be a reliable reinforcement, Sigismund might come to help the Black Templars if they are fighting the Black legion, but no if they are being eaten by Tyranids.

 

And do we really need another Astartes faction?

I do not see it as a new faction, just the return of the Legion of the Damned.

But I do not see a reason why we could not make use of the rules to make other themed armies that would just be a Legion of the Damned in another paid job and perhaps with a old special character or 2.

 

But what do you think.

Is the lore reason to thin?

Do we have to many Astartes faction?

I think we've got enough loyalist SM factions frankly. Let the dead heroes of the last ten thousand years stay in the past where they belong

Ive joked about Primaris LOTD before, a unit of them would be cool or even just new upsized LOTD but they seem to have moved them to legends and the marine codex is bloated as is so cant see it happening. Would be happy for even their rules to come back in the Talons of the Emperor codex

 

Plus theres so many other factions deserving of attention

Id love a pure LotD force, but that might just be the nostalgic 1st/2nd ed player in me missing what we used to have. Realistically I think were sorted for marines for a long time to come.. 

 

I would like to see Vet Sgt Centurius again though, just not Primaris sized... Alas thats not gonna happen so Ill just crawl back under my rock and dream of days gone by...

I’m a marine player and even I don’t want to see any more marines. Legion of the dammed are cool but a huge part of their thing is their mystique and the fact they only show up in the most dire situations to miraculously intervene and save the day. Making them a full faction or even a basic one would mean they’d be showing up everywhere and would lose the mystique as they’d have to explained in more detail. One of the things I really disliked about the start of 8th edition was that every battle including a bar fight between two conscripts had a Primarch in it. We’d end up with a similar situation with the LotD showing up everywhere.

 

If they do introduce another faction via the maledictum I’d much prefer something totally new. But what I’d really prefer is the existing factions to all be brought up to date before any of that.

As someone who never plays loyalist marines, I actually think a Legion of the Damned army would be really interesting. I don't necessarily think they would need to introduce named characters, maybe just a generic legion of the damned captain. 

 

That said though, there are other armies that need to be addressed first.

A agree that that are many other factions that need some love first.

An I don't think that Legion of the Damned army would need more than an article in White Dwarf, with a few special rules, like the the Emperor’s Spears.

And doing name character should be Legion of the Damned related like Sergeant Centurius. 

The Legion of the Damned captain could easily be represented by another model like Saul Tarvitz with a helmet if you wanted to do another ghost army.

I could perhaps see them as a white dwarf supplement, or even a full blown supplement, but not for another two years at least.

 

Honestly, I don't get a nostalgia hit with them and always thought they were a fairly goofy concept (though with awesome models) so I'd actually be happier if they didn't come back

As a Marine player for the last 20 years: Please no.

I actually prefer having the LotD as a fluff faction who appear randomly. It makes them more interesting and creates an air of mysticism and uncertainty. Additionally, we've already seen what happens to tiny factions when GW tries to shoe-horn them in to the game with things like Sisters of Silence.

Quite honestly, I would really like GW to not touch Marines again (other than normal balance updates/FAQs) for at least 12 months. Now that the DA are out, lets see some focus on improving factions who have fallen by the wayside. Give us 12 solid months of Xenos/Chaos/Non-Space Marine Imperium.

The Legion of the Damned wouldn't be a "new" faction, though. They're still available for use via the Warhammer Legends, after all. If GW were to reintroduce them, it would just be bringing them back (probably with some changes) after a hiatus of a few years.
