theprophetofwar
Well, after finally playing some straight matched play 9th edition at 2k... Buddy and I played our classic match up of orks vs wolves. He basically ran Speed Freaks: lots of bikes, buggies and bashers with some sneaky gits outflanking. I used a big ol pile of blood claws in a land raider backed up by a rhino and A.C. Razor full of grey hunters. A 6 body squad of hero-hammer terminators (chain-fists, hammers, combi meltas and shields) with Logan, Arjac and Njal. And some support fire with a full squad of long fangs decked out with 2 las, 2 missiles, a heavy bolter cherub and a terminator with shield and Master crafter Assault cannon. You can probably guess this was all more for fun curiosity than anything. I got crushed on points even though I destroyed whatever my squads got close to. He just swarmed the board with all those orks while our warlords and their retinue slaughtered each other around the middle objective. Now, granted my list didn't have much real focus, but we were both consistently underestimating what the wolves were capable of in combat. It felt like over kill each time I had the charge, but I just didn't have the bodies to weather all the return fire and charges, and certainly couldn't move him off the objectives. All stars were Njal consistently granting defensive buffs and debuffs, the blood claws and their land raider swamped his Mecha-nobs and some bikes The land raider did a lot of damage and survived the battle. I can't remember the last time I've ever had that tank survive... My terminators and HQs just got pinged by weight of dice. Grey hunters and their transports did practically nothing. Which, to be fair, is what the internet told me to expect. Best moment of the game though: one of his buggies has a Ram rule. On the last turn, it happened to have an open line charge, and ran over my last terminator (we impaled him on the front spikes like mad max), it could then charge again...and managed to roll hot and rammed into Njal and killing him too. Funniest moment in many games. I love fighting orks... I didn't plan on rambling quite so much, but please see the new list idea posted here as I shuffle my collection around. theprophetofwar
After getting my fix of getting to use my old mini marines, I'm ready to dust off the thunder wolves and finish figuring out my primaris troops. This is pretty much me just putting ideas into writing, and fishing for advice on the details of warlord traits, relics, and body counts. I've played my Xenos armies in crusade, but I'm ready to focus back on my favorite, Space Vikings. Basic bones I want to aim for: -Thunder wolf lord chapter master, hammer, combi-melta. Probably angel artifice. -Wolf priest, Jump pack. Hate for charges, looking at Hunter Saga and Wulfen Stone. -Thunder wolf cavalry: Hammer/shield, rest with Claws and shields. 3 min, could go to 5. 2 squads might be best? - a few cyber wolves to hide out of los for objectives, filling points, and other such jobs. -Full squad of long fangs with wgtda. Ragnar, rune priest. The big changes for me is that I'm shifting away from tanks of grey hunters, to wanting Ragnar, and squads of Phobos troops. I have used Primaris in my deathwatch but not the wolves yet. I have 10 infiltrators, 10 Incursors, and 5 Intercessors all painted up as wolves, but each 5 man modeled so they could easily be either type. Pretty set on these numbers but not sure about squad sizes, upgrades etc. Also considering Blade guard vets. I've been reading others ideas and results, but if anyone has some specific advice for what I'm working on, I'd appreciate it.
