I guess it depends on what else is in your army as to what tactical roles you need the Storm speeder to fill. Given that Marines are already packing enough boltguns to thin most hordes, the Hammerstrike is a good choice for filling your anti-tank role.

Having said that, the Thunderstrike is BS2+ which is quite handy. I guess the correct answer is to magnetise.

Yea that’s how I feel about my gladiators. Not sure I will pull the trigger on a storm speeder.

I would like to think it fits in but even if it was a good points value, it’s just UM are so infantry-centric it’s hard to see it working.

So where does a landspeeder fit?

My Typical 9th Build generally has the following elements

Anti infantry/ Anti Elite

10 BR intercessors (in tactical with rapid fire strat)

5 Aggressors

Onslaught Redemptor

Anti Tank

2 x 3 Eradicators

Redepmptor with Plasma

Plasma Inceptors

Melee

2 x 3 BG Vets

The 5 Aggressors

The Dreads

Fast Objective Grabbers

ATVs or Outriders.

I bring a Chief Librarian or Tiggy for the added -1 sometimes which goes on eradicators if in the castle or the intercessors.

All these units are core and can be buffed from the HQs

Captain with CM re rolls

Chaplain with his buffs and auras.

Apothecary for his revives and heals.

So can a land speeder fulfill a role better? Probably not and with less efficiency. I would have to change my build to be more mobile and harass.

Couple of Impulsors filled with Bladeguard

A couple of gladiators

Couple of Land Speeders

2 Redepmptors

2 Atvs

3 outriders

Plas Inceptors

10 Intercessors,

2 x 5 man assault troops

Probably wouldnt take a captain

maybe a Techmarine for heals and +1 to ht for a tank, a Libby for fortress and MOH,

It would bleed bring them down, but give flexability of the FB and shoot with high toughness.

Im not sold on them, cool models and definately see them in fun lists trying out a fluffy flavour. Competitive? Unsure.

Now that "Bring them down" has been tweaked to reduce the VPs, I don't see that as being such a hindrance. Most people will be looking to score at least 10 VPs on a secondary, otherwise they would just take something easy like "Deploy Scramblers". Dreads and Speeders are now only worth 1VP each. Redemptors and Stormspeeders are worth 2VPs. I think you can afford to take a handful of them without making yourself unduly vulnerable to BTD.

I agree on Bring them down.... the only speeder I'm looking at right now is the Thunderstike. Not sure about using it for UM though. Scars have a bit more tricks with speeders. Still it's the 'fly' component that has me even looking at this.

I don't think the storm speeders are competitive, but unless your playing in hardcore meta I don't they are some insurmountable handicap either. Attack bikes, and plasmaceptors are better fast attack choices clearly but if you like the models give them a try. I went with a couple of hammer strikes and I don't regret it, I play space wolves and it nots like we have stratagem support for speeders either.

Actually the stormspeeders only give up 1 VP now, bring it down has always had 10 wounds in the lowest category which makes sense when most DG players saw bloat drones losing a wound as a buff (they don't degrade anymore). That said the second list Xommul posted would bleed bring it down points cause it is vehicle heavy (they could max it), but Xommul's list would also be super mobile and there wouldn't be another clear secondary to choose against it.

I think the new speeders have some potential especially if you deep strike them. I’d be most interested in a Dakka jet.

can you deep strike them? I agree but would be awesome. I used my Thunderstrike to very mediocre results. I put it on anti vehicle duty and it was very blah. It disappeared as soon as the opponent sneezed on it. It is nice to BS 2 though.
