Since I have pretty limited experience with doing actual gaming, especially now during the pandemic, I'd like to ask you about your thoughts on Storm Shields for Captains and Captains in Terminator Armour - are they worth it? In earlier editions, the 3++ vs. 4++ save was definitely a big boost. Now, however, with the changes to the rule, I'm not so sure. The rule allowing to ignore 1 point of armour penetration seems cool, but I'm not sure it makes a huge difference, but my deliberations are purely academic since I don't have a good feel of what's good in the game.

Still worth it if you expect mass attacks etc. TDA+SS gives you a 1+ save, and a 2+ against anything AP-1, which is a 100% increase over a 2+ save.

Captains in power armour I tend to combine the SS with artificer, indomitus or Angel Artifice for that 1+ save.

There is a lot of AP-1 in the meta these days. Massed chainsword attacks and the risk of getting caught in the open if your bodyguard get killed. Personally I would take a Storm Shield unless I wanted to take a specific shooting weapon for some reason. Mind you, I play Blood Angels and Space Wolves so my characters tend to lead from the front. If I were playing a more shooty Chapter or planned to buff something like a big squad of Hellbasters, I might feel less need for the Shield.

Late to the party but yes always go add a Storm Shield to a Captain with a 2+ save. A 1+ save is very powerful, to help defend against AP-1 weapons.

Also, when AP-2 hits and you still have a 3+ save you'll be happy.

There are plenty of ways of building a very difficult to kill Captain with Storm Shields. Several Chapters can apply their tricks.

Even Ultramarines can get a Captain with Iron Resolve for 6+ ignore wounds and an additional wound, Storm Shield for 1+ save Tarentian Cloak for D3 wounds healed per turn.

While the 1+ save is worth it, if you captain doesn't have a native 2+, I don't think the 2+ armor is worth giving up something like a combi-melta, or for BA an inferno pistol as is my favorite. Having a D6 damage shot that hits on 2's on a mobile platform is great for assassinating characters or putting wounds onto big targets before the assault phase.

I use a similar build for my Iron Captain: TDA, SS, Automedicae Bionics, All Flesh is Weakness. 1+/4++/5+FNP (potentially a 4+ with strat), healing d3 each turn. Edited by Iron Father Ferrum
