I am looking for a 30" x 44" gaming mat for smallish games of 40K. My problem is not that I cannot find any but rather there are too many choices.

Does anyone have any recommendations for mats that are particularly good, bad or cheap? Ideally a double-sided one with green on one side and earthy brown on the other would be perfect but that might be getting a bit specific.

I've got a 6x4 mat from Frontline Gaming. Nice print, vibrant colours, good quality material, pleasing thickness, came with a carry bag and no brand watermark.

On the downsides - a 6x4 is a heavy, bulky item if storage is limited. A 30" x 44" is lot shorter but still something to consider. Also, when printing an image this large, the detail isn't super sharp, but that's something common to every game mat I've seen in person - Deep Cut, FLG and UrbanMats among them.

Note, I'd just unrolled the mat here after it arrived in the post so it's still a bit wrinkly.

I have a few from P Works Wargames (https://www.pworkwargames.com/en/), they're good quality. I think there are other companies that are slightly cheaper, but I preferred their designs, and they had a range of Kill Team sized mats in themes I wanted.

I love my mate from Gamemat.eu. I saw another club members and wanted one, and it keeps surprising me with how clever it is. The halfway points are actually indicated with the tiles, 12" DZ's are indicated, and it looks really good with GW terrain on.

This one's double sided, which looks good also. This one is purely 40k, but they do have plainer grass, desert or snow ones for fantasy. I'm eyeing up their 4x4 town one for Mordheim. In a perfect world, there would be a double sided medieval town and industrial one for Mordheim/Necromunda.

Deep Cut Studios I feel are the benchmark to measure up most other companies. They have great mats.

Checking these out, a neoprene 6x4 single sided mat + bag is Edited by Xenith

I have two 6x4 from FLG and one from gamemat.eu. While the FLG ones are high quality, I've had nothing but problems ordering from them and truly terrible interactions with their customer service. I know people who haven't had issues with them, but I am not buying from them again. Gamemat.eu on the other hand has been excellent every time and the mat is just as good.

You can make your own at any size with an old piece of fabric the size you want, gesso (https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/acrylic-paint/white-acrylic-gesso---500ml/5052089006164.html will do a 6x4 with a little left over), and paints of your choice, generally the cheaper craft store ones.

Xenith why do you play with so little terrain!

I was impressed that at least the terrain is painted. Kudos to Xenith!

@Emicus - new club and a lack of focus on terrain from myself, really - the amount is growing steadily, including hand made and bought stuff. We can always use more though!

FLG mats are all that people use around me (Michigan US). I've never had an issue with the company, had great service and mats are top quality. Got 3 6x4 mats with them. Edited by Putrid Choir

Can you still roll the fabric after the gesso and paint?
