Hey everyone. I haven't posted in ages or really had a desire to play 40k for quite some time.

I just decided to check in if there were any recent updates to DA. To my surprise, I've noticed unrepentant heretics are all crying in unison about DEATH WING being OP and needing a nerf?

....Am I missing something?

I don't play 40k very often but the only army I ever (and will ever) own is Dark Angels, especially Death Wing Terminators.

Can you guys please fill me in on the changes to unit stats and tactics, possibly even some list building ideas, etc.

So the big change in 9E is that we have been rebased onto the Spare Marine Codex as a supplement, alongside Deathwatch, Blood Angels and Space Wolves. That means the topic of successor chapters had to get addressed, and a few other things.

Deathwing now can only be wounded on rolls of 4+, so S5+ weaponry doesn't afford any bonuses to wound, making them much tougher. There's a few other relics and abilities that can be stacked with that to make them extremely durable. On top of that, all non-Primaris SM were bumped up to 2W, making Terminators now have 3W.

Added to this, if you take a Deathwing-only Vanguard detachment, then we now have Terminators with Objective Secured, like a troop choice would have. This is similar to rules we had in previous editions, so it's really something they added back in a way.

The big reason a ton of heretics are crying though is not that it's excessively powerful, that's sort of just their Casus Belli. I think it's as simple as that we have toys that they don't have an equivalent for and it's more fun. So while we're good in any way, even if nerfed some, the complaints won't cease. A lot of people expected that they would water down DA/BA/SW when we were put on Codex: Space Marines, and that spectacularly was turned on its head with some very cool stuff.

So they can call for 'nerfing' and get away with it, but if they straightforward say what they really mean, which is that they want to take away all of the interesting toys out of pettiness, then obviously nobody humors them. People don't like it when you both have more fun and are strong, since it makes their stuff feel inadequate, so while both are those are true in any capacity, the heresy won't cease.

thank you for this! I don't own any Primaris and won't be buying new models any time soon. Just can't justify putting more money into the hobby when the force doesn't get enough use!

That said, I am now looking forward to busting out DW! I'm really thrilled about the obj sec abilities that brings back 6th edition style.

It seems like finally DeathWing is able to be played more like they're supposed to!

Any other comments on suggestions are appreciated.

if YOU have a land raider excelsior is now got deathwing keyword for a small points cost, as do all dreadnaughts, or other terminator transports and repulsors/ executioners

You can also give deathwing to primaris lieutenants and primaris company masters who otherwise wouldnt get it for a cost.

we have two relic tables one for nbormal armies the other for a crusading army, crusading armies take persistent battle damage between matches as welkl as bonuses and buffs and they can take special relics including a storm shield (finally!) and the 6th edition banners of a thousand gimmicks (fortitude, retribution and vengenace)

sammael has lost his land speeder option totally

they totally reworked our unique magic table and made it good

a bunch of new units id be here forever discussing so ill just give a brief blurb

eradicator: multimelta devestators cranked to 11, durable as a mountain too

bladeguard: veteran primaris marines with storm shields and power swords

assault intercessors: primaris assault marines (troops choice!!)

hammerfall bunker (its like a whirlwind but worse in every way You can imagine dont buy one)

invader atv: attack bike with double the health and a better stock bolter sidecar also is ATV

hammerstrike speeder: a heavily armed land speeder with no added survivability really sort of land speeder vengenace 0.5 feels like a downgrade to me

firestrike servo turret: a non forgeworld tarantula sentry

primaris techmarine: somehow better then normal techmarine

heavy intercessors: a troops choice built like a volkswagen and armed with bolter 3.0 not sure if good though kinda expensive

good units you will probably want:

apothecary of some kind is basically an auto take ravenwing is ideal but others suffice

your gonna want at least 1 attack bike

terminators of any and all shapes and sizes are great, keep in mind that cataphract terminators and tartaros now share a datasheet but arent any better or worse then normal terminators. may i recommend some anyway to at least try them out

inceptors with plasmas

if you ever wanted to use ezekiel now is probably the time

the stalker is also lowkey kinda good now if YOU wanna take one not amazing but actually useful

Edited: chat speak. Here in BnC chat speak is frowned upon. Punctuation and proper spelling also go a long way in making posts legible for everyone.

We get by better than some chapters without using Primaris since a lot of the Dark Angels’ key units are Ravenwing and Deathwing. A few Tactical Squads to hold the line are fine when supplemented with Terminators and bikes. Character-wise an Interrogator-Chaplain has the same stats as a Primaris Chaplain but gets a few added bonuses and can take a Jump Pack. Ravenwing Apothecaries are unparalleled. Firstborn Librarians get all the same spells as Primaris ones. A Firstborn Captain (Master) on Bike can take some outstanding wargear and be built wonderfully from the Black Knights kit with maybe a few bits from the firstborn upgrade sprue.
