So got a couple of new players, and some old ones, to start a slow grow Campaign to raise some armies in my area. I wanted to start a new army and decided in Black Legion as I had most of an army on sprue from shadowspear and vengeance warband boxes. Wanted to post my progress and make sure I don't make any dire mistakes building an army.

1st battle is 1 HQ (Warlord) and 1-3 Troops, and 500 pt limit, 3CP. -April 15th

+ HQ +

Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour [6 PL, 100pts]: 2. Indomitable, Combi-bolter, No Chaos Mark, Power sword, Spineshiver Blade, Warlord

+ Troops +

Chaos Space Marines 1: Icon of Vengeance, No Chaos Mark

. Aspiring Champion: Combi-bolter, Power axe

. 3x Marine w/ boltgun: 3x Bolt pistol, 3x Boltgun, 3x Frag & Krak grenades

. Marine w/ heavy weapon: Reaper chaincannon

Chaos Space Marines 2: Icon of Vengeance, No Chaos Mark

. Aspiring Champion: Plasma pistol, Power axe

. 7x Marine w/ boltgun: 7x Bolt pistol, 7x Boltgun, 7x Frag & Krak grenades

. 2x Marine w/ special weapon: Plasma gun

Chaos Space Marines 3: No Chaos Mark

. Aspiring Champion: Bolt pistol, Plasma pistol, Chain Axe

. 4x Marine w/ chainsword: 4x Astartes chainsword, 4x Bolt pistol, 4x Frag & Krak grenades

2nd battle will include fast attack option, and additional 250 pts (750 pts)

????

3rd battle will include elite option, and additional 250 pts (1,000 pts)

I guess it also depends on the flavour you want to go with. :happy.:

Cultists became hugely popular thanks to being in a core game and their rules were pretty good for a while. Personally I have tried to keep more chaos marines in my chaos marines army but again that’s just preference! Cultists are handy to have and meeeeggggaaaaa cheap to boot!

2nd and 3rd games choices were selected based on die role. not sure what to do about fast attack, as i wanted to use newer models

i just like the idea of having cultists as space marines were rare and CSM rarer than so. so having cultists/traitor guard being a chunk of the force felt neat.

So need some advice on fast attack choice. Was thinking of 5x raptors or warp talons. I feel like the raptors are more flexible, especially if I could fit them with plasma pistols, but still preferring melee. Warp talons are entirely about melee and may perform better in that situation.

I tweaked the army slightly to make the weapon loadouts more uniform. The plasma squad will benefit from having a combi plasma in there, and the assault squad will benefit from a power weapon. You can also stick a flamer in there so they can advance and still shoot etc.

Nice start to a warband, another 250pts and Fast attack might get you 5 raptors and a sorcerer? Or is a second HQ not allowed yet? I rarely see warp talons used, but the changes to lightning claws has only benefitted them. Melta/melta/plasma pistol+ claw raptor unit might also be good. Chaos terms are also good, and match the lord.

2nd HQ is at 1k points i think, and will be a master of possession or a sorcerer. I am thinking raptor might be my choice as SoH/BL was about being diverse in their options and they are more diverse than warp talons.

I wanted to go multi-melta, but none come from either Start collecting or the standard CSM box.

Do you mean many-meltas, or an actual multi melta? I'm pretty sure the new CSM box comes with a melta, while CSM cannot have multimeltas on infantry. Between the CSM and Raptors box, you'll have 2 meltas, enough for the unit.

I meant combi-plasma, but I am an idiot.

Yea, it's a useful bit that marines get in abundance, yet they deem chaos unworthy to get any. Thankfully it means theyre not too hard to get or convert - 10,000 years in the EoT would make most marines adept at bodging stuff, so converted ones won;t look out of place.

I have 10 Warp Talons in my collection with 10 Raptors "on the bench". Personally I would go Warp Talons. Yes they maybe slightly more expensive points wise but they tear through most light units in combat.

Raptors though are good counter assault units and great if buffed with a lord with claws etc. I cant think though of many things Raptors can do that a marine squad in a rhino cant do better to be honest.

From a modelling point of view both are fun. :)

So I haven't assembled them yet, but pretty sure I am going raptors. From what I read SoH valued tactical flexibility in their army, and having a chainsword+plasma pistol is more flexible than only lightning claws.

So now I move on to terminators, or bringers of despair specifically. Now I can find every little info about these guys. Its mostly "the work alongside abaddon". So I was thinking like mini-abaddons with 4x lightning claw&combi bolter, and the aspiring champions with power sword & combi bolter.
