Hello folks,

Im trying to knock together a new  5-10 man WG Terminator squad which is a bit more well balanced for my Draugrbjorn. Might also act as a bodyguard for Haakon the Red (my counts as Logan Grimnar).

I currently have in my normal wolves a 6 man squad - 3 wolfclaws and 3 th&ss - very close combat but does some tasty damage if they get in.

Problem is the 'if'. FOr the bears i want a squad that is more jack of all trades.

Im therefore after a general well rounded squad balancing a bit of everything but not being too shy on the firepower front either.

I will also be building these from the Chaos terminator box (plus bits) so combi weapons are good.

Just wondering what the general thoughts are on terminators these days (balancing fluff and effectiveness).

Please also note i do tend to play more in the spirit of the army and the universe lore rather than best in slot. So lots of blood claws, some Grey hunters, fewer longfangs and wolfguard etc.

Anyways, some advice would be most welcome :)

Cheers,

GM

This has been my hardest decision in 9th to be honest.

After psychic awakening I was 1000% committed to a 10 man combo plasma terminator squad that never exploded and always hit on 2s.

The rule changes in 9th killed that and I have been experimenting since then.

I have had success with what I call barebones

5 SB/SS...anti horde duty and can teleport if the match-up calls for it. I give this a C rating. There are times the unit has no job in a match and they become a 165 point objective holder. I prefer investing a few more points so they are always dangerous

The upgrade is adding a CML.

This gives 32 shots v hordes. I was easily deleting 30 boy ork mobs in a game earlier this week with terminators and supporting fire or a jaws tossed in.

You can also pair this with catechism of fire and surprise an opponent. You don't need recitation of focus to hit on 2s bc terminators have a separate stratagem called fury of the first for that.

I have actually gone dakka dakka and killed a redemptor before because the krak missiles also got through.

I give that unit a B rating. Reliable and gets many jobs done.

My new test is more aggressive. I just entered 2 lists into pods with the following

3xCombi melta / SS

Combi melta / CF / CML

Pack leader combi melta / CF

5 melta shots hitting on 2 if I need it. Dakka dakka is reduced but I can still put a dent in hordes...the chainfists are a lotto ticket if I roll 6s in melee. These are successor SW with Whirlwind of rage...every 6 is 3 hits total.

TLDR

Terminators have a place but the fit with the rest of your list is very important. We can tailor the load out and get maximum benefit.

I dont think spamming them is good though bc they are expensive.

The greatest advantage of our Wolf Guard Terminators is that we can mix some storm shields into the squad without having to go pure melee. Codex Terminators have to choose between shooty or pure melee squads. Our ability to mix it up makes for very tactically flexible units and our unique access to combi-weapons is gravy.

The optimum loadout probably depends somewhat on the rest of your army but I have been impressed with TiguriusX's methodical experimentation.
