So I have run into a dilemma, I am torn between the Judiciar and the chapter champion (with blade of triumph and martial exemplar). The Judiciar has the very powerful ability to make a unit fight last but the champion will be giving me an aura of re-roll charges. Both are extremely useful but which in your opinion is better?

The Chapter Champion strikes me as the more offensive option. He helps you get the charge off which makes it more likely you will strike first.

 

The Judiciar seems more defensive. He is there to act as a spoiler if your enemy charges your lines. The Judiciar HIs in and freezes the attacking unit, hopefully allowing your units to damage or destroy it before it can attack.

 

As BBF suggests, they are not mutually exclusive. But if you are looking for just one, identify what role you want it to fulfill. Leading your attack or bolstering your defense?

The assault element of my army consists of a 5 man aggressor squad, 5 blade guard, master of sanctity. So I’m leaning towards the champion due to the fact I will have a big chunk of my army wanting to charge.

I agree. In that situation it sounds like the Champion would be my first pick (although a Judiciar would certainly be decent too).

 

A thought that has just crossed my mind is that a Judiciar doesn't really need a WLT or Relic to function effectively. This may make him cheaper to run in terms of CPs. Alternatively, he makes a great caddy for relics that do not need to be attached to a specific character.

Not to naysay the champ, burden that he can't ride in the same transport as the aggressors or Bladeguard. If that isn't an issue, then the champ can ruin one well armed enemies day. If he is upgraded to chapter champion, try to get him locked in melee with a character you really want to kill, treating the guy as a borderline assassin to remove key support characters. Failing that, he will kill almost any infantry unit that tries to fight him.

 

The Judiciar should always be going for the biggest melee threat available, and if you play it right, you should be able to do some funny stuff with him.

 

I got a Judiciar and a venerable dread in combat with a carnifex, while also snagging a unit of raveners with my other dread. Thanks to Judy the Judiciar, I didn't need to worry about interruptions from the other guy at the table. Both raveners and carnifex died that turn,and it really made my game.

Is the master of sanctity on foot, or a more mobile option? With my wolves I've found the primaris wolf priest on a bike (our chaplains) to be enough of a boost for most charges. So I'd lean towards the judicar, if it's a chaplain on foot it may be a bit tougher to leverage the ability.

 

I will say that if you have a matchup against a close combat based chapter the judicar can be really strong on defense.

If the dudes are all on foot then the Chapter Champion will boost their charging chances nicely enough which might be crucial.

 

He's also very offensive in melee which is delicious.

 

The Judiciar can help you when receiving a charge of course.

I should have elaborated more in my last post. The primaris chaplain on a bike has a bigger base, higher base move, and access to canticle of hate. So its easier to get the model in an optimal position to increase all the models chance at a charge. With the exception of a smaller base this true of jump pack chaplains too. So I like the judicar a bit more, because you dont have to invest much.

 

If the chaplain is on foot, I think you need the company champion, because its harder to position the chaplain to buff everyone.

In that case, I think you'll enjoy the defensive measures of a Judiciar and would save on the CP for the Chapter Champion.

 

Damage 3 is still amazing and you'll really enjoy what that can do, but it's understandable in your circumstances.

Maybe I'm looking at this from a BA point of view, but they all seem defensive units. One is primarily shooty, and the other is slow. Assault focussed armies will charge you, and shooty focussed armies will move away from you. With them, I'd go Judiciar to hang near the bladeguard in the middle of the table to guarantee you dont get hit first or interrupted. As you say, you have the chaplain to give a potential +2" to charges, which is better than a reroll.
