Prot
I can't believe I'm doing this... but here we go! I just completed a large trade with a friend, acquiring some old friends... the necrons. So here we go with what I am calling the Protarian Dynsasty! I hope to have more personal, extended posts on my blog Linked here: Prot's 40K Hobby Blog. So long story short, I've always enjoyed this army and did play it since inception, and skipped it for 8th edition. A friend was wanting to get rid of his, we worked out a large trade, and low and behold, I'm back to the old angry metal ones.... Let's get into this quickly because everyone likes pictures.... I decided to do my own scheme even though it is largely similar to Szarekhan which will allow me to use Szarekhan when I don't feel like playing the "Protarian Dynasty". Essentially it's a recipe based on a lot of dirty metalics with highlights and a few techniques to give that old crusty 'war of the worlds' look. The new Doomstalker was done a few times over to come to the look we have here: Here is my first New-cron! Sorry for the potato pics... here's another. I know these really are horrible pictures, but I really just wanted to get this thing rolling, but will definitely have more. These were taken from my second game with the army. I've tried my, "Protarian Dynasty" rules (Pregame move + reroll 1 to hit) and Szarekhan which isn't bad for a premade choice! Thanks for checking in.. hopefully more to come! dice4thedicegod, Captain Idaho, Mordas and 7 others 10 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370067-the-protarian-dynasty-newcrons-for-prot/ Share on other sites

Captain Coolpants
Ohh excited for more! I'm never disappointed with your paint jobs! Â Did you have to do much painting of these? Or were the base colours down from the prior owner ect? Mr4Minutes
Looking really nice. I’ve followed a few of your other project armies, mainly DeathWatch and Ultramarines, so I’m really looking forward to seeing your Necron projects progress.  Good luck and keep it up! Prot
Thanks guys. Much appreciated! Â Ohh excited for more! I'm never disappointed with your paint jobs!Did you have to do much painting of these? Or were the base colours down from the prior owner ect? Â I am painting them from scratch. The Doom Stalkers didn't have paint on them, and a lot of the models don't have paint, but are in a state of (minor) disrepair. I'll have to 'reanimate' them... so far I've been gluing together missing arms to partial weapons, or whatnot. Â You can see in the background of the pictures there is a bone coloured squad of Immortals on an objective. That's the colour he went with. Â I just wanted something very rustic, with decent contrast. I wanted to use a lot of the weathering skills I've picked up over the past 5 years and see if it will help me get through the more.. labour intensive units. Â Speaking of which... my next project for the Protarian Dynasty is a squad of 20 Warriors! It's a daunting task. They were put together already, just a few were broken. I repaired and have just started on them. They don't have paint on them at all so it will be a nice fresh start on these as well. Â Anyone who's painted 20 warriors before knows the pain I'm about to push through! I'm looking forward to it though. While I have the ambition, I hope to finish 40-60 troops. I'll sprinkle in the odd 'fun' unit in between like the Doomstalkers above. Â Speaking of.. they are such cool models but not a fan of how they've performed but I'm sticking with the rule of cool for now. Â Thanks for the kind words. Miek
Are you planning on doing the 20 warriors in one go? I like to do them ~10 at a time, but my painting scheme is quite simple. I think 20 would be a bit much for me. Â Beautiful work! dice4thedicegod
Yeah, 20 seems so much more painful than 10.  I almost burned out doing my first 20 and was almost dreading the next 10... but they seemed very easy in comparison! (Having said that, I’m still procrastinating doing another 10!) Captain Coolpants
Yeah the warrior subject is really funny to me. I've only purchased 20 warriors total (because I don't play) and I still haven't even built half of them! Daimyo-Phaeron Lenoch
Warriors are a curious troop in that you can dump 5 minutes of aggregate effort into one model (maybe 10 now that we have to actually paint the guns) or close to an hour each, depending on the complexity of the scheme. My Khansu re-arisen are green and blue, and use contrast paint, which means my usual trick of double rattlecan coat and detail can't work so easily. They're also a pain to assemble. At least the old kit could be assembly lined! (The new ones are more detailed though I grant. Wish they weren't so battle-damaged though). Prot
I agree 20 is going to cause burn out. :)  I probably will burn out, but as I write this I'm a week into my first 20. I don't intend on winning any awards with these guys but I do want them to look cool and thematic so what I've done is reserve the 'time' for cool stuff.... Gauss glows, and eyeballs, etc. But the metallics I'm still feeling out.  Right now my process is getting faster on the metals as I figure out things that just don't show up, or can be done quicker with better methods.  If I can get 40 done, I'll be happy. I intend (at least in the beginning) to have 5 Immortals in most lists to save points and time! This is so true.  I find the most of the non-characters for Necrons are like that. Which is really a good thing and partially why I've decided to revisit Necrons for the millionth time....  You can get a lot out of an assembly line approach, putting in maybe... 10 minutes per model. Then I think you hit this wall of diminishing returns! The next 5 minutes, might show up some cool weathering, perhaps some edge highlighting, and maybe even a colour tweak. But the next 10 minutes per model? This (I think) is a trap.  After so many years of doing this, I have just come to this belief that large, playable, fully painted armies are incredibly cool, more fun to play, and play against. You just don't get the rewards out of all that extra grind.  So in a nutshell my first 20 warriors may even have more time put into them than future sets will. (experimenting some steps takes some time.) But we'll see how they look. I'm also a personal believe in using the base to get more out of the model! With the Doom Stalkers I came up with a good base recipe I like for the base that keeps the more or less 'monochromatic' model a little more interesting to look at.  We'll see how they turn out though. :) MithrilForge 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370067-the-protarian-dynasty-newcrons-for-prot/#findComment-5693331 Share on other sites
Prot
So this post, in a nutshell, is a Necron Hobby Update: I know it's been a while, but to be honest I've actually painted a TON of necrons. For my painting speed (IE: Slow) I have to admit I have been just pounding through these units at a pace I've never done before. Part of it is the lack of 'skin' or blending. And where there is blending, it's mostly in the form of washes on metals, or light sourcing.... Anyway, here we are with the Lychguard: I did not get too fancy with this unit. Most of the models in this army I inherited were put together in some funky ways... I had to rip some arms off, break off heads, etc, etc. I'm happy with how they turned out although to make the squad 10 man big, I had to keep 2 unaltered Lychguard assembled by the previous owner and he used the wrong Torsos on some of the models. So 8 are nearly identical (I had to green stuff some parts) and 2 are different. I just wanted 10 sword and board, and now I have them. My intent is to have them join Szeras (such a cool new model) In a new list I'm building that will be a lot of infantry and no vehicles. Secondly, we have the Ophidian Destroyers: These models are super cool, and fun to paint. A bit finicky and definitely in danger of visiting Snap City, but I wanted to include them in my recent Assault based list I've rambled on about in the Necron forum. They are a little over pointed right now, and have no invuln, but they inherently Deep Strike which is nice. So there's an update for now. BUT I honestly lost a ton of pictures and even lost pics of the Warriors, etc. I will have to retake those. Included in the lost pics was the super fun to paint squad of Destroyers from the Indomitus box: This was just a picture from my last battle against DG. A great test for my Assault list! More pics to come. Thanks for checking it out! MithrilForge
OOH Glad i found this, I have seen & followed most, if not all of your Projects, but this was my First ever main army so very interested on your Cool & Calculated take on T800's in space  Nice paint work there by the way !!  Note- on the Ophidian Destroyers (who look great) i had the thought of using Guitar wire on them and slotting some of those torso /spine pieces onto them... i haven't got round to that yet though, it'll be a long while before i do. really looking forward to your warriors core... they are my fav part of the previous re release of them, although all the new stuff is  cheers, Mithril Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370067-the-protarian-dynasty-newcrons-for-prot/#findComment-5721969 Share on other sites

Prot
Thanks for the compliments!   Niiice. Did you do glaze layers for the blades? Or do you wet blend?  The funny thing is it's airbrushed... but it was a disaster. I had to clean it up with glazes of the paints I was using. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370067-the-protarian-dynasty-newcrons-for-prot/#findComment-5722259 Share on other sites
