For us the best place for a master crafted hammer is an Intercessor sergeant since he can reroll all hits for one CP .

Assault Intercessor Sergeant, he has a second stratagem to swing again.

I need to paint mine, but he looks beautiful.

That's a very good point. The Ultramarines can utilise Scions of Guilliman nicely to compensate characters not being around.

 

I like my Honoured Sergeant being survivable as much as possible but that is offensively very effective.

I believe he only helps the Bladeguard.

 

Speaking of which, since they're fairly survivable too, the Bladeguard Sergeant with a Neo-Volkite pistol can be boosted to D3 with the Mastercrafted upgrade.

 

Other great candidates are things like Heavy Incinerators Sergeants who can get to D3 without Overcharging and D4 with it.

An Centurian Assault Squad Sergeant can upgrade his siege drills to be 5x Str 10, AP-4, D4. Add in Born Heroes Successor trait and he’s hitting in 2s.

 

Apothecary can give them a 6++ and provide healing and res.

A Librarian can give a 5++ with Psychic Fortress, and Strike Firdt with Veil of Time.

Only for BVG. However, the Chapter Ancient can give any <Chapter> Core unit +1 to hit in melee. There's your Assault Intercessors support.

The ability is tied to the Chapter Ancient chapter command upgrade. So yes, it would apply if you upgrade your TDA Ancient. No banner grants +1 to hit. Both the Chapter Ancient and the BGA have it as their ability, irrespective of what relic banner they may carry.

 

However, if +1 hit in the fight phase banners is a burning yet unfulfilled desire in your life, then look no further than the IF relic The Banner of Staganda, which does just that for IF Core and Characters within 6".
