This morning, GW announced that Space Marines and Eldar will be coming to Aeronautica Imperialis.

While I completely understand this is the AT forum, I know that many of us will be very interested in this release, especially the Thunderhawk.

My buddy and I are already making plans for a combined AT and AI campaign...the hope and need for a new edition of Epic intensifies!

Well this is kind of nice, though also odd. FW have this slightly weird thing in AI where they try to only recreate their own models and not GW's. As a result, you have this box set containing planes that bear absolutely no relation to what people use in 40k. No Crimson Hunters, Stormravens and so on, just kind of obscure resin stuff, some of which has already been Legendsed in 40k.

This is kind of fine from our point of view. We'll get models we can stick on bases and stuff (though be warned, they are much bigger than you might expect), and actually they're more Heresy-appropriate than the "current" stuff would be. But for 40k it just looks weird to me.

Also I've actually played a couple of games of AI and it's a terrible, terrible game. Alternating activations mean that there's nothing to stop bombers from outmanoeuvring fighters, which they routinely do. What should have been a dogfighting game is instead a pure slugging match. The contents of the starter box looks like it'll include a marine force with vastly more firepower and durability than the Eldar, to create entirely one-sided battles.

Edit: I'll almost certainly get some of the marine planes and paint them up as Heresy-era Imperial Fists, out of nostalgia for my old 7th Legion army. But I've no plans of fielding them in games of AI, ever.

I think the Storm Eagle actually came out as a 40k model before the Heresy range came into being and it was added into 30k, IIRC. It came out not long after the Storm Raven it was based on, around 2010 i believe.

You could well be right. I’ve actually got one that I heavily converted. It’s odd at the moment for all the old marine stuff that can’t carry Primaris. These things are very unlikely to appear on 40K battlefields, though actually I did run a Xiphon a bit early on in 8th.

It did; it was released for the badab war stuff in early 2012. But we also know the badab war was a massive trial for 30k which released later in 2012.

It made sense to just fold all the FW stuff into the Heresy, by definition they tended to be rare and/or older bits of kit anyway, even when some stuff was just fixing the janky GW kits like the Storm Eagle was for the Storm Raven. Though ironically its apparently a nightmare to build :D

I quite liked AI, only played a couple of games with the first box though before Covid :/
