To Plunder The Stars Themselves, Episode III

Lysimachus

Recommended Posts

As the machine fires Odysseus stands his ground, holding up a single hand as the shells, like a cloud of obedient bees, slow and come to a stop, hanging frozen in space.

Free action: drop to solo mode

Free action: solo mode opposed INT test against the Vorax to gain +10 to tests against it: 9 = pass vs target 45 - vorax must make an opposed test of Odysseus gains +10 against it.

Dodge roll 87 (fail)

Reroll: 1 (pass with 5 or 6 extra DoS - all shots avoided if the vorax doesn't beat the opposed INT test, otherwise one shot gets through)

First time Odysseus has had the opportunity to put his chapter ability to work...and of course he uses it to show off.

Draak walked six foot up the wall so that he could fire Grendel without Cutlass getting in the way, he'd mag-locked Grond to his backpack whilst he worked on the door controls. Walking horizontally the wall became the floor, he turned around to face the wall where Cutlass stood and then he bent his knees and leant backwards so that he could see the Vorax Automatons.

With practised ease Draak threw a Krak at the closest Vorax, but the explosive force from the grenade failed to penetrate its armour.

Not creatures. Oilblooded things, automata. Still, no less predators for their metal minds and bodies. That much was clear in every bounding stride they took.

It was clear when they tore apart the other speeder, and sent a volley of rounds through their own. A second later the vehicle was careening around as Orphiel tore it free from the stream of firepower. A moment after that, and Svelk was answering it with the roaring blaze of the speeder's heavy bolter.

Round 2 Summary:

[x] Vorax 1:

Charge (21m) at Odysseus

Swift Attack and Preternatural Speed mean 2 Attacks on Charge.

Attack 1:

WS50 +20(Charge) = 70, Roll: 44, Hit on (44=44) Body.

Assuming failed Dodge:

Dam 1d10+14 E Pen8 Power Field, Proven(3)

4+14 = 18 - TB10 - AP3(11-Pen8) = 5 Wounds suffered.

Attack 2:

WS50 +20(Charge) = 70, Roll: 27, Hit on (32=23) Right Arm.

Dodge Used.

Dam 1d10+14 E Pen8 Power Field, Proven(3)

7+14 = 21 - TB8 - AP0(8-Pen8) = 13 Wounds suffered.

The first Automata stumbles under the hail of bolter shells and krak detonations, but rights itself and springs forward, surging through Odysseus' force dome and racing towards its source with hooked blades raised like some kind of nightmarish mechanical Mantidae. The first monomolecular edge slices down past the psyker's body, the second against an upraised arm, freeing sprays of bright crimson Astartes blood.

So that it how it would be, meekness in the face of a true threat as all but Vesalius looked to another to shield them.

The first blow he struck aside but the machine carried more blades than he as it pushed home its advantage, the air filling with witch-light and lightning as the blood from his wounded turned black and his armour began to glow with molten heat as he gripped the automatons weapon and pushed it back.

The machine did not hesitate to raise its blades once more without concept of fear or motality, and as it did Odysseus drove his own blade forward with the full weight of his psychic might.

Dodge(or parry) 28 - pass

Half action: Iron Arm: activation 29 - pass, phenomena 55 (lots of sparkling electical effects)

Half action: Attack: 24 = hit

Damage = 5 +19, Pen 7

 8 wounds inflicted?

Free action force weapon: 35 = pass, phenomena 44 (no effect)

-target is 103, so 7 degrees of success vs opposed vorax willpower  - assuming it doesn't dodge or parry

(results in d10s of added damage equal to the difference between the tests, ignoring armour and toughness)

Orphiel's manoeuvres didn't trouble Svelk's aim too much, which was impressive.  He put it down to the fact the Assaulter was used to keeping a bed on a target whilst in flight.

Excellent.

He throttled the wounded bird up and over, only one turbine functioning, but good enough.  He nosed the vehicle up, lumbering into the air with caustic smoke and paint flecks shedding from the ragged fuselage, drifting off the port side of the corridor, behind the Automaton now engaging Odysseus, and just out of reach of the deadly blades.  He ran so close as to gouge a furrow in the plasteel plating of the wall, as the ventral sensor probe scraped sparks.  The speeder continued to bank, moving from vertical, to a horizontal climb up the wall, until it was now inverted.  Golden cinders erupted from contact with the impervious surfaces, with a shriek of metal on metal, to set Orphiel's teeth on edge.

He kept the pressure on, hydraulic gauges red-lining as he approached near ballistic velocity, closing on the second Vorax in a heartbeat, hammering down the passageway in an oversized bullet, before wrenching the controls and effecting a hard pedal turn and rowelling the throttle control.

The warning sirens spiking as he pushed the broken speeder to give him everything - and it did so willingly, for the nose dipped and turned, presenting Svelk with a shot at the rear of the enemy battle droid, from above and behind, in optimum killshot position.

He kept the hovercraft to the left of the hallway, clear of fire, and twenty metres from the lumbering metal beast.

Actions:

Full Action: Full move 40-50m? Now behind and to the left (top) of the map.  And on the ceiling, inverted.

Not evasive, but Tactical Speed will allow dodge, and passenger merely at -20 to Hit as opposed to 60!

AG Test if required:

AG 53 + 20 (Speeder) = 73

D100: 63 Pass, Plus 1 DoS.

Round 2 Summary Cont:

[x] Vesalius: SAB at Vorax 1.

2 Hits (-20 for Engaged in Melee)

Vorax Dodge (Ag40+10), Roll: 45, Pass with 0DoS

1 Hit:

16 - TB12 - AP3(11-Pen8) = 1 Wound suffered.

[x] Odysseus: Activate Iron Arm. Standard Attack with Force Sword.

Vorax' Dodge Used.

Dam 26 - TB12 - AV4(11-Pen7) = 10 Wounds suffered.

Opposed Wp test: Vorax Wp30, Roll: 61, 3DoF vs 7DoS, Force Sword does 10d10(!) extra Damage.

I don't think there's any need to roll that…

Vorax 1 is destroyed!

[x] Orphiel:

Drive Speeder (30+m) to behind Vorax 2.

[x] Vorax 2:

FAB at Brynjarr:

Move 7m West.

BS50 +20(FAB) +10(Short Range) = 80, Roll: 29, Hit with 5DoS = 6 Hits

Brynjarr's Dodge (Ag48), Roll: 43, Pass! 0DoS = Dodge 1 Hit, now 5 Hits.

Dam 2d10+12 Pen6 Tearing

Hit 1:

On (29=92) Left Leg

(1,6)(3) = 9 +12 = 21

21 - TB10 - AP7(9+4-Pen6) = 4 Wounds suffered.

Hit 2:

On Left Leg

(5,3)(8) = 13 +12 = 25

25 - TB10 - AP7(9+4-Pen6) = 8 Wounds suffered, now at 11 remaining.

Hit 3 (Transfer to Odysseus):

On Body

Dodge used.

(7,6)(2) = 9 +12 = 21

21 - TB10 - AP5(11-Pen6) = 6 Wounds suffered, now at 3 remaining.

Hit 4 (Transfer to Decimus):

On Left Arm

(5,4)(1) = 6 +12 = 18

18 - TB8 - AP2(8-Pen6) = 8 Wounds suffered.

Hit 5:

On Head

(2,2)(5) = 7 +12 = 19

19 - TB8 - AP2(8-Pen6) = 9 Wounds suffered, assuming failed Dodge. Successful Dodge negates Hit 5, any DoS negates Hit 4 as well!

Even as the glowing blade of Hector's Gift penetrates the body of the first Vorax, the protective field the psyker was maintaining around the team flickers and dies. The second Automata calculates an opportunity and rushes forward, ignoring the heavily damaged Speeder that somehow manages to barrel roll over its back. The insectoid machine spits out another long burst of fire from its rotary cannon, tracking the weapon back and forth along the line of Astartes.

[x] Brynjarr:

Spend 1 FP to contribute 1CP, now on 4CP total.

Krak Grenade at Vorax 2

BS48 +20(Enormous) = 68, Roll: 02, Hit!

Vorax Dodge (Ag40+10) Roll: 81, Fail!

Dam 3d10+4 Pen6

  • 4 weeks later...

As the second Vorax is bracketed and hammered by heavy bolter shells, it lets out a blurt of binharic chittering on a wide-band vox signal. Then it keels over, unable to compensate any longer for the massive damage it has received. Though you may not understand the insect-like Machine Cant variant these Automata use, it feels suspiciously like a last cry for reinforcements? Minutes later your own vox flares up.

+++Astartes, Astartes come in. This is Achard. Our staging ground has been attacked. Some form of hunter-machine. Have you encountered anything? I fear our other explorator teams have been wiped out. There were four of the constructs here. They forced us back, slaughtered more than a hundred of my men, but then something happened. They just stopped their assault and left, heading aft. We have moved up to re-secure the inner portal of the hold and have since seen several more passing by, presumably moving up to join the main group? They ignored us entirely, which makes me suspect they have been tasked with a higher priority target first. They may be converging on your position.+++

From far, far behind your position at the lift entrances you hear sounds of movement. It may just be a trick of the ears - echoes multiplied by the hard surface of the bulkheads? - but it certainly sounds like there is a very large group moving rapidly towards you.

***

For Vesalius benefit: Damage suffered during the fight:
Odysseus: 13 Wounds to Arm from blades, 6 Wounds to Body from Rotor Cannon, total 19.
Brynjarr: 12 Wounds to Left Leg from Rotor Cannon
Decimus: Depending on Round 2 Dodge Roll, either…
If pass with 1 or more DoS = 0 Wounds
Or
If pass = 8 Wounds to Left Arm
Or
If fail = 17 Wounds to Left Arm and Head
…from Rotor Cannon.

The level of destruction unleashed by the two automata was breathtaking, and the life runes of Odysseus, Brynjarr and Decimus all flashed an angry red in his HUD. The encounter had lasted less than a minute, and half the squad had been grievously wounded by the massive rotary cannons and flashing blades wielded by the murder-machines. Still, it could have gone much more poorly for Cutlass.

The sounds of more contacts echoed down the elevator shaft behind the kill-team, and Vesalius wasted no time, already assessing his squad-mates’ wounds an preparing an Astartes-grade salve in his narthecium as he disengaged his mag-boots and sharply pushed off the ceiling of the hallway to render aid. His mind raced as he touched down a few paces from Odysseus, wordlessly scanning the librarian’s arm and torso with his multi-wavelength lenses and setting about his grisly task. A stiletto-pointed injector popped forward from his oversized right gauntlet with a pneumatic hiss and a few drops of tissue-growth compound escaped its gleaming tip as he closed the distance with the taciturn psyker.

I’m not 100% sure how much time we have before the next wave of combatants is upon us, so I have elected to roll First Aid tests in the order in which our GM presented them in his preceding post. As each test requires a full round, all three tests will require three rounds minimum (assuming close proximity of everyone involved) for Vesalius to complete his work, but each patient will be held up for only one full round each. If Vesalius has to move from patient to patient, it will take longer to treat everyone involved.

Medicae (First Aid) Tests:

Int52 + 20 (Narthecium + Diagnostor Helm) + 10 (Talented: Medicae) = 82

Medicae (first aid): 3#1d100 57 81 53

Odysseus: 57 (pass)

Brynjarr: 81 (pass)

Decimus: 53 (pass)

Healing Rolls:

IB5 x 2 (Narthecium) + 1d5 (Enhanced Healing)

Enhanced Healing: 3#1d5 1 4 3

Odysseus: 5x2 + 1 = 11 wounds healed

Brynjarr: 5x2 + 4 = 14 wounds healed

Decimus: 5x2 + 3 = 13 wounds healed

Orphiel slowly brought the Land Speeder to the lower deck with a steady inversion roll, not so tumultuous a manoeuvre now the air wasn't turgid with hard rounds.  The spirit of the war machine beneath his gauntlets and sabatons responded with stoic duty.

He glided the vehicle slowly up to the rest of the squad, then pivoted to face down the corridor.

Just in case.

Draak looked around the edges of the lift door frame for some sort of manual over-ride.

Int 44 + 10(Tech Use +10) + 10 (Combi-Tool) =64. Result: 51, Pass 1DoS

At the right side was a small access panel which Draak opened to find a cranked wheel. The wheel was stiff with ancient grease and grime.

Str 67 = 67. Result: 19, Pass 4DoS

Draak grasped the wheel and with care he turned the wheel, slowly the lift doors began to open...

Svelk's joyous laughter bellows down the corridors, and uncommon demeanour for the marine. He yanks his hands off the heavy bolter, but stays in the gunner's position besides Orphiel.

"Predators, regardless of whether they are steel or flesh! ...and more are coming!"

Svelk twists his head to stare at their squad leader.

"I can mine the passageway, but would advice that we don't let them pin us down to converge."

Combat against at least three times as many Vorax is simply not an option. Your only chance is to find a control system - hopefully somewhere on the Command Deck? - and shut them down from there. Draak quickly forces the lift doors open. The shaft is perhaps three metres square, far too small for the remaining Speeder, even if its heavily damaged systems can retain their operational status any longer. You see the top of the elevator car several levels below you and thick plasteel cables that rise from it past you and on several hundred metres into the darkness above.

***

This does seem like an excellent opportunity to use Svelk's Cluster Mines, good thinking! In which case, he needs to make a Concealment (Ag) Test with a +20 bonus as he has the Demolitions Skill. Let me know the result (no. of DoS, etc) and when the time comes I'll roll an Awareness Test for the approaching Vorax. If they fail, they'll each take 4d10 X Dam Pen8!
