Cerberus1775
Hello, Long time wargamer of 40 years and miniatures of almost 30. Primarily 7 Years War in 15mm, Napoleonic in 15mm, and current modern in 20MM. Getting into 40K games after all that time after reading the novels for over 10 years. Looking to build a Word Bearers warband and enjoy painting something larger, and outside what I have done for the last thirty years. Thank you for the opportunity to become part of your community, Neel Warhead01, Xenith, Marshal Reinhard and 5 others 8 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370550-new-old-guy/ Share on other sites
N1SB
Brother, I can only speak for myself but I think you have it the wrong way around, we thank YOU for being part of our community, and for the experience you bring. In fact, I'm curious, what drew you to Word Bearers in particular please? In fact, it's what I'd pick, but I'm more interested in your perspective than mine. Cerberus1775
In fact, I'm curious, what drew you to Word Bearers in particular please? In fact, it's what I'd pick, but I'm more interested in your perspective than mine. I picked Word Bearers because from discussions with players The Word Bearers work well with Deamons. I wanted to do something so different from what I had been painting all these years. I can place a French army for Minden (1759), the 1813-14 Army of Silesia with Swedes and several Corps of French to oppose them, and run a reinforced platoon of US Army, US Marines, British Marines, UNish Infantry, and 3rd World Infantry with vehicle support for all against 130ish Generic "stan" insurgents with vehicles. Personally, I think Lorgar is a spoiled man child, deluded with his fantasies of grandeur. Hense a Warband, "Impenitent Heralds" who were cast out after narrowly avoiding being purged. They have turned to a life of piracy and minor empire building out near the Ghoul Stars. They still worship "Chaos Undivided" but in a southern pentecostals way of narrowly interpreting what it means to worship Chaos and hope that one day they will be raised up in the service of the dark gods while everyone else burns on deamon worlds for being open minded about things like only sacrificing 100, 000 souls instead of 500,000. Very over the top religious crazy that would make Torquemada sigh for the good old days, but with the added fun of deamons. Lastly a chance to play a "not ranked" force that can stand on a more or less equal footing with most opponents. Playing modern insurgents can be fun, but is hard in that you have to work really hard to get that one turn where your opponent is over stretched or wrong footed so that you can give them a few casualties to the masses that you have lost. In large games its not unusual for me to cycle through my insurgents multiple times. But let me buy you a beverage one day and I will tell you of the one time I was able to overrun a SEAL team. My dice were cold for months after that game. I seriously doubt you will ever find me playing in a tournament of any kind. Its just wanting to have some fluffy fun and the Word Bearers give me the best vehicle to what I want to do I believe. WarriorFish
Welcome to 40k and the B&C :tu: Word Bearers are a good choice if you want to mix in the daemonic, and they have a great colour scheme. I look forward to seeing what you get up to in the CSM and Daemons sections :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370550-new-old-guy/#findComment-5707158 Share on other sites

Angel of Death
age is just a number. its overestimated. age can be a sickness, but also, the older you are, the easier you will have to control us young people with your wisdom. :) Cerberus1775 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370550-new-old-guy/#findComment-5707258 Share on other sites

I am in 110% agreement that age is merely a number. I follow the teachings of the wise savant Satchel Paige. "How old would you be if you didnt know how old you are?" Its funny that you say "control with my wisdom". I used to teach 4th and 5th grade before I moved to special education. Basically age 10 to 13. People asked me how I kept my sanity teaching that age group. I always told them that I was one of them at heart, while my classroom was a benevolent dictatorship that was a family for them all. Jeff Bezos is a poor man indeed the day one of my former students called me to tell me that they were the first of their family to graduate college and they had always remembered that I told them often, "... the courage to be great lies in each of us", from Dr. Martin Luther Kings "I have a dream" speech. Sorry to go off on the tangent, but any chance I have to talk about my "kids" gets me going. Brother, clearly you get what imho is the most important aspect of Warhammer, which is The Joke. Its funny that you say "control with my wisdom". Not at all a tangent, reading that I'm realising you would have incredible insight on, say, Kor Phaeron, way beyond any of us. The only hard-earned experience sharing I'd offer now is, perhaps we can collectively compare notes on painting Daemons at a later point. You're focused on Cultists at the moment, Daemons are what you look forward to precisely because they're different, and I'd just say there are delightful shortcuts to painting them that end up looking better than "longcuts". Their fluid neverborn nature allow for all sorts of fun stuff you can do with inks and these new Games Workshop Contrast paints. My plans are to paint them in bright intense colors, then finish them with several coats of clear high gloss enamel to give them a "wet look". Like a new born does just after birth, before they are cleaned up. Thats a description I have gotten from the fluff often when deamons are "born" into our realm anyway. Sorry to go off on the tangent, but any chance I have to talk about my "kids" gets me going. no dont worry, I was sort of joking in a bit "inappropriate" way about age. im just a bit over 20, so you are much older than me. hahaha. :D but yeah, it seems like the things I said sort of applied well to you, since youve been a teacher. I actually think the best teachers were the ones that were like you describe yourself, harsh, but in a fair way. you describe it as a 'benevolent dictatorship' :D hehe, thats quite dark, but I can sense that you do it because you care about their results as students. :) my father is actually a teacher, and he can be very harsh, but its because he cares about his students, and he never says anything about it, but he is a really skillful and damn respected teacher :) I hope you will enjoy it here on the forum, Im a slaanesh player, gonna get my first airbrush this tuesday after 10+ years in the game :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370550-new-old-guy/#findComment-5707643 Share on other sites
Xenith
Welcome to the forums! Word Bearers are indeed cool, and have some amazing modelling opportunities - I'd do them myself if I hadn't already painted so much red power armour. Chaos warbands can also incorporate other legions - there are no rules on how stuff needs to be painted. I'm having fun painting whatever the hell I like, and look forward to seeing what you come up with!
