Biggest note from deployment is I am starting to experiment with infiltrator type rules and see some great potential there. Will be taking lord of deceit in future lists.


I put my infiltrators across 2 objectives with good LOS blocking terrain if I don't win the roll off

BATREP


I get 1st turn...this is huge. My infiltrators basically own 2 objectives and can move away for now.


I see he is vulnerable and decide to drop LF with LOS on his MM retributors (red circle infantry)

I advance chapter master for RR1s and put wulfen nearby for LOS protection as well

I burn CP for morkai bolt (always roll 2 to hit...every game...it is hilarious)

Kill all MM retributors

I split fire and pump the BS2 shot into the nearby rhino and killed it with bonus damage

Rhino explodes killing 1 infiltrator (oops)

Cherub MM shot puts 10/11 on castigator


Fail to kill off repentia that pop out with small arms fire from DP but that is a great opening salvo from LFs


Redemptor 2 kills rhino and 2 repentia die to explosion

I had catechism of fire + tech marine buff on him...easy to blast a rhino when I get +1 to wound and all my dakka is wounding on 4s


Infiltrators fail to kill last repentia with their guns

I charge in...and there is 1 repentia survivor...DOH

Repentia survivor falls back onto my objective #3 and steals it...doh


Kills LF with shooting

Kills 1 wulfen


Preacher and dominion kill all my infiltrators with shooting/melee


He pulls 1 zephrym off the board and into DS

Turn 2

I am super aggressive and go after his last source of anti tank ranged in the rhino bottom right

I also send wulfen + CM + redemptor top left

I zone out half the board basically so his DS Zephrym will have to hit my front lines only


Preacher survives with his 4++ (made all 5 saves again my TH...1 would have killed him)

I didn't perfectly tri point b/c I expected him to die and had positioned to consolidate into the next unit


Sisters bottom right survive losing 1 total...Bjorn and 1 redemptor left rhino with 2 wounds so I couldn't shoot the inside with remaining redemptor...had to pop rhino instead


Redemptor makes his 9" into the sisters that disembarked onto objective

WG multi charge the celestia with MM and same sisters unit


Melee sucks and only 1 sister dies...he uses OBSEC to snag objective from under my redemptor

Good news is I kill all the celestia so no more MM to threaten my dreads

His turn

Up top he blasts wulfen with all his small arms fire including S6 HBs from Vahl and whittles them down to nothing


On the right side his HB retributors first salvo kills a WG with SS

Uses 2 cherubs and kills 0 more (last SS made all 4+ on rolls)

This messes up his plans and he can't send repentia into redemptors spamming MWs

He goes into WG and leaves redemptor alone...his repentia easily wipe out WG

I HI into his sisters with bottom right redemptor to bring guns closer to his other units...wipe them out and take back the objective


Zephyrm charge out of reserve with full reroll buffs do 17 wounds needing 5+ to wound and obliterate redemptor on top left


CM deals only 4 damage total then dies to Vahl when the fight last phase comes around

Turn 3

He makes a TON of saves for Zephyrm from plasma and onslaught gatlings and they survive on point...crap

I did drop them to 3 models so combat threat is neutralized...silver linings


I kill off repentia and palatine with small arms fire and charges

Redemptor far right only kills 3/5 sisters but piles into HBs and prevents an advance onto objective from sisters (the survivors are out of engagement range with my redemptor but are 12.1 away from objective)

Charges into DP and kills it with preacher + 3 surviving zephrym

HB retributors fall back to escape the redemptor

Large unit of zephyrm charge my redemptor and overwatch lands 5 hits but only kills 1 model (DOH!!! That was my last CP saved it for that)

Zephrym put 10/12 wounds onto redemptor but I live

Murderfang HI into the HB retributors who ran near him...slaughters them and consolidate onto his rear objective

Turn 4

I fall back with damaged redemptor then kill zephyrm on right with shooting

They live too long and I have no guns remaining to fire across the board and hurt his units on the left

Make charges with murderfang and far right redemptor for warrior pride

Murderfang kills canonness but she stands up again to retain control


Cyberwolf and chaplain advance to steal objective 3 from Vahl and stand on the objective outside his 3" HI

kills cyberwolf and chaplain...protects his objective by wrapping murderfang in celestials

murderfang can't kill enough and is unable to get clear to kill the canoness a 2nd time on my turn



Turn 5

I just secure objectives and see if I can score for quick turn

Bjorn fails his charge into canoness so I get no warrior pride this turn

Murderfang mops up the celestials and consolidates into canoness



His turn

He falls back from murderfang and kills it with Vahl shooting to keep objective and thats game

I just played a similar sister army so I am learning their rules and tricks quickly

Repentia without advance/charge are nowhere near as scary

Beware the freaking zephyrim...


Side note...my opponent was awesome. This was a 5am game. I had it as 6am in my calendar. Woke up at 530 and saw his message asking where I was.


I messaged him back apologizing and asking if he wanted me to cut 30 minutes off my clock to make up for it.


He let it slide and said no problem.


We had to play fast turns 4 and 5 (hence no screen shots really) but we made it in our remaining time


Currently 2-0 and in 2nd highest points total for this tournament

Not exactly...it is a tricky situation let me clarify

 

Here is the combo I want...

-Wolf lord with warrior born (always fight first) and armor of russ (1 enemy fight last)

-Melee unit (in my game it was a redemptor)

v

-Enemy melee unit (in my game it was zephyrym)

 

 

Enemy turn

 

Zephyrym charge the redemptor. 

 

Wolf lord uses HI and then armor of russ.

 

Current fight order

FIGHT FIRST 

1-Wolf lord (thanks to warrior born)

FIGHT NORMAL

2-Redemptor

3-Zephyrym (fight first from charging and fight last from armor of russ puts them in the fight normal group)

 

This situation gives me 2 activations before my opponent

 

HOWEVER...the specific wording of the counter offensive stratagem makes it legal

No matter what the Wolf Lord with warrior + armor of russ can't be stopped from going first. 

However...it denies me the 2 alpha strikes in melee and leaves me vulnerable

 

In my theory craft I had an unstoppable melee deterrent...in reality it is strong but has a weakness to exploit

This is a batrep that was delayed...pre nerf DE is in effect

Only a few screen shots due to clock and stress etc. but since it is DE I figured I would write it up anyways


Team Tournament-Finals for 1st

*if you have never played a team tournament I highly recommend it...1 codex per team so to fill in the roster they need the non-meta players


The match making is exciting b/c your captain can try and avoid bad matchups. This means you can play a skew list and not worry about take all comers.

Round 1 v DG on scouring

Won 90-30 or so

Round 2 v Astra militarum on scorched (6 leman russ and 2 tank commanders)

Won 100-26 or so


Unfortunately it also means sometimes you get paired into a list as a throw away...that is what my game was. The rest of my team got matchups and I dove on the DE grenade to spare them.

Have never played against the dark technomancer and wrack combo before...we joke b/c it was nerfed so technically I will never play against it again in the future either

I pop wisdom of the ancients and bring LF down to kill raiders

If I can drop 2-3 I can weather return fire


I start to push everything out aggressively

Murderfang and a cyberwolf have to go into the middle objective to keep the domination points flowing


LF + Bjorn + all 3 redemptors putting shots into raiders

Only pop 1 raider...

I rolled many 2s for wounding and he made many saves for the rest

Miserable failure of a shooting phase


I do manage to kill 4/5 wracks with small arms so...yay

Blasters + DL put 8 wounds on far right redemptor

He kills murderfang with a combo of left over shots including wrack liquefiers


Drazar has come in and wiped out the chaplain...I couldn't get into combat with a Bjorn HI but I used the free move to get closer

Succubus has wiped out the yellow WG and is hiding on the opposite side of the wall from the far right redemptor

Turn 3

I pop 2 more raiders

I get all charges except far left dread into the luckiest wrack ever


The little guy is his MVP so far

He survived all small arms fire turn 2 and he was the killing blow on murderfang in shooting (otherwise I live and kill something with fight on death in melee)

Then he charged and moved just enough to put obsec on the damn objective letting his grotesque pile in and touch the objective

He then survived all counter attacks from LF (he made all 3 5+++ FNP

...I lose control of the objective and drop to 5 primary (2-2 tie wrack + 1 grotesque v chapter master + drop pod)


I make a MAJOR mistake with melee here

I have drazar on foot in front of me and his succubus on foot in front of me

I am UNAWARE that the succubus has a rule to fight then consolidate wherever she wants...even away from units


I send WG into drazar

I send vets + tech marine + redemptor into succubus


I kill drazar with first activation

Succubus has fight first and goes next...kills vets then uses special rule to run from combat and totally escape my units nearby

Bjorn whiffs and only puts 6 wounds on the 9 wound raider (ya...he choked too)


What I SHOULD have done was send my armor of russ into drazar and kill succubus first...a note to remember for future DE games


If melee had gone as I hoped i would have killed succubus and drazar so my dreads have nothing to fear from his melee units

Bjorn would have killed a raider then consolidated into the nearby raider to stop it firing

The company vets would have piled in and consolidated near bjorn to protect him from the remaining anti tank fire

In theory i would have just removed all major threats from dreads and been able to push aggressively in the following turns


But you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men...

I lose in convincing fashion...don't even remember the specific score


The GOOD news is I didn't get curb stomped like my foot lists.

I feel I had a chance to win but the dice just crapped out

2 separate turns I was in position to wipe out his anti tank and give my dreads a boost in survival and I whiffed badly on both of them

The melee failure hurt too...if I had wiped succubus I have many more units alive after for the fight of backup units as he comes out of his transports


The best news is DE got nerfed and the list is no longer possible while mine has been upgraded with tweaks and changes.


Still waiting to run into a DE list with the current version of Bjorn and friends...

Interesting list...could tweak it and replace venerable with a wulfen dread equivalent and buy company veterans for the bodyguard boost.

Based on army lists and terrain I think I have the advantage.

He has 1 real threat to my redemptors in his silent king

There is a massive obscuring piece midboard I can use to avoid him

If the chance presents itself I can go after the king and his guns...otherwise I just need to avoid the silent king guns

Ok here we go


I decide to YOLO and send my LF in against his Silent King

The pod can land next to the obscuring ruins and the LF can hop out and see the king

King is within bonus damage AND closest target

Chaplain turboboosts over to grant catechism of fire

Chapter master advances as well for reroll


I have unleashed the strongest combo possible at his king...lets see how it does

When cherub is done helping I manage to kill both menhirs and put 7 damage into the king

bad news is king lived

good news is I removed his primary anti tank guns so my redemptors can operate freely in future turns


Speaking of redemptors...I fire to try and star thinning the herd

He uses the resurrections to spread and gain ground...oops I didn't expect that

I basically killed 0 and helped increase his movement...DOH


He goes hard after the chaplain


He drops chaplain to 1 wound with all his shooting...I am super lucky...my buffs will be available


Plasmacyte eats one of his destroyers (rolled a 1) to buff them

His destroyers charge and kill DP


Wolf Lord HI towards necron warriors to move into middle of board and score Oath

Turn 2

Chaplain flees for his life and goes to hide near company vets on the left

I bring in an extra redemptor on the far right and a wolf to screen out my DZ from veil of darkness who may kill off the vets and expose the chaplain


Shooting is horrible...whatever necrons I shot basically stand back up

He also used a -1 wound strat on his destroyers to discourage shooting them


We joke how demoralizing it is to see not necrons dying


Chapter master makes charge out of LOS into warriors to prevent wulfen from eating over watch

Wulfen charge in but only kill 15 Warriors (booooo...I had 26 potential exploding hits and rolled horrible)

6 stand back up (9 died total)

He also pulls every necron from possible combat near my chapter master so I activate and go behind my redemptor for LOS protection


I am not happy with wulfen performance...was relying on a dead warrior blob...it is causing me issues


Left Redemptor charges into destroyers

He uses a -1 to wound strat on his T5 destroyers again...I kill 3 but he rolls for 2 to come back to life!!!


He drops redemptor to 6 wounds in response


Right side my forward redemptor makes a long charge into his ghost ark and punches it for some damage. Bjorn and other redemptor fail charges


At the end of the turn he pops insane bravery on warriors to ignore morale and is down to 4 CP (he had 13 to my 4 at start...using lots of buffs like -1 to wound to save his destroyers from shooting + melee)

Skorpekh destroyers fall back from redemptor

Orange warriors pop out and advance to shoot my WG...they make it onto objective and steal it

2 wulfen magically survive all the incoming fire (T5 was a huge deal)

Only 1 WG dies to warriors


I HI the redemptor and slingshot past his necron warriors so I can score oath in the middle again


WG also HI into warriors but only kill 7/10

3 stand back up and he steals objective and removes my flag


On right flank his silent king goes into the lead redemptor and kills it

Turn 3

Left Redemptor kills 2/3 destroyers with 6 overcharged plasma


Company vets move up and charge into warriors to try and take objective back. Kill 3 leaving 4.

They fail to kill WG and WG rip them apart.

I decide to consolidate into the last destroyer to save chaplain from dying in melee.

Destroyer kills the 2 SS with his free attacks but is under control and 0 threat to chaplain with 1 wound remaining.


I bring in my final wolf to cover my DZ while the current wolf runs onto objective to replace the company vets



On the right flank his silent king is exposed but I need to wipe out necron warriors to reach him in melee


The change to fight rules means I can charge...use armor of russ and get every other charging unit to fight before the silent king


I jump my chapter master with armor of russ nearby and send the last surviving wulfen in to eat potential overwatch


Bjorn and last redemptor on the right move up to charge in


I need to wipe the undying necron warriors to open a charge to his king

I fire EVERYTHING and fail...reduce models to 2 only...they are in the way and I need to go around


Redemptor only kills 7/12 only with opening salvo and max blast plasma

It is just filthy how many he saves and how many stand up


charge phase I get lucky

Murderfang comes in from reserves near his rear and makes 9" charge into thralls and kills them then goes into warriors (made it on the reroll)


Bjorn also makes his multi charge and barely gets around the necron warrior road block

Redemptor fails it

Techmarine makes charge and fails to kill any necron warriors (they reanimate)

Bjorn activates and kills silent king with his melee YAY!!!


He spends his final CP for auto explode


Silent king dies with 9" auto explosion

SW victory!!!


That was a crazy intense game. Dice went bonkers turns 3 and 4


I was really annoyed I didn't wipe his necron warriors. He didn't even have the full resurrection combo in place.


I really expected the wulfen with 26 attacks and 3s rerolling to wound to wipe their target. That failure set me back all game


All game long I debated whether I should have held my LF back until turn 2 so I could hit a target with ALL my ranged firepower (all 3 redemptors + LF)


In the end things worked out and I simply had too many dreads to remove.

Bjorn got to go on a rampage for the first time in my games and tore his way through all the quantum shielding with rerolling attacks.


I am 1-1 in this tournament now

Bad news is I am 1 point ahead of the only other SW...Jon from GH

Lots of difficult games ahead

I don't really get the point scoring though. Shouldn't it be 46 to 84? or where do you get the 10 extra points from?

Super broken combo cheats from the sound of it...he gets the free move/fight/resurrection rules still

I win roll for deployment and choose to go first b/c inquisitor might take my objective from me

I put infiltrators on one of the outside objectives and use walls to hide but stay outside 1" to deny easy melee


I put my WWS dreads in safe positions where I can launch a counter attack as well

Almost everything starts on the difficult terrain so his mortars have -1 to hit


He puts his castellan way in the back

He hides his magaera and his WWS armigers

Other units are deployed aggressive

Pregame moves crusaders onto mid objective and takes control before the game has even started


Advances warglaive into infiltrator point blank shots and charge

Kills 3 infiltrators with shooting

Charges in and kills 1 after transhuman

I pass morale and keep objective...lucky for me

My turn

I decide not to bring in LF b/c they will die to magaera

I figure 2 redemptors and Bjorn can kill the armigers

I buff the bottom left redemptor with techmarine and catechism of fire combo

I pop wisdom of ancients on bjorn

Chaplain zooms up and to the right to set up possible charges next turn


I put chapter master rerolls on CM and send him as a kamikaze missile to the middle

If I don't remove his 2 crusaders he starts racking up hold more points

I can lose the CM in this game and still get my work done


Shooting time

I take aim at his warglaive to try and save my infiltrator

Bjorn fires 2 lascannons

Redemptor1 with +1 to wound fires everything and is in rapid fire for his SB

Redemptor2 is in 24" so fires everything

Rerolling 1s to hit/wound


Good news...I get 3 overcharged plasma from each redemptor

Thats the end of the good news


Absolute fail all around

He makes a majority of his 4++ rotated ions to survive with 4/12 on his warglaive


Melee phase doesn't get any better

Chapter master rolls two 1's to wound and crusaders make 2/3 saves

He keeps the objective and my CM can't consolidate into the safety of the wall corner either


My big decision this turn was (1) bring LF in to help kill those 2 armigers or (2) keep in reserve for the big knights and counter attack when they come out


I went for the big play and it cost me big time

Turn 2

He gets hold more b/c of my failure in the middle

To add insult to injury his crusaders roll 3+ and use faith to bring back the dead model


He brings his scions on left side of the wall by objective 2 to zone me out and away from his magaera

He walks his moirax to point blank and kills the infiltrator and takes the objective away

His warglaive goes pointblank to the redemptor and drops it to 2 wounds with all his thermal shots

Magaera also comes out to play and kills chapter master and splashes a few wounds on my bottom redemptor

Magaera kills chapter master


He charges the redemptor with the warglaive

I HI with the techmarine and spend my last CP to get the wulfen into combat as well

I NEED to kill the damn warglaive


In melee the warglaive whiffs and doesn't hurt the redemptor

A little luck my way...I won't complain

Redemptor punches it to death in return

My turn

I bring in cyberwolf bottom left for engage points

WG drop in to charge crusaders in middle


I have to go all in to kill his exposed magaera now

I put my LFs behind the obscuring where they can fire safely but are immune to return shots

My crippled redemptor falls back out of LOS but can still shoot his magaera b/c obscuring

Techmarine repairs him and gives him +1 to shoot buff so he is firing on 3s despite being bracketed

Chaplain puts catechism of fire on top redemptor and gets +2 charges off

I burn my only CP for keen senses

I make the morkai bolts BS2 and roll a 1 then a 2...so lucky for me I now have reroll wounds of 1

I hit with 7/8 shots needing 3s

I wound with 6/7 needing 4s WOO HOO

He saves 5/6 needing 4s DOH!!!


I pop the cherub and when all is said and done he only takes 8 damage total from long fangs

The redemptor with no other shots fires NON overcharged through the obscuring...rolls 1 for shots and does nothing to Magaera


I swap targets to the moirax with bjorn and the other redemptor...fire small arms at magaera b/c he gets +1 to wound still but overcharges at Moirax

Roll 2 for plasma shots but both go through and drops moirax to 7 wounds

Bjorn nails both shots and kills the moirax with 10 damage


Wulfen make their charge into middle crusaders and remove banner from middle

It was a risky move b/c I need to block the magaera from rushing straight into bjorn...I daisy chain to touch objective 2 as well and hope the magaera stays back

WG fail charge into the middle...they are hanging out in danger zone now

Command phase crusaders free move onto middle and raise banner again

Gdamn miracle tricks!

Gives him hold more bonus AGAIN


His magaera flees back behind the wall


Dice decide to help me this turn and he whiffs all his armigers and mortars shooting

Castellan also whiffs and he only kills 4/5 Wulfen and 2/5 WG

If the wulfen survives I get extra primary points and hold objective 2

Unfortunately I fail morale (rolled a 4...needed 3)

I need to focus on scoring and start catching up

Bottom left cyberwolf advances onto objective 2 and hides in the corner but outside 1" melee of walls


Reserve redemptor comes in bottom left kills all scions to protect the wolf. Now his only option is to fire mortars

I have no idea where to put murderfang...I can't really move him around as needed with all that firepower facing him...I toss him top right with LOS protection from redemptor

Last cyberwolf comes in top right for engage scoring


WG move into the middle and wipe the middle crusaders then consolidate and hide near wall


LF advance to middle to line up shots next turn

If he pops out to kill me I have bjorn and 3 redemptors for counter shooting

Chaplain fails to put catechism of fire on the redemptor..bad start b/c that would be wounding on 2s rerolling 1s for plasma

Hits with 1...wounds with 1...does 3 damage

SW loss


I had plenty of opportunities to pull this out...I just couldn't get the kills in the clutch

Shooting was underwhelming all game and eventually it costs me the chance at victory

I only killed 2 armigers with my dedication to shooting in the list. That is very bad performance.



His tiny force of astra militarum also did a ton of work for him scoring secondaries


I totally underestimated them when I first saw his list.

Those miracle mechanic crusaders with command phase moves to grab objectives were huge for him


I am now 2-1 but the good news is I am the top scoring player in my grouping.

There is an outside shot at the finals if I win out and end up as #2 due to my score.

My shooting combo is active

Catechism of fire is placed on LFs after they arrive to wound on 3+

Morkai bolts land giving me reroll wounds of 1 for ALL units firing

He uses rotate ion for a 4++ save

I only push 2 meltas through after he rolls hot for his saves...I get a 6 and a 1 for 11 damage after bonus damage kicks in

Cherub rolls are all 1s and 2s

The rest is chipped away with overcharged plasma (managed 8 plasma shots but he saved most of them) and gatlings but it is not enough

I drop magaera to 4 wounds but fail to kill it...crap

LF charge b/c why not...Magaera overwatch kills 4/5

Morale removes the last one at the end of my turn

I did this so Murderfang + redemptor could charge with 0 fear of overwatch...I knew LF were dead anyways.

After the game he said a knight player usually won't waste overwatch on warglaives. I will take that into account next time

I only drop magaera to 7 wounds with full melee from the redemptor and bjorn

Chapter manager does manage to kill war glaive

With decent luck I could have dropped 2 magaeras and had a chance.

Instead I drop 0 and it is game over now

This was a butt kicking and a bad showing

My opponent kept apologizing for the skewed dice. I told him no need.

Sometimes these types of games simply happen. Just take the L and move along.

I failed most of the charges I needed...he rolled very hot for saves and his own shooting. Thems the breaks.

Looking back I have had buzzards luck in this tournament

Round 1 victory turned into loss due to miscommunication about obsec

Round 3 forfeit due to scheduling

Round 4 loss with extremely cold dice

Since I am 1-3 at this point there is really no point playing the final round

With both pending tournaments over I am done experimenting with Bjorn + Redemptors

It was successful overall but I don't like the play style. I found myself conservative and trying to keep the dreads alive. That usually meant hiding or going in reserve.

When you start with 4 CP total it is hard to reserve 2 redemptors and pull off all the tricks you need.

I may experiment with variants later on but I need a change of pace from the list.

Swapping to some aggressive berserker sagas now!!!

Wow! What a sad end to this Saga. I have never faced Knights but it looks like a very tough matchup for most army, I'm surprised we don't see those so much in tourney.

Magaera are tough b/c you NEED to kill them or they just spend a CP to fight at top bracket and get revenge

 

The hardest part is Magaera have an invulnerable save in melee.  All other knights Bjorn and his friends shred with 0 difficulty

A knight with a 4++ bounces just enough damage to survive

I am using the Lord of Deceit redeploy trick and experimenting with a company ancient
I am also testing a smash chaplain and wulfen
As for my opponent...not much pre game...busy IRL and scheduled this quickly
He is a SW and we have played plenty of times...I should know the basics by now

SS saves all 5/5 Redemptor hits...holy crap lucky
TWC kill 3/5 wulfen but in return I kill 2 TWC and DP in return (couldn't move to attack range b/c distance so I killed pod)I fail morale but only lose 1...there is a single wulfen survivor
I'm happy with the trade
In the middle I HI my incursors because his LS is within 6"...use the movement to secure objective and get free movement towards his back lines but I do NOT engage in combat. I want to be free to move next turn.

Place incursors into assault doctrine and launch them at his RP...they shoot and kill a WG along the way
They kill RP in melee and lose 1 to fight on death
The surviving wulfen falls back to the other side of the wall to avoid redemptor guns
I drop inceptors to try and finish his TWC...only kill 1
Luckily the last TWC HI into my last surviving wulfen and they kill each other
My Chaplain kills BCs and tries to hold onto objective 2

Ancient lands 4 wounds on chaplain but he saves 3/4 and lives
Chaplain easily kills the ancient and he takes center board
I made a HUUUUGE error here
When my ancient got to activate I didn't see the move until after I rolled dice
His redemptor had piled in and was closer to me than chaplain
I could have piled in AROUND the redemptor and left combat with his chaplain...that means rites of war keeps the objective
Stupid move I was pissed about not seeing until too late
I was SOOOO laser focused on getting the ancient to swing first I didn't consider alternate plans until it was too late

I need 1 4++ to save my company vets but fail even with CP. I was torn on this b/c I also wanted to save it for transhuman on infiltrators v TWC Lord
LFs put 2 damage rolls onto Bjorn. He rolls 3 and 1...I am very lucky. FNP stops 1 and Bjorn is at 6/8. Could have been much much worse

Lots of c'tan and mortal wounds...better avoid LOS this game

I also can't kill them in a single turn unless my psyker gets luck and rolls 3 damage for smite

I think I will play to kill everything but the c'tan

If they get close I can try and put wounds on him during his turn

A LF or inceptor firing on death and damaging a ctan will be a big deal this game

I kill 2/3 scarabs and put 3/4 wounds on the last base


I also charge stupidly with wolf to make him burn a CP forgetting I have oath and the wolf was supposed to earn those points


Playing on a clock is messing me up badly

I lost the game with my 1st decision moving the WRONG freaking objective

I think I have done this in the past as well


I needed the automatic guaranteed objective 4 near my wall


Then all I need to do is fight over the middle with focus forces


By being a dumb dumb I didn't have the range or units to contest 2 objectives a turn

That is a bad combination...not much else to say about how this turned out


The clock frazzled me for no reason. I have done plenty of clock training in the past. I think it was the clock + crappy internet connection to the host that really got me. I couldn't move or precisely place anything. Just picking up dice was a chore every time.


But those are all excuses...need to focus and overcome no matter what next time


I recognize my failings and will correct them

Pregame & Deployment

Tanks...lots and lots of T8 tanks

But I have played him and a version of the list before

Use terrain...play the mission

I pick

Raise the banners

Oath

Bring it down

He picks

Assassination

I forward deploy incursors to try and reach his manticores if I win the roll

Infiltrators take the middle to score oath every turn

Left flank has wulfen

Right flank has a single wolf hiding in a tiny piece of terrain

Middle has everything else

I make sure to always have 3 character protection layers around Bjorn

2 manticores can expose Bjorn to tank fire if I am not careful

LF and ancient in DP

Plasma inceptors and Murderfang in reserve

I pull incursors back to safety

I save all but 1 after CP reroll (3+ save thanks to obstacle cover + storm shield)

My turn

I decide I may as well bring the DP down and move out aggressively

I burn CP for wisdom of the ancients on Bjorn + Chaplain recitation of focus + keen senses

Bjorn shuffles left and has to stay behind the wall but is able to extend his 6" reroll hit/wound bubble far to the left

Chaplain is also able to turbo boost into position

Incursors and company vets raise 3 banners for me

RP steps forward to the other side of the wall for LOS

Smite tank for 1 damage total

Storm caller works but I perils for 1

LF kill tank commander1 (2 LFs fired here with bonus damage) and demolisher1 (3 LFs fired here at long range)

Cherub shots get 2 damage on a 3rd tank

LS HB gets through too for 2 more

Wulfen fail 9" charge and lose 3/4 to overwatch (he spent CP to hit on 5s and got 4/9 HBs and 1/4 turret hits to wound me)

I pass morale at least and max oath

Turn 2

Manticore1 puts 8 shots into company vet but I make 2/2 3+ saves

Manticore2 puts 7 shots into company vet but I make 2/2 3+ saves thanks to a CP reroll

Fairly good dice there to survive both salvos. Huge game changer

He starts firing at my LF next and kills 3 MM and the packleader

Only 1/3 LF fire on death + packleader fires his bolter too

I get both hits with BS2 rerolling but land 0 wounds (need 4 to wound these big T8 tanks)

I chose to kill the packleader because it removed the unit from LOS for remaining units

I have 2 MM alive for next turn

Tank kills 4/5 incursors right flank

Last one runs to morale

My turn

Time to bring in the inceptors midfield and Murderfang on the left flank

Wisdom of the ancients on Bjorn again

Chaplain turbo boosts left to help melee forces and auto chants +2 charges

Bjorn shuffles right to get LOS on mid tanks

Bjorn does 4 damage to tank1 (8/12 left)

LF did 2 damage to tank2 (10/12 left)

2 Inceptors do 4 damage to tank2 (6/12 left)

1 Inceptor gets 2 damage on tank1 but dies from plasma explosion on a 1...this is bad b/c I have spread and am now out of coherency 6/12 left

Sgt does 5 damage to tank1 dropping it to 1/12 wounds remaining (have master crafted on 1 gun)

On left flank LS charges in first to tie up the tank and eat overwatch (he declines)

Murderfang makes his 7" charge

Chaplain charges in

Wulfen survivor charges in as well

Murderfang activates and kills tank

Everyone uses free movement to consolidate and hide behind walls

Right flank I send a cyberwolf in first

Wolf dies to overwatch but protects Wulfen in the process

Wulfen make 8" charge safely

Wulfen kill tank and consolidate into nearby middle tank to stop it from shooting next round

The remaining inceptors fail morale on a 6 (I was out of coherency and had to yank the sgt)

1 left alive now

I get 3 for oaths for holding middle + killing vehicles

Turn 3

10 demolisher cannon shots into murderfang...he saves 2/3 on 6+ only eats 3 damage total (PHEW!!!)

Manticore1 puts 7 failed saves on Murderfang and he dies under a massive payload of missiles

Tank commander kills 1/2 LF and the last surviving wulfen nearby

I can't activate on death because all targets are out of LOS or more than 24" away

During combat phase the Chaplain and Wulfen HI

Wulfen put 2 damage on tank

Chaplain puts 0 wounds on tank

He has been joking all game he has no melee units

I joke his tanks just matched the vaunted SW smash chaplain in melee

My turn

Bjorn and my forces in the middle push up to give me attacking options next round

Chaplain falls back then charges back in and kills tank with savage strike and benediction of fury

I had the plasma inceptor survivor advance over and charge from out of LOS to deny overwatch first

I use the pile in and consolidation boost to move the inceptor into his tank commander and hide the chaplain behind the wall

Ancient makes a long charge to assist the wulfen in middle and does 6 damage on tank (got 3 out of 7 wound rolls with 5+...lucky)

Wulfen kill the tank off when they activate. I was just hoping to tie it up...bonus kill baby!

Turn 4

He splits fire with tank commander putting small arms into inceptor and big gun into chaplain

The tank commander fails to kill the inceptor so his big gun shots are wasted

He instead kills chaplain with 2 manticores worth of firing

Wulfen with TH survives shots from the far right tank

Good news is his manticores are OUT OF AMMO now!!!

My turn

Hammer time! The inceptor is still alive so the last surviving wulfen with a TH/SS gets a safe charge into the tank commander

Wulfen gets 5 hits and wounds into tank commander...he saves 4/5 with 6+

Doh...

I also advance bjorn and infiltrators towards his lines

He is low on units now...no way he can shoot Bjorn with guns bc infiltrators will eat up shots

His tank commander shoots wulfen to death and he falls back with all his units to hide from me

Tank commander spends all his CP and finally kills inceptor in melee

My turn

I kill manticore that advanced to objective 6 to hide with Bjorn (6 damage) and keen senses LF (5 damage)

Not much else besides basic scoring to report

SW victory!!!

This helps erase the stench of last game

I am now 2-1 and hope to finish this pod with a 3-1 record

I think this is my least favorite list of the ones I am currently testing

I love Bjorn and Murderfang but this list is lacking synergy and feels off to me

4 plasma inceptors is definitely too many points and they don't seem to be carrying their weight

After the game my opponent and I had 30 or so minutes just talking 40K. Different lists to experiment etc.

He has a 200 kroot list he thinks would be hilarious

We also talked blood ravens and different psyker combinations

This was more fun to me than the game.

It is nice to connect over the shared hobby and socialize

Glad to see you bounce back from your off game. Even GOATs have mental lapses sometimes.

 

Like my old pack leader used to say, "What do you do when you fall off the Thunder Wolf? Pray it doesn't eat you."
