I'd say most Chapters do well as pure Primaris, with the exceptions being White Scars, Blood Angels and Space Wolves. Dark Angels can do very well also, but to be honest you're missing so much more if you don't take their Firstborn options.

Go Ultramarines, but then I'm biased ;)

Ironhands sounds great because I really like the look of the big tanks. so IH might be what I need to actually make them viable… Even though I am sure things will change with their new codex…Knights of Byzantium look sweet too. Ultramarines.. well… tbh they ate the safest bet as no matter the changes they will be always viable and relatively competitive…

As said before, you can run any chapter pure primaris and be okay, it's designed to work for all chapters. There are strong firstborn units for all chapters but some of the ones with unique firstborn units still would prefer to base their strategy on those like dark angels terminators, blood angels Sanguinary guard , space wolves cavalry, and the like. Iron hands can make good use of both primaris and firstborn, (drop pod devastator squads and forgeworld vehicles especially. Compared to other chapters firstborn)

However they are the best at buffing vehicles in general like the grav tanks, making them degrade slower allowing a tank with a mere handful of wounds to fire at full effect makes them more usable. They also like eradicators and anything else using heavy weapons.

If that appeals definitely consider them. Otherwise all chapters have varying uses for different primaris units

Arbiter7 - I think you can make a Primaris army work with any chapter, that said all of them are going to miss firstborn units. Its just something you have to make peace with. Its a lot more viable than it used to be, and you can still make a really good army but a mixed marine force is going to better than pure Primaris or pure Firstborn force.

As someone who has been in the hobby a long time, I wouldn't worry so much about what is the best option right now and go with the chapter that you like the most (or the second most if your starting a new project). The game just changes so much faster now, for example I wouldn't be shocked at all if the 8th edition supplements get updated before 9th is over.

If you don't have a favorite you really should just consider making your own custom chapter with a unique paint scheme. Then you can adjust to whatever cool stuff they come up with down the line by switching supplements. As long as your not trying to run multiple supplements at once most people don't care.
