TheUnlikelyGamer84
First off a little background about me. So I’ve been playing 40K for many years since the end of fourth edition. I took a break for sixth and most of seventh I came back just before eighth. This was also when I joined my first tournament, 16 players, and a 1st place finish with a codex that was considered weak at that time, Orks. I played only a few tournaments in 8th of the same or slightly larger events and placed 2x 2nd and a 3rd. I have been itching to play another tournament as I’ve been doing very well in my local meta and all point values with my wolves. Close to 100% win rate in 9th edition. I decided that this year I would sucker my brother into coming with me to the GW GT in Orlando as it’s a big event with 250 players and it’s only one hour from my house. TiguriusX
That list looks fun MFM reduced wulfen from 25 to 22ppm BS didn't update yet 10 wulfen means 30 points You should have 17 points remaining What to do with those points? Well...your list looks capable of a new trick I have been theory crafting Lord of deceit was buffed to a free redeploy after knowing who goes first. With 2 incursors (or infiltrators) and a phobos rune priest you can threaten turn 1 charge, block off pregame movement or bluff and safely redeploy those units. This includes going into strategic reserve for free! Incursors with successor traits and assault doctrine would be AP2 and provide a decent threat Not sure if that messes up your plan but it is in my theory craft bucket right now. Never been tested Besides that crazy idea you need to forget your local games and look at tournament and net lists. The top codexes you need to research and be ready for Admech Drukhari Real life $ appears to be the only thing slowing admech down right now The TTS lists haven't appeared in real games yet. One admech player told me he couldn't find enough ranger models in his area Dark angels may present a problem as well bc you have few reroll wounds for the transhuman tricks and they have secondary objectives that let them sit back and wait for you Edited June 15, 2021 by TiguriusX Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370699-playing-in-my-first-gt/#findComment-5711154 Share on other sites
Jorin Helm-splitter
I would recommend reading any review of the new books, lurk in their sub forums in combo threads, and watching streams. That said I do think its worth pointing out that SoB & Admech haven't received FAQs yet, and DE have seen some nerfs already. So it may be a bit early to plan for them. One piece of advice I can give though is try to have a prep period where you play 6 games in a weekend staying focused for that long definitely is a skill. TheUnlikelyGamer84
@ tigurius. I had used that warlord trait a lot with Raven guard last edition and have thought about it this Ed but haven’t tried it yet. May be a good option for completing some secondaries and stacking 1 side of the table. Additionally I could see two units of incursors going for first turn charges through terrain to shut down some shooting/ ignore overwatch. @jorin I’m only a couple months out almost to the day. With tournaments coming back slowly we shall see if an FAQ comes out for sisters. Admech is highly probable in that time frame. I have been watching a lot of videos but it’s a lot to absorb. I also feel that these content creators miss a lot of things as they are often not playing the faction they are reviewing. 6 straight games will be tuff for practice as I have a young family and family does come first. The event weekend is different as they will be back in school by then and I will only be gone 1 day technically. TheUnlikelyGamer84
@bjorn For the Wolf king and the Allfather! I’ll start compiling data here Admech So my research on Admech has revealed that Lucius Skitarri core models with data tether can be 1+ sv/ 6+ inv ignoring -1 and -2 Ap anywhere on the field of battle. Due to their forge world, indoctrina bulwark and shroudpsalm vs dmg 1 weapons, and at least 2+ vs other weapons. This includes vanguard, jump troops, and iron striders. I need to make sure I kill the Marshall and manipulus wherever possible to assist in debuffing the vanguard hordes. The Warlord Trait, the Luminescent Blessing, gives further durability – it lets you choose a CORE unit in your command phase to gain the ability to only be wounded on an unmodified 4+. It lasts the entire battle round not just one phase. Lucius also has a transhuman defense in a single unit...so 20 infantry with all of the above plus 4+ to wound Lucius can also teleport a unit + character with lucius relic any turn...including turn 1 They combo that with a rapid fire strat and you eat 80 S5 AP2 shots Zoning out admech infantry is a 5 turn headache Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370699-playing-in-my-first-gt/#findComment-5711212 Share on other sites
TheUnlikelyGamer84
Yes except their trans human is better because instead of one phase it lasts the entire battle round, so your turn and their turn, and anywhere on the battlefield due to data tether. Yeah that’s the solar flare relic. It means I need to kill that character ASAP. To stop the buffs and prevent that deep strike later. Hiding MSU squads maybe the best way to mitigate some admech shooting. Kill any planes with focus fire and make them come to you into charge range and Hurricane them to prevent overwatch. Maybe a cheap inquisitor with terrify would be good as well for more deny overwatch Shenanigans. It also seems there anything I can do mortals to them is a good way to kill them because they don’t have a safe for it. Murderous hurricane does not need line of sight but terrify will. But still guaranteeing you don’t get over watched and get a chance to fight or force them to shoot what you want or use CP or special abilities to fall back in order to shoot potentially away from objectives. Yeah your family should come first, I only brought up the six games because I know I've done worse on the second day of Adepticon tournaments. As far as streamers I tend to watch the Table top titan games because they show their feed with people asking them questions and calling out mistakes. You do have to skip about the first 45 minutes of most of there reports though. For SoB some of the new strategies I've seen discussed are: Mortifiers with heavy flamers, with the cleansed by fire strat each mortifier in the unit gets 12 auto hit str 6 ap -1 one shots. 20 sister bricks to take advantage of defenders of the faith, they basically gain transhuman & bolter drill until the start of their next movement phase if they're within 3" of an objective. Most people want to try blessed bolts with this, storm bolters on a unmodified 6 to hit deal 2 mortal wounds, six mortals max. They do have to pop the stratagem during their movement phase so you know its there but going through 20 sisters is going to be a pain. Morvenn Vahl - less a strategy and more just seen as an auto take. 1 Exorcist - they have a stratagem that lets them ignore LoS which is something to look for. Overall I think the SoB codex is a lot like our 9th edition marine book in that it was nerf compared to the prior book. So Admech and DE may be what you want to focus on. TheUnlikelyGamer84
I feel like there may be utility gained out of using a Xenos inquisitor with esoteric lore. Terrify can be used for denying overwatch and the trait will allow the possibility of getting CP when opponent uses a stratagem. Against shooting units like bricks of Skitarri and sisters, or even Tau, being able to survive the charge will be a big deal especially for units like my Wulfen and incursors. Jorin Helm-splitter
One thing that I forgot to mention about sisters is that every unit can deny the witch, they only get to roll a d6 but an unmodified 6 denies the power no matter what. They have a sacred rite that buffs this to a 5+ (it used to add +3, but I think this change is stronger). On top of that they have stratagem that lets them spend a cp after a failed deny test, to have a 50% of stopping the power (pretty sure this was in the old codex as well). It does balance out a bit because they can't use miracle dice for it, but if GK and TS drop before the tournament they may be popular counter. He actually got me 3 Cp over the course of the game. But was easy assasinate points once he was exposed. The eliminators and incursors were obliterated by Ctan powers before they could do anything as he got to go first. which was a shame as I was going to snipe a character and charge with the incursors into his lines to try and pin him in his deployment for a turn. The librarian using lord of deceit was cool but I think I would do better to have two incursor units to use it with or at least 1 infiltrator unit for durability. I really want to try using a Callidus assasin as he started the game with 14 CP , Imhotep gives 2. It would have brought him to zero cp turn 1 since he used 7! That could be crazy powerful against armies that use tons of CP. I’m going to continue to experiment. Maybe 2 patrol detachments so I can take the callidus and an inquisitor. Although the 2 cp I use to take a second patrol detachment may outweigh whatever CP I refund if unlucky. TiguriusX
Just remember the callidus is not guaranteed extra CP But when it activates it definitely makes CP hungry alpha strike armies real sad How come your lord of deceit units got obliterated? If you lose the roll for first turn Lord of Deceit lets you move them...including free placement into strategic reserves. TheUnlikelyGamer84
I used the trait to redeploy and stack one side of the board which set me up to make a first turn charge. I know it was a gamble but he won the role off. I had hoped to pin him in his deployment for a turn and stop him from grabbing 3 objectives which he needed for primary and his necron secondary ancient machinery. He then moved the ctan and cast a bunch of powers. I didn’t know the Ctan could use a strat to cast 3 powers and that they were 24”. And he rolled well. Lots of mortals. Out right killed the eliminators and took the incursors down to 2. Then he made a 9” charge with his lychguard. The Libby hung in there until the chapter master came in and they killed 5 lychguard together but unbelievably 3 stood back up. He rolled lots of 5s and 6s. When the intercessors finally waded in turn 3 they decimated the lychguard and a block of immortals. (Consolidated 6” and Fight twice strat)The librarian with AOR actually survived until turn 4. That dude is tough with AOR and stormcaller active. 0+ save and 4++ and -1 to hit if needed. I kept forgetting to heal him though with the chaplain. I could have put the Phobos guys in reserves but I didn’t. Next time I may and use them to take objectives later. TheUnlikelyGamer84
That was the problem I didn’t know it changed to after the roll. That was a mistake and Thank you for bringing it to my attention. That’s why I do these practice games so I don’t go in blind. I don’t have the time to compete all the time and friendlies aren’t as intense. In the end I didn’t hurt me terribly on this one however I understand that a good player will capitalize heavily on my mistake. Not saying my buddy is not I’m just saying I expect a different caliber at this GT. Turn three was incredibly ruthless and swung so heavily in my favor. He should have retreated when I made combat with the rest of his units and backed up to shoot me as I approached him. It would have taken him from the objectives on that side of the board but he would have more left alive. My army has a huge problem vs mortal wounds. Between the ctan and Imhotep I ate at least 12 if not more. I should have taken pictures but with my kids running around it’s hard to focus completely. TiguriusX
Ok now it makes sense...I was like...WHY... This is a good moment for practice then. In a GT there will be tons of people unfamiliar with latest FAQ etc...your opponents as well as you Have the print out for rules that you will be needing Fight last and the specific designer commentary will be a big deal Get the change to deploy stage for lord of deceit for this situation as well People are not going to expect redeploy tricks from a space wolf...and with assault doctrine available for 2 incursors on turn 1 you can do some serious melee damage to someone (stratagem + spell from support rune priest) I would also double check the latest rules on where you can redeploy. I never do it so am not sure if you are ok placing them outside your DZ using lord of deceit or if you need to do that first Konnavaer 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370699-playing-in-my-first-gt/#findComment-5712729 Share on other sites

TheUnlikelyGamer84
So the mission pack for this GT states that my army must make sense color wise so I can’t use my Deathwatch redemptors with my successor wolves. So since Deathwatch are better with the dreads anyway I was thinking of bringing a vanguard with Deathwatch dreads along with a Space wolves Patrol. Spacewolves will be running up to assault and do what they do best. The Deathwatch will aggressively move forward and blast pesky things off the table like. Drukari raiders and admech fliers. The big thing I’ve noticed is my wolves don’t have the greatest shooting where the deathwatch excel. I wanted to test out the hybrid list before I fully commit to either just the wolves or just deathwatch. Not trying to win the event but I’d like to win at least half my games. Seeing as how I have both armies mostly painted I could go either way with this. Thoughts? Plan is to apply pressure early with the wolves and blast away with the Deathwatch. Deathwatch will be +1 to hit vs units with fly keyword, rerolling 1s to hit and wound, and ignore light cover. The hellblasters have malleus specialism. I get rerolls to wound against Dedicated transports, heavy support and LOW.
