ThePenitentOne
Sorry to revive the post, but I finally downloaded Azardi; it is the best reader I've used so far- I can see the whole page and everything looks good. However, the interface still insists that the entire page must fit on the screen, which means I need a magnifying glass to read it. Does anyone out there know how I can just zoom? I don't need to see the whole page- I know how scrolling works. I just want the text to be big enough to read. I'm so close to being able to enjoy the stuff I paid for- I just need one more feature. The text size options in the drop down menu in the top left corner are greyed out- none of them change the book at all. Thanks in advance! D3L
Okay, does anyone read 40k epubs on computers? If so, what reader do you use? I think I tried three of the top five recommended readers, and none of them allowed me to actually read the full page. I've seen lots of people lament the loss of 40k E-pubs; personally, I feel like every penny I ever spent on them was wasted, humble bundle or not. Calibre, for reading I'm not even sure why others are still in business tbf it does everything and has automatic and user editable library arranging Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370726-epub-reader-recommendations/#findComment-5711873 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
I've not used Azardi - my experience is with Calibre, so what follows is based upon that. However, the interface still insists that the entire page must fit on the screen, which means I need a magnifying glass to read it. Does anyone out there know how I can just zoom? Dumb question: which format are you trying to read? Humble Bundle gives you MOBI (for Kindles), PDF (for computers), and EPUB (for standards-compliant e-readers & computers). The PDF files have a fixed layout so they display the same on every device, and are really designed for print, so I'd avoid them if you're reading them on screen. The EPUB & MOBI files should re-flow the layout to occupy the space they're given (e.g. using Calibre full-screen on my 25" 2560x1440 monitor, Double Eagle comes up as 4 columns of text, but if I make it snap to the right-hand side, it goes down to 1 wide column). From your description of what you're experiencing, it sounds like you're trying to view a PDF file, due to the fixed layout. No resizing or reflow. If your app doesn’t let you zoom the entire page, they’re completely illegible on some devices. ThePenitentOne
Rulebooks from Warhammer Digital are in fixed layout EPUB3. No resizing or reflow. If your app doesn’t let you zoom the entire page, they’re completely illegible on some devices. This is what I was afraid of- that's my format, and that's been my experience. I read a few rules from the screen with my magnifying glass (not even kidding- the same one I use to paint). Then I figured out I could use the snip tool to cut away important pieces and just blow up the JPEGs; the resolution isn't fabulous, but I can read it. Later on I'm going to go hunting for downloads; I'll only take stuff I've paid for and can't use- same way I downloaded copies of all my LPs, cassettes, CDs and DVDs. And yes, I'm old enough that I had a few 8 Tracks as well. Thanks to those who offered advice, and thanks to the mods who fixed and moved this post. Sorry for the necro. EPUB3 is indeed awful and something I wouldn't recommend. :( But I thought we were talking about the novels from Humble Bundle, which are EPUB2 (thankfully) ... Most devices and operating systems have a builtin solution for magnifying the screen. Still far from ideal, but more convenient than those workarounds. AbilityNet have a selection of guides for activating screen magnifiers on different devices.
