Spartans and laser destroyers

So looking at Spartan options you can replace the quad lascannons with Laser destroyers. I was thinking about doing just that, but it seems a bit naff swapping 4 str9 shots for a twin linked str9 shot. Am I missing something or is it just a bad Idea?

The biggest reason I take a spartan isn’t the guns. It’s the flare shield. It asks a lot of questions out of your opponent on how they’ll deal with it in order to slow down the inevitable killer unit/s you’ve stuffed inside. Do they bring dedicated spartan killers in their list or do they just ignore it and focus on weathering whatever you deploy out of it? On its own it’s also a decent threat to enemy armour with its basic loadout, but that’s strictly a secondary use for it, you should be focusing on tooling it up to deploy a hard to ignore threat.

It’s a bad idea.

 

You’re trading 4 shots for 2, with shorter range and AP1. But you’re also trading Heavy for Ordnance. For vehicles, firing an Ordnance weapon makes every other weapon snap shot. A Spartan would have two of them…

 

There’s maybe a conversation to be had on super-heavies, which ignore the above restriction, and it’s okay on Rapier carriers, which aren’t vehicles, only have one weapon anyway, and don’t want to move. But they don’t make any sense on Spartans.

You take the Spartan because its a tough-to-kill (for those not prepared to nuke 1 spartan a turn) brick that can deliver 25 slots worth of models somewhere in relative safety.

 

That it can also shoot out 4 twin-linked lascannon shots is just an added side benefit.

 

In either case, the Las Destroyers are not worth it.

And to be honest, I think the quad las look more appropriate on the huge hull than the destroyers.

 

The latter just look "dinky"/"piddly" on it.

Either way, it’s a quad-barrelled lascannon. Not sure you’d need to model it differently. The fluff is really just that, in a laser destroyer, the barrels are aimed to converge at a single point.

 

And it’s a free updowngrade that has no effect at all on its ability to function as a transport.

 

Literally the only consideration is which gun performs better and sadly, on a Spartan, that’s the quad lascannons, 100% of the time.

What do the laser destroyers look like? I thought it was the same weapon? You definitely don't get two different types of weapon in the kit (or in any kit that can be equipped with either the quad or destroyer).

Look up the rapier laser destroyer.  The folks I know have modified the existing quad-las to not be the tiered style like spartan default, but shaved down so as to be all stuck together close-in like on the rapier.

 

Just looks smaller and piddly compared with the tiered, spaced out quad-las mounts.

Like I said, the link works. But if you search for them they don't show up, only the bolters, gravcannon and the quad mortar.

Weird, I searched using Rapier and got the laser rapier to show up.

Because for some weird reason they have it listed as "space marine rapier laser destroyer" so in theory it wouldn't be picked up. Why the quad mortar is, I have no idea. Edited July 30, 2021 by SkimaskMohawk

Yeah, do not trust that kits will be always correctly classified in FW/GW webshops. Always try to search by words.
