Warhead01
I was wondering if I needed the DA codex to play a DA army that had no special characters, no Ravenwing and no Deathwing.I realize this is a bit of a storage question. I have a 30K First Legion army that I was hoping to bring to the table as a Space Marine army for 40K 9th. Not sure if I need the DA codex to play it that way. I'm partly thinking about turning it all into Black Templars and abandoning 30K all together. Although I do with there was a way to have my cake and eat it too so I could keep it and not repaint it, not that it needs much repainting but once a thing is done it's difficult to want to redo it. Any thoughts on this? nusphigor 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371215-da-codex-necessary-for-dark-angels-legion-army/ Share on other sites
ChargingSoll
No you just need the codex space marines and just play like a normal chapter, you just won't get all the special rules. But it includes the chapter tactic in the codex any way. If you have the army in the heresy era black then you could even do it as a dark angel successor chapter. Brother Tyler
The counter to this is that there are some concepts that are unique to the Dark Angels codex supplement and which derive from the Dark Angels Legion. The trick is figuring out if you think that any of those are essential to your army (and can't be represented by similar rules in Codex: Space Marines). If you haven't already done so, I recommend taking a look at the Warhammer Community articles about Codex Supplement: Dark Angels to see if anything described in those articles appeals to you. If none stand out as things you want to include in your army, Codex: Space Marines should be fine for you. Noserenda
Yeah i guess due to their weird obsessions about not crossing over you wouldnt even have any of the modern DA special units. Should work fine as a more Codex successor, i think there is even one that uses the pre heresy scheme dead on, the Guardians of the Covenant i think? ValourousHeart
I never quite understood why someone would spend so much money on this hobby but decide that the rules to actually play the game are a bridge to far. It isn't like our models have an expiration date. They don't go bad. Ultimately our only cost to continue playing is the rules. Boo-hoo... $65 for the BRB, $50 for codex space marines, and $30 for the DA Supplement codex, and then I have no other 40k expenses for 3-4 years, unless they release a kit I'm interested in. #cheapest-hobby-I-have. But for some reason most players come at this from the other direction. After buying 4 copies of every release for all 35 different 40k armies not to mention any of the AOS armies I have plus all of the specialist games, there is no possible way I can afford the rules for those armies. And yeah yeah I hear you say why do you have 4 copies of Kragnos. Duh, were you not listening, I don't have the rules, how was I suppose to know you can't field more than 1 of him. This is all GW's fault, they let me add 4 to my shopping cart. davextreme
If you want to use the “Grim Resolve” chapter tactic, you get a bunch of other bonuses with it even if you’re not using units from Codex: Dark Angels. Terminators and Librarians automatically get “Deathwing,” which means they get permanent Transhuman and Implacable in Assault Doctrine, they auto-pass morale checks, and can’t fall back unless they pass a leadership test. Bikes and Land Speeders automatically get “Ravenwing,” giving them a 5+ invulnerable save if they don’t Remain Stationary, 4+ if they advance, and Speed of the Raven in Devastator Doctrine. Other infantry get Fire Discipline in Tactical Doctrine. You also have access to all the relics and stratagems. All of which to say, you’re giving up a fair bit if you want Grim Resolve but don’t want to use the supplement’s rule. My recommendation would be to pick custom chapter tactics instead. Warhead01
Thank you for those of you who gave helpful replies. I think I just need to sit through a supplement review before I decide if I will bring my 30K DA's over to 40K or just let them be. I have to apologize a bit though I didn't realize my thread would be moved here in my head I'd thought that I had been more clear about repainting my collection to a different chapter than I was when I posted. Thank you for the help. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371215-da-codex-necessary-for-dark-angels-legion-army/#findComment-5729128 Share on other sites
