Captain on Bike

Primaris Chaplain on Bike

Chief Apothecary on Bike

Company Champion on Bike

Ancient on Bike

9x Black Knights (using FW Outriders)

9x Invader ATVs

9x Primaris Outrider Bikes

I play Star Phantoms as well. Are we allowed to do custom traits? I thought only regular marines could do custom chapter traits. Dark Angels had to use their basic codex plus units from C:SM.

I went the other way with mine. I was sold a pile of early primaris on the cheap just before I deployed overseas for 6 months and decided to do an all primaris chapter of Dark Angels. I have since added all my spare terminators into a detachment of Deathwing. Never liked marine bikers enough to do them in any army in the last 20+ years lol

You can do custom traits, and can still use the dark angels units, but you lose the chapter traits as a trade off. That means losing the “inner circle” and “ravenwing” abilities for always on transhuman and jink bonuses respectively. It’s a big loss of power, in exchange for being able to customise Your Dudes for a playstyle you prefer

Any chapter can have custom successors now. As noted above, you'll lose Inner Circle and Jink on your Deathwing and Ravenwing, respectively, along with the Dark Angels chapter tactic and Dark Angels chapter relics (unless you spend a CP to get one). If that's a tradeoff you want to make then go for it!

Personally, Inner Circle and Jink are just too strong for me to give up when playing Dark Angels. Dark Angels characters are great too.

Custom successor chapter traits work much better with chapters other than Dark Angels.

I plan on using inheritors chapter tactic so I dont loose the dark angels bonus' I looked over custom traits and Im like meh, I'll stick to inheritors.

Just use the straight up Dark Angels rules if you're going for Inheritors. With Inheritors you lose access to Dark Angels characters and relics.

Unless you're playing in a tournament nobody is going to care.

respect that, but not interested in running Dark Angels Characters  since theyre not star phantoms and as for the relics... might really just use one if anything. That can be accessed through a strat.

In the end, I find that Dark Angels are one of those chapters that, by taking any form of successor trait (including inheritors of the Primarch), one hinders one's self heavily in terms of mechanics.

It does fit the lore, though.

Mainly it's just about using the characters' rules and not paying a CP for the relic. For example, one of GW's 'Eavy Metal guys plays his Silver Skulls with Ultramarines rules and even has a Roboute Skulliman for his army! You can actually see them (minus the Skulliman) in the Space Marines codex.

But at the end of the day it's definitely whatever feels best for you. All about having fun after all, and cool lore is part of the fun.
