So when I last left the hobby I was in the process of converting my wolves into a 13th company detachment from the black crusade at the time. Coming back I started with my guard as a smaller project, as some new primaris thing was out and I needed to learn what in the name of russ that was. Now I've gotten the guard to a point I'm just painting guardsmen til the sun explodes, its time to give the army that got me into the game the respect and love it deserves.

This is going to be a big project, as with the guard it was just repainting and a small reorganization, this will require rebasing(still on 25's), stripping(so many layers of paint),and reconverting. When last I left the wolves could bring 2 power weapons a special weapon and 2 plasma pistols in each grey hunter squad, so I need to bring that into line with whats now allowed.

So tomorrow I have a game at my local against my buddies deathguard to send them off in their current glory, before the clippers and alcohol come. We decided on 3000 points total, which I'm taking most of the force. 3 10 man grey hunters(plasmagun, PL w/ PF), 3 10 man blood claws(PL w/ PF) form the bulk. Bjorn, Logan, and the new Ragnar (my friend bought it for me. No lie that guilt that hes unpainted is a lot of what prompted this project), Company ancient, 10 man scout squad, 1 5 man termie squad 1 5 man wolf guard, 2 long fang packs and a vindicator. Plan is to have the grey hunters and long fangs give support to the mass of blood claws and dreadnoughts to smash the center. Simple and adaptable if needed since the grey hunters can still go toe to toe with whatever he can bring.

So after tomorrow its time to start painting. The only thing done is the predator, which will just need highlights or to be left alone as an old paint job. The old metal bjorn model is stripped and ready to prime and get started, and the ragnar is bare. I'm probably going to wait to do these til I've got my scheme down well. I have Wolf grey and ice storm from army painter. Ive been trying to get SW grey from my local but they've been out of that and the codex twice now, so here hoping for tomorrow. The plan is to prime white, SW grey contrast, highlight with ice storm, then accent with the darker wolf grey, or maybe a neutral dark grey. Im getting Moon yellow for one pad and then I'm going to blood angel red for the other. Going to use a lot of brass and copper to accent the metals to stand out, and keep all the wolf pelts dark. Like greys and blacks to stand out against the bright blues of the marines. I'm thinking something similar for the bases. My guard are going to be on dirt and grass, so I want something different so I'm thinking rubble. I also saw a great tutorial on how to do cobblestone or tile so I may try a couple and see what I like while I wait for the iso to do its work.

Any good recommendations there? Iso alcohol seems to be the best for plastic, but Ive heard of green cleaner. I'm worried that would eat the plastic though if I let it set. I have the 91% for the 3d printer so going to give it a shot and then well see.

I'm looking forward to it. Ive read a lot on them and they look awesome. Once I get my current packs in order I'm going to start integrating the primaris stuff. I'm going to change one of the blood claw packs over to a jump pack one. They used to be so expensive I'm looking forward to the variety. The centurions look as beefy as the terminators so cant go wrong there too. And guys riding giant wolves? wish I had those when I started. I'm sad to see all the priests go, but they've got some cool stuff to replace them. Time to get back to it.

Equipment rules are always changing.

is magnetizing an option?

that way the paint scheme for an entire pack will hold true and just a few arms need changing around

just need a few guys to have magnets...not entire pack

Edited by TiguriusX

Magnetizing isn't too big of an option right now, but maybe soon. Ive done it with tanks but never minis. I have to get shoulder pads, backpacks, and even arms for some people so I may give it a shot on the SW guys. This was also from before every weapon had a profile too, so there's all kinds of melee weapons in the packs like spears, two handed axes, and the like, so have to kinda have to roll with those guys as having chainsword's a lot of times. Doing some yardwork now, so ill prime Bjorn and Ragnar here and talk to you all tomorrow.

What I'd say is that seeing as the codex is now done and dusted for 9th edition and with the equipment options moved to closer resemble the kits, you're in a better place than ever to choose a loadout and stick to it, especially for first-born (non-Primaris) models as given current trends they aren't likely to get much in the way of big changes!

As for specific weapon profiles on melee weapons, it's not a huge difference across the board in performance and only spears have been "lost" as an option. Axe, maul and sword are still mostly used anywhere as are thunder hammers.

Note on rebasing, there are 3d printed rings (and half rings) available tgat expand your base size to 32 mm. EBay and elsewhere on the interwebs can provide.

In addition to these, which are great options if you want to keep your models at the same height, if you also want to raise older Wolves up to more approximate height next to the Primaris Great Company members (if the height disparity really bothers you, etc.), you can also put the old bases onto 32 mm ones and go nuts adding new basing material to in-fill the gap.  You can adjust how high they sit by trimming down the bottom rim of the old bases.

Increasing the base size is not mandatory IIRC. If your models are on 25mm bases because that is how they were supplied, that is still legal. Smaller bases make life slightly easier in keeping units out of LOS.

Most tournaments (including GWs) require the langer base but for fun games you should be fine. If you want to strip them anyway, new bases are no big effort. If you have metal minis you should get extender rings as there are no 32mm slotta bases and without slots they don't really hold well to a base.

Thanks for the responses all!

Happy I checked this as I loaded everything up to start playing a big 5k soup game now against my 2 buddies orks, so a proper big sendoff for the wolves for now. Ill probably glue them. Im thinking I'm going to make a 2 or 3k force of firstborn and sell off any extras I dont like to keep space down. If I go for more wolves they'll be primaris and probably a separate company so an end is in sight for this unlike guard. I had already taken the snow off of the old ones in the process of redoing em for 13th company, so they'll just need to get popped off the 25's and stuck onto finished 32's. Good warning on the slotted bases too, didn't even think of that. Those guys will probably be an issue, well see. I'm definitionally going to re-base them as it is a constant fight that one of our guys runs his orks on smaller bases still and tries to cram as many as he can in melee. It just seems poor sports to take advantage like that, and we've even showed him the rings he just needs to slip on. On the height difference too, I dont like the whole primaris switch much at all, so they'll be segregated into their own army eventually.

On the weapons thing too, they weren't power weapons or anything, just CCW they needed at the time. I thought it was boring to see 45 guys rushing with swords for started adding in any melee weapon so I could to mix it up. Some I like and ill keep, some... are the best teenage me could do and will probably get redone. I'm also thinking of pulling out all the plasma pistols out of the packs too. In 3rd having a s7 weapon was great for popping dreads, but now just seems to be a buff, but not a great one. Grey hunters seem to be much more line infantry to hold objectives than assault guys now that they dont have true grit so another pistol just seems extra. Should they go to blood claws? the BS bump they got and shooting in melee sees like a better option.

Well time to finish loading the truck and get the dice rolling. GLHF everyone!

Just getting home from the game. The wolves were the only ones to acquit themselves honorably, except for a dread that failed in shooting and melee to do a single wound to thraka and thus let him into t he center to start crumping things. The grey hunters stood the line and the claws earned their name. Ragnar got a single round of combat before getting clipped by a claw, but he did at least get his first blood. What are people experience with the ancient? I dont think a single wound came about from his aura, and that +1 didn't seem to do much at all either. Kinda confirmed that the core of my army will be a big wall of advancing marines with boulders of dreads to give the power. Captains and lieutenants to give some more re-rolls and then a librarian for spells, but no termies or transports. Perhaps it was the size of the game, but I couldn't find any crack to deep strike my termies or outflank the scouts and they kinda just showed up, took potshots, but never got close to the real action. Was also a first experience with the new ork codex, and they for some reason got more powerful it seems. Turn one he had nearly 3/4 of his army in melee with something with just his trukks and gretchin hanging back. I had barely moved out of my deployment zone and his stormboys and scrappjets were charging my line. The wolves were handling, but the knights and tanks went down like paper tigers. The relic shokk attack gun did stupid damage to anything it shot at, but at least it was only once per turn now. Still a chore to play ork, waiting 30 mins of moving models, long time as buckets of shooting come, then another half hour moving charges before getting swarmed. At least running wolves I could hit back before being swamped.

I just started testing a company ancient in my list.  I actually like it.  I think you need to use him with shooting and not melee though.

Mine rides in a drop pod with my multi melta LFs.  The LFs are my super combo shooting unit and usually get recitation of focus + captain reroll aura when they land.  That means any 4+ I roll gives me 2 free shots with a BS2 MM.  This happens during my opponents turn which means I can cause all kinds of chaos.  I have had plenty of games where I shoot something that hasn't activated yet (shooting or a charge unit he moved into place).  My funniest game is where an opponent evaluated the risk of firing and just refused to fire at me.  He moved his stuff out of LOS instead.  The best option is for my opponents to kill the LF in melee

But because I am crazy I give my ancient the teeth of terra relic so he welcome anyone who charges in (gives him 7 S5 AP2 D2 attacks)

As for orks...I advise anyone playing orks or what appears to be a large horde army to play with a clock.  It is the only fair way to do a game.  You each get X amount of time.  If you burn it all moving models that is your own fault.  I still get to do my turns and I want to play all 5.

My go to star unit has been Wulfen with Claws. When you get charged, you'll have 26 attacks at S6 rerolling to wound. Hitting on 2s and/or getting 3 hits on a 6, depending on chapter traits, often means I can bank on 25 to 28 hits. Rerolling to wound on 3s often also means about 20 to 24 wounds.

Fighting on death basically dooms an ork squad without a melee inv save to mutual destruction.

Orks can shoot them, but then you get to dictate how your opponent aims his guns.

OK, so the stripping has started. I hate past me for whatever black primer I used after the first paint job. Theres a white on a few as well. It just wont come off all the way. So we adapt and move on. Got 2 BC squads and a grey hunter squad as well as 2 HQ choices all stripped and ready to reprime. I may go with a Pre-heresy flat grey, but I dunno. My local is still out of SW grey, and ill order it if theyre out still tuesday. Its all im waiting for since I got the red and yellow I ordered. Got some termies and more HQ going in now, and well see how it goes. How often should you change the alcohol out, cause the one bottle still seems to be working pretty well for everything but that black.

This is going to be the 2k army I'm aiming for right now. I just got an ebay thing for the shoulder pads ill need and I'm going to buy some jump packs to make some skyclaws. Basic plan is grey hunters and long fangs hold back objectives, dreads and BC go for a side. Skyclaws and termies DS or lead charge depending on mission. Just keep alot of power armored bodies to overwhelm people.

In every case there's a lot of power armored painting in my future as my buddy is going to commission me to paint his thousand sons. The good thing about that is they'll be the first ones the wolves get to kick around once thye're painted!

  • 2 weeks later...

In waiting mode still. Ordered SW contrast, should be here next week. The shoulder pads seem to have been lost in The Amazon so I may need to reorder from someone else. Everyone is all stripped down now. Word of warning for anyone stripping large amounts of models is to change your gloves often when they get punctures. My hands have been peeling from the highly concentrated iso alcohol so be careful. I learned what caused the inability to get some of the black out too, the old chaos black primer can seep into the plastic so that stuff is never coming off all the way. Im pretty decided on my bases too. I've got some fish tank gravel and slate I'm going to make up a rocky tundra for them to walk on. Keep it super basic with a flat grey rocks with some jagged ones sticking out and slate to elevate where its needed. Ill get some of the tundra tufts, but any advice for the snow drifts ill want on there is appreciated. I may start knocking out bases while I wait for the delivery stuff to get sorted.

And a couple small victories into progress! Then setback! Got the shoulder pads and SW grey delivered, so I spent yesterday assembling a 2k force to get into the fight. My local, GMI games in riverside, is having a tournament in orktober and I think that should give me enough time to paint the 2k of wolves to a decent standard and give them a good introduction. Downside here is that I wont have the skyclaws or anything yet for that, itll just be the old models I have right now. So my options are pretty much anything that was in third edition(I miss my leman russ tank) I settled on Ragnar, Chaplain, 4 six-man grey hunter squads, 2 10-man blood claw packs, 3 venerable dreadnoughts, wolf guard termies, long fang pack with 4 missile launchers. I understand there will be a lot of psykers so this will let me purge the witch and hopefully stop TS secondary BS since I know at least 3 will be there. All the ObSec and with core stuff will let me dominate objectives, hopefully. I'm debating taking a techpriest instead of the chaplain, and really debating about breaking my no new models til everything is painted rule to get some cyber wolves for cheap actions. Hopefully ill get some test games done.

Sadly the spray paint i bought broke immediately. The damn tip broke off as soon as i pushed it down, so I'm waiting til I can run to home depot to grab another can of something. I got all the fish gravel soaked in bleach and going to let it sit in the sun to dry off before I start to build bases and got the metal models stripped and ready to go as well. Ill get some pictures up of the guy's that are stripped and assembled, but they are still without bases and primer, so long journey ahead!

  • 7 months later...

Ok so long time no update. I've been distracted by guard and MTG so havent spent much time at all on my wolves until recently. Got about a 1k force primed and bases all but finishes, so going to match them up here today. Right now its 3 dreadnoughts, a land speeder, 6 grey hunters, and a techmarine on the bench behind my guard and a Thousand Sons commission. I am very ready to get my first army back on the tabletop and am a couple hours solid work away. Those hours are sadly at the back of the line behind guard and life but hey, they wont mind getting a little longer in the tooth. Happy hunting battle brothers!
